Zeppelin-Staakens!?!? Scramble those interceptors!

The kids had so much fun trying to bust the balloon, we went for a second game of Wings of War yesterday after lunch.

It went something like this.

So we decided we'd play the bomber solo scenario from Flight of the Giants, only tweaked to give us an advantage. The tweak was our fighters were pretty powerful - a Snipe, the AB/A Bristol Fighter, and an AB Sopwith Dolphin. Plenty of firepower to deal with the giants, right?

We moved to attack. My first shot dealt bomber 1 some damage, and jammed my guns. He returned fire at me, and my Dolphin started smoking.

A bit of maneuvering, and now not only am I smoking, with jammed guns, but I'm on fire too! Son#2 took his first shot on the previous turn, and jammed his guns as well. Son#1 took a shot, then got out in front of the bomber, thinking he could Immelmann on his next turn and get a shot from the front.

It didn't quite work, so he had to come back around. My Dolphin, no longer with jammed guns, put a lot of lead into the first bomber. Son#2, still undamaged, is declaring the mission a lost cause, saying we should just give up and turn for home. I gave him a lecture on the importance of saving London from German bombers.

But not in vain, the first bomber went crashing down in flames on the same turn. That left the two of them to catch and destroy the remaining bomber.

#1 chases the bomber along the edge of the table, doing a small amount of damage.

#2 is gaining ground, but the bomber has now reached table's end. #1 has done about 14 points of damage, taking 11 in return.

The scenario ended, and we counted victory points per the rules. The score - Bombers 31, Interceptors 30. That was close. Had they been able to do a few more points to the second bomber (I think they needed to do 17 points), we would have scored enough points to call it a win.

Great AAR!! Nice pics! I know, personally, how devestating bomber defensive fire can be. Am impressed with your scouts infliction on the bombers. Also, I'm impressed with the paint jobs on your Dolphin and F2B.

Prior to take-off I told the kids, "whatever you do, don't get between the bombers. That's certain death." They did a good job of heeding my advice, better than I did, in fact.
