View Full Version : Future Finish on Shapeways Aircraft

As discussed and recommended elsewhere on the forum, I've been "painting" light coats of Future (actually Pledge with Future Shine) with a brush on the Shapeway WSF models in order to smooth the finish before painting. It seems like the number of coats needed ranged between 6 and 8 depending upon the model's uncoated finish.

I'm wondering if this is everybody else's experience? If not, how many coats are they using?

If this is correct http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

your Pledge with Future Shine should be the real deal.

But 6 to 8 coats? Nope, I'll never go the shapeways way!

:salute:

Why print in WSF and the add a lots of coats. Why not print in in a better quality material ? (the price perhaps, but...).. You get to have a nice smooth finish and the details will stand out.

The detail is not really lost with properly applied thin coats, which is why I was wondering how many coats others apply. Moreover, these are for gaming. So, "strong" and "flexible" was my choice - I dropped a couple on a hard floor from 5 feed and no breakage. WSF also seemed to be the shapeway material that I saw most folks discussing on the forum as least liable to be warped. Other recommendation?

I find double-dipping in wooden floor sealant to be adequate. You brush with turps to remove excess between dips, so the coarse detail - MG barrel tips, ribbing, aileron gaps etc is preserved too. In 1/144 you don't have such fine details as hinges, screw holes on panels, etc.

My latest process is three coats of spray Krylon Gloss Clear. Fills, and keeps most of the details with out excessive build up. I spray a dozen at a time until the lacquer flows smooth. Top coat with the dull version and paint away. My son uses a coat of gray or black primer for his base coat.

Yeah, then there's the un-primed in drawers, and the 48 in the process of being printed and shipped here. I don't know why I can't do just one thing at a time . . .

Hey David
You have shares in Shapeways you're not telling us all about?

That is a lot of planes. 12 DR1's alone in the top picture! Over 60 shown and 48 to come...

Is your plan to do a 1:1 scale campaign of the whole WW1 in the West, maybe over the centenary 2014-2018.

Sigh..I'm just jealous...;)

I have become a fan of white/strong/flexible, that is the default selection and has been "very good to me." I am awaiting an order of Neiuport 17's to convert to Neiuport triplanes this week, eeeeek! Shapeways are super in my book(s)
