Hi Chaps. I own two official WWI mats but have an idea of printing and using a mat for Dow with kind of seaside (Battle of Britain and Pacific scenarios). Are there any sources you might know I can download a picture and print it on some large format? Or there are any ready to buy products like these? Thanks for help in advance.

I actually used Google maps.

I actually used Google maps.

Yeah, but how do you "extract" them from the web technically?

Madboyo

use screen shots and post them into paint or Photoshop. move right and left for a larger canvas and repeat, jointing them up as you go.

Sounds like a very tedious procedure.

Can you add a picture of your map - wich size is it?

I would think that the disadvantage there would be the Google watermark on the image... Although I would have to say that there is likely some real nice scenery to fly over out there in New Zealand... ;)

Hi Nightbomber!
I work with satellite image every day so I think I can help you :D
If you tell me exactly what you need and at wich scale (of the map) I can try to post some sample image.

Have a nice fly

Hi Pav!
Thanks for your help! I dream of having a satellite map of Dover ("Cliffs of Dover":)) or other seaside region of southern England where aerial dogfights durin Battle of Britan took place. It would be great to recreate that scenery even with today's images. Would be great if there are no modern installations there, but it's up to you to decide. Scale? hmmm... have no idea. Something visible from a 1000 metres height (?). I'd like to print it on A0 format. Many thanks!

Hi NightBomber..
Here is an attempt I have done. It is in low res (50 dpi) yust to give you an idea.

14339

An image A0 size tiff format at 600 dpi is 1.6 Gb...

Let me know

I know this part of Dover - there is the place where Louis Bleriot landed when he flew over the Channel for the first time. Magnificent place, especialy in early sunrising - you can not choose better base for your mat! ;)

Ooooh that is nice :)

Me and my gaming group are looking for a decend image for a map for ages and the only solution we came up with is cut&paste images of Google Earth piece by piece, too.

We found this image of Saint-Fergeux in France via Gogle Earth we find very nice :)

If we could have this image at 120 x 180cm we would be very grateful :)

Hi Daniel,
do you need exactly this area or something similar?
If you need the same area can you give me Lat - Long from google earth to easily find it?
No problem for the size...

Have a nice "map"....

Me? No, that was just a comment. I am not decided how I will solve my mats - I need to consider more options beforo choosing the mat. I just admire your choice of location ;) But thank you for your willingness.

Thank you PAV! :)

The town at the right border of the map is Saint-Fergeux and should be at
49° 33′ 50.04″ N, 4° 12′ 48.96″ E
49.5639°, 4.2136°

Here is yust the preview (downsampled by the forum), if you tell me file format (jpg/tiff) and dpi (resolution) I'll find a way to send it to you...

PAV

@Dam-sam: Sorry but I did't see that you and Kaiser are both "Daniel"

PAV, this place is perfect! Just the best for summer 1940 aerial fights. it's within a real range of stukas, so different missions may be played on such a mat. Direct me how to download it and what resoultion should it be. Thank you very much:thumbsup:

Hi Lorenzo/PAV
yes basically this area :) But i have no idea from what altitude a plane would be if it would touch the "board" so to speak. A view if the aircrafts would fly at an altitude of ca 2000m would be favourable.

My friend says the resolution should be 600dpi as optimal but 300dpi are good enough.

Hi Kaiser, I changed the "altitude" to about 2000 meters, and this is the "field of view"..http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14508&d=1307969745
To much fields? Do you like more houses?

I just have a little problem... 120cm X 180cm 600dpi tiff format is about 3.5 GB..
I can split it in 4 .rar files and send you the link to download...

More houses would be nice. If you scroll to the left you find this area:

Also Doug, you can get some great vinyl ones with mat finishes so no glare for the lights at Game On (http://gameonterrainmats.com/aerial-view-terrain-mat). Luis (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/member.php?3075-IBERIAN-SHADOW) is the guys name and he is on the forum too. He can custom design using any high resolution photo. You can see lots of them at my home page (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/member.php?82-CappyTom) in my albums. Also check out the File (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1011) section for more mats to download.

Finally, if anybody is still inetrested, a printed-on-vinyl mat may look like this one on the table.

Sweet mat. But what is the joke all about? Everyone is laughing.

If anyone wants a historically correct location for where the RAF intercepted bombers and fighters then the South Coast of England between Littlehampton and Brighton saw a lot of action. Angmering on Sea is pockmarked with bomb craters where the bombers used to ditch ordinance before heading home.

:D I simply can not remember that! It had nothing to do with the actual game, though!
