Attilio,
Bizarre as it may sound, from your part of the world, an easy way to get an appreciation of the topography of the Gallipoli Peninsula is not that far south of Rome. As you approach Monte Cassino from the south-east (San Pietro?) the view across to the abbey is very reminiscent of the peninsula from the Asiatic side: you just have to imagine the river valley to your front (Garigilano?) is full of water to represent the Dardenelles Strait. Sorry my memory for Italian placenames is a little rusty at the moment.

It could be (map from Wikipedia). :)

Garigliano is the river and S. Pietro Infine a little town east of Cassino (there are a little collection of little town with saint names near Cassino).

Your memories of Italian topoghrapy are excellent. Congrats!

Attilio,
Thanks; the viewpoint I recall was along Route 6, and of course the river valley is the Rapido. I must have been having a 'senior moment'.
Cheers,

Route 6 is known as Via Casilina Nord (driving it towards northwest you arrive in Rome)
