Hi Zoe

The first one in the top is to my knowledge not in 1/350.. I will contact the designer and ask him if he is interested in scaling them to that scale. The ones in the bottom is in 1/350 and suitable for "In Clouds of Glory". The idea of using them for WoG is discussed briefly here: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?6988-Albatross-DV-DVa-Shapeways

The detail on those tiny things is amazing! I hope they aren't too sandpapery in texture?

The game is a homegrown project we (2 friends - 1 Learning game designer, 1 Movie prop maker/civil pilot) have worked on since 1996. Rules and materials are being translated to English now - Due January 2012. With the emergence of Shapeways others can get planes and play the game when the rules are translated.

We are currently playing a long running campaign spanning start 1917- end of 1918, with one mission per month and continous bookkeeping for each players squadron: Pilots experience, planes on the roster, wounded pilots, damaged planes out of service. Planes get phased out and new ones are introduced in the correct months.

Here is an After action report describing the rules:

And here is an after action report describing the feel of the campaign.

As far as a wargamer goes that looks fantastic!
The terrain is awesome! I do wonder how you keep the flying stands upright?
Are there holes in the entire gaming board or something? It makes methink of "Canvas Eagles" but with tiny aircraft instead of the "1/72- kits- on -a -car-radio-antenna":p

I'm sure it has potential but I cant see myself painting up such small aircraft in a decent way...but than again that's more my problem and has nothing to do with this game ...:clap:

Hi Bluedevil

No holes, but the terrain boards are made from styrofoam. The flight stands are made from carbon fibre (R/C plane control rods) sharpened in one end and stuck directly into the foam boards. The boards are from the mid nineties and are still holding together after over 100 games. The planes can rotate freely 360 degrees on the pivoting nose mount (made with a hole in the nose of the plane, a bent piece of piano wire and a bit of heat crimp tube) and the planes can be slid freely to any altitude on the pole. The system can be seen more clearly on the pics in this combat report: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/581647/zeppelin-bitter-combat-over-the-north-sea-januar

If they could come painted I would be in heaven. I have trouble with the large scale 1/26, I know it flies, but I still have troubel with this scale.

I am sure you can get a company like these to paint them (for a cost): http://theminiaturespage.com/paintserv/Historical/

Some of you have asked for sources for decals for 1/350 scale.

Here is some links:

Doms decals 1/300-1/600 scale https://sslrelay.com/www.domsdecals.com/sess/utn154ed770019ce46/shopdata/index.shopscript

http://www.i-94enterprises.com/decal_selection.htm They insignia in other sizes suitable for example bombers and two seaters they also has some very neat letters, symbols and checkers usable for a lot of neat detaiing.

Doug Baumann has custom made his very neat lozenge patterns for 1/350: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/db-decals/52802-lozenge-more.html

We will design a sheet with numbers and squadron insignia (for example french Storks and Cockerels and German personal pilot insignia) with Doug when we get to it.

Some pics of the recent shipment of 1/350 planes.. I have given them a light coat of grey sprat primer in order to get the paint to stick and to expose and uneven surfaces that would need a fine sanding.

1/144 - 1/350 size comparison..

A quick calculation would show that a 144th scale model is 2,43 times bigger than its 1/350 counterpart. In reality the difference is this:

No, it 2.43 cubed - the volume (and hence apparent size) is 14.35 times bigger. A factor of 2.43 in each dimension, length, width, and height.

Oh.. You are off course right.. The dimensions is smaller by a factor of 2,43 but the size is the squared value. In other words: They are small when compared to the 1/144..

Interesting... not sure I'd be game for that small--I'd feel like I was gonna break something given the delicateness of biplane struts--but this gives me reason to hope that 1/700 WWII might take off someday. (Most of the major fighters and bombers for the US, Germany and Japan have already been made at one time or another by Pit-Road/SkyWave and Trumpeter, and most of the major flattops are available too.)

Using 1/700 with 1/700 waterline ships for 1942 Carrier war scenarios could be interesting but daunting. Perhaps some special rules for handling large plane formations as one plane would be needed - Say a formation of 10 Vals and and one of 8 Kates plus escorts and attacing interceptors in the same scenario, but with rules restricting the to keep formation together until the attack run (or damaged) and rules like that to speed up play.

Perhaps making a combination of rules from WOG-DOW (the full movement system with cards and so on) and and the shooting, damage, formation, tactical doctrine (Japanese Shotai versus USN pair for example), ship attack and flak rules from the excellent "Bag The hun II" ruleset. http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=7&zenid=5cdbafb1207fb4d38c466b9ef3858e78

Another thought I have been toying with is to use Flat Top - which is the most nail-bitingly tense board game I have ever played as a campaign meta-game, representing the operational setting and the play out the individual engagements between aircraft with minis.

A team based, umpired - with written orders, game playing for example "Battle of the Coral Sea" is unprecedented.. But playing it over a long time taking the individual combats with minis could be a lot of fun. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2529/flat-top

That said: 1/700 planes are small: http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1233358_lg.jpg

I guess pilot and crewman figures are relatively easy to source using 1/300 wargaming infantry figures. I can see some chappies from Heroics and Ros infantry support and command teams being rather handy!
