March 13th, 1917 a brisk morning for a flight over the german lines to gather some information on some roads suspected of enemy troop movements. So as the morning sun was starting its journey across the the OC mad the call, with minimal cloud cover and mainly clear skies the weather was nearly perfect to get the photos that were needed to find out what was going on over there. Heading out to their aircraft James flying his ever trust worthy Sopwith Triplane Chris flying the RE8 for the first photo run of the morning and Shane flying also flying escort with the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter.

The Plan was for Chris to get the photos of the first road while The 1 1/2 Strutter flew his wing to keep away the nasties... then allowing the Tripe to clean up and keep em running while the photos were being taken. After that Shane would go for a second road while Chris returned the favor.

As the trio of planes started over the trenches over no man's land they were spotted by a set of German scouts lead by none other than the infamous Grumpybear(Darell). Having a bit of a hieght advantage the allied aircraft continued on thier path to get the photos of at least the first road before they where met with the German resistance. As Darell, Robert and Gord continued to climb and rid the skys of the green and tan birds flying around in an area that was not clearly thiers they started to engauge. Bullets flying through the air in all directions as the RE8 moved to Wingman position allowing the Strutter to then start on his photo pass.

Having missed the turn in the road the Strutter was forced to circle back to get shots of the rest of the road. The RE8 in his roll as defender took to many bursts and decided it was better to get the photos back of the first road back to HQ than risk mission failure. So as the RE8 broke off to get the photos safely back to his lines the Sopwith 1 1/2 strutter was destroyed in a hail of lead breaking apart in many peices and taking the few photos to the mud with him..

Doing what damage he could the Tripe then broke off back to his airfield to fight another day...

The German pilots managed to ward off the allies before they could get all the information they were after...

This was a mission we were play testing a different way of doing a photo reccon by trying to better represent how actual photo runs were done to get all the objects or materials that were found when photo graphing larger areas at a higher altitude.

Photos had to be taken from between altitude 5-7 and observer and pilot could not fire only fly over the taget area while being protected by their wingmen...

We thought it went well however we are still in the play testing stages..

Blue skys! keep it fast and fun!

Sounds very cool. Looking forward to reading the completed Scenario, and being able to play it.

Thanks for the post! I like the mission idea of an area or sector/road recon. It looks like my gaming table!

I really like the looks of that green german plane. Got any close ups of your customs?

A lot of interesting possibilities here. The well defined road system for photo recon does add an extra dimension to the whole action. Yes! I would also like to see more of your planes please.:salute:

How well did the pegs hold up, I usually find that if I stack that many on top of each other the whole thing tends to be a bit wobbly.
Particularly when using metal models as I assume that at least the 1 1/2 Strutter is?

Once we play test it a few more times and get most of the bugs out James and I will write up a scenario so that other groups can try out this idea.

No Problem, I like that this Idea that James wanted to play test is well recieved.. The Calgary Group will put this out shortly so others can give it a go and give us some feed back.;)

The Green Alb belongs to our Squadron Comander Grumpybear(Darell), I'll talk to him and see if he has any close ups of that one if not I'll see if he wants to get some done.. keep posted for the close ups.:minis:

The pegs hold up pretty good.. I find that if I place the plane and then gently press towards the base and take up the play in the pegs it is very steady... especially with the metal models.

Thanks for the feed back on this keep it coming...:salute:
