Two weeks ago, I hosted a game which introduced the Zeppelin to our Group.
The scenario: August, 1917. On the return trip from a raid over London, the Leviathan of the Air, L-11 experienced engine trouble, and bad weather which delayed it's return over the coast of Belgium until just after daylight.
Four Camels from RNAS Sqdn. 9 with support from one ready aircraft form another Sqdn (also a Camel) rose to challenge the Zeppelin before it reached the German lines. Racing to escort the Zeppelin where three DR-1's.
The Camels reached the Zeppelin first, and flew like an angry swarm around the L-11. Three turns later, the DR-1's arrived to try and protect the lumbering beast. One turn after the first Camel was shot down, a SPAD XIII reached the fight.
It took two hours (30 full turns) for the Zeppelin to traverse the length of the table. It wasn't until the firing from the Camels started a fire, that the Zeppelin appeared to be in real trouble. Once the fires where started, the airship was doomed. As it reached safety (the end of the table) it was within three turns of full immolation and destruction due to the flames.
The firing from the Camels did significant structural damage, killed or wounded five of the crew, and damaged one engine.
Two of the DR-1's were destroyed. Two camels where shot down, with a third Camel returning to base with a wounded pilot, and the plane shot to hell.
