For the "Do-it-your-self" crowd, I would recommend checking out MakerBot. A friend of mine who works as a designer in NYC has one of these. The print resolution isn't nearly as robust as the 3D printers in Gully-Raker's video, however the goal of MakerBot is to make 3D printing available to the home-brew crowd interested in printing at home. Take a look:

I think I would have just as much fun putting it together as I would using it afterwards... now they just need to design a Makerbot that can make Makerbots...

Actually, there is a branch of Makerbot users working to make this a reality. They have almost tackled printing the circuit boards. My friend from NYC is close with some of the people in their NY group; some of the stuff he has told me about is incredible. Did you know people have modified their MakerBots to "print" chocolate and frosting?! You can print an object the size of a whistle (I know from watching it print one in person) in as little as 15 minutes!

My friend recently proposed to his long time girlfriend while vacationing in Portland. I'll let you guess what the ring was made out of and where he got it.
;)

Hey Keegan. Just seen one that can do sugar sculpture. Just imagine. You shoot it down, you get to eat it. Have to do the decals on rice paper though.
Rob.

Replicators!! Did no-one concerned learn anything from Stargate SG1? Build one Replicator and pretty soon millions of the little critters will be trying to destroy the human race!

Of course, edible Replicators will be easy to destroy - but only at the cost of increased obesity.
