During the holiday lull between Christmas and New Years, ten intrepid pilots including our Ohio Squadron Commander CappyTom, took to the air on Dec 28, 2011 at the Soldiery in Columbus, Ohio. This was our second attempt at the Aerodrome Assault scenario. The full rules are in the Files Section (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=917) of the Aerodrome. Each side’s mission was to destroy the enemy aerodrome while heavily defended by flak and AA guns. We had such a good time with this scenario last month, we decided to give it another go. Thanks again, Don (“LGKR”), for your fine scenario! Here is the initial setup, using CappyTom’s awesome aerial photo map as our field of battle (note the acrylic sheets holding down the two ends of the map which often reflected the fluorescent light tubes above them in subsequent pictures):

Each pilot selected two planes: a scout and a 2-seater. They would take off in one of the two, and if shot down would re-enter the fray (after the scenario’s prescribed wait period) in the other, alternating between them if they were so unlucky as to go through multiple planes over the course of the evening. To begin, two planes were flying patrol over friendly territory: Ken The Cowman’s Holstein Snipe and Phil’s Albatros. Two turns later, four more planes took off from their respective aerodromes: Misdomingo’s DeHavilland DH4 and Tommy Z’s Airco DH4 rumbled down the Entente airstrip. Mike’s Roland and Carlos’ white Fokker D.VII. left the Central Power’s airbase. Tony was expertly manning the antiaircraft flak artillery, and hit Misdomingo’s DH4 squarely under the fuselage.

Luckily, Misdomingo drew a “0” from the flak gun’s “C” damage deck, and the two DH4s continued to lumber on toward the enemy aerodrome, both fully laden with nine bombs apeice. Tony’s red-and-white striped D.VII. flew over his home hangar to challenge the oncoming bombers while Phil’s Albatros doubled back to help. The Albatros and Airco DH4 exchanged deadly fire, sending both planes plummeting out of the sky in flames.
30132
One more sideslip to the left, and Misdomingo’s DeHavilland released her full load of bombs on the C.P. aerodrome causing massive damage to the structure and leaving it on fire that continued to burn, causing more damage as the ground crew struggled to douse the flames.
30133
Ground-based machine gun emplacements peppered the DeHavilland as she flew away from the burning hangar. Carlos’ D.VII. and Mark’s remarkable hand-built Fokker E.IV. monoplane converged on Misdomingo’s now-unladen bomber, sending her crashing down, deep in enemy territory, and earning Mark his first kill of the evening.
