I played my first two Dawn of War games yesterday. Both of them were dog fights.

The first one consisted of myself in an Aichi against my friend flying a Dewoitine. I was dominating the vast majority of the flight and even managed to injur his pilot. However, I made one fatal error which allowed him to catch me in my broadside. The game ended with 10 of my hits dealing 12 damage and 4 of his hits doing 18 damage.

This was definitely a great learning game for both of us. This showed us the big difference in the speed and maneuverabilty of the different planes and the value of having a tail gunner.

The second mission started as a 3-way brawl between myself in a Hurricane, another friend in a Hurricane, and the other in the Dewoitine. For the first few turns no one had a definitive lead then we were joined by a Zero and a Messerschmit. I managed to put a few good points of damage on the Zero and the Dewoitine and had just started tailing the Dewoitine when the other Hurricane popped out of a dog fight with the Messer and cut me to ribbons when I drew an Explosion, Wounded Pilot, and a 6dmg token which was enough to take me out, again. The next to go was the Hurricane who was taken out by a long shot from the Zero who was subsequently taken out by the tailing Dewoitine. The Messer had a wounded pilot for most of the game, however, the hour was late so I had to hit the hay before I found out who finished the fight, either the Dewoitine with a mountain of damage tokens on his console or the Messer with an injured pilot.

All in all, I had a blast playing! I can't wait to get more planes and fly more missions.

Awesome, glad you had a blast. Just a tip though, 2 planes bad, 4 planes good, 20 planes better :)

cheers,

Dave.

In our group we normally fly two planes each. We use the excuse the a pilot would have radio communication with his wing=man. So with four players the sky's suddenly become clutterd.

James!

It is a fun game. Once you learn the basic rules, you can play several games quickly!

Sounds like a lot of fun. Hoping to get a big game, of Dawn of War, early on the 7th. We could do a scenario if you want.

Awesome! Maybe we can get together somehow before the 7th, and get in a game or two. I only have the deluxe set and a couple extra minis... and have only played once, so could use some "practice". Am always willing to act as a target drone for local players...

Played my first game using elevation last night in DoW. I'm a little rusty only having played WoW for the past couple of weeks and a little spoiled with the tight turns some of the WoW planes have. Things definitely didn't go my way. There were three collisions, one of which was between my two Zeroes. The game may have ended a lot sooner than it did had I not made a turn to the left when I meant to turn to the right which would have put me right behind a Wildcat in a tailing position.

Some notes and things I learned from the game:

Zeroes can turn tighter than a Wildcat, but not my much.

You cannot turn like a WWI plane.

Playing on the standard battle mat is very restrictive for the fast, slow turning DoW planes.

Elevation can be deadly with practice.

DoW is a more of a game of patience than WoW.

Had another good game last night. I still need to get a camera to document these games. I used Galer's Wildcat and my friend used Alan Blacks Martlet and we were up against a Val and a Zero. This was the first time the Martley pilot had ever played the game so he paired up with me and the Japanese pilots were experienced in WoW so DoW was no too much of a change for them.

We used almost every special rule except for fuel. We used altitude, acceleration, special damage, blind spot for the two seater, collisions, and I'm probably missing a few others. We played on both the east and west game mats. The "story" was that the Zero was escorting the Val to bomb a US airfield on some island in the pacific and the Allied fighters were there to intercept.

Things started a little rough for me as I took a hard shot from the rear gunner of the Val and started smoking. The rear gunner was working overtime again. However, this was the first time I have ever been able to tail a plane. I was able to get right in the blind spot of the Val and shoot it for three turns, two of which were aimed and followed it into an immelmann and shot it down.

The Zero had almost no damage on it but near the end caught fire and was finished off by the Martlet. Overall it was a good game. I was sitting on 12 damage for most of the game. The Marlet took very little damage throughout the entire game.

Overall it was a good time. Can't wait to get more games in.

Great report. Hoping to get a game in Sunday before the tournament. Will be aiming on being there by 11am. IF you get there earlier try to get a table.

James!

Another great report! The damage you collect is pure luck as you have seen! In a game last February one player had 12 damage chips in front of him it added up to only 6 actual points the rest were zeros! Enjoy your games i do mine!

I'm hoping to get a 3v3 game in within the next few days. I now have 4 Zeroes, 3 Vals, 3 Wildcats, a Martlet, a Messerschmitt, a Spitfire, and two Hurricanes, so I'll be able to have some good battles in different theaters. I can't wait till series 3 planes come out.

We're planning on getting one or two more games in using all of the advanced rules then we're going to start playing with objectives. I intend on making a table randomly choosing a mission at the start of the game.
