Upon hearing that German Headquarters were being established along a particular road, the British sent out a RE8 to take pictures to confirm the report with a camera. A Nieuport 17 escorted the ugly two seater. Near the target, an Albatross DIII rose to meet the mission. The N17 swept off to one side to avoid a head on pass with the V-strutter, exchanging a long range shot before turning on to the Bosche's tail. That took quite a while as the N17 is not as nifty as its reputation, and it is a bit slow. In that time, the RE8 unimaginatively approached the first photo target and the German got off its first shot. The wily Kraut then took up the tradition placeclose on the tail of the two seater and saw the ungainly recon plane explode. By that time, the N17 had showed up and began riddling the V Strutter from behind, at least seeking revenge for the downed photographers. The Albatross seemed to soak up all the little Nieuport could put out. On the other hand, in one long range exchange, the Nieuport took almost half the damage it could handle. Wheeling in the air, turning, and twisting, both planes sought to bring the other into range and sights. While the Nieuport got off a few more shots than the Albatross, and wounded the pilot, it suffered several jams which required tricky flying both to clear and to stay safe. After several close calls, the two planes exchanged unpleasant close range fire. Although the Albatross had taken far more shots, and form two planes, the paper mache Nieuport fell to flaming pieces at the same time as the V Strutter finally disintegrated in the air.

The sky was very clear with all three planes down...

Gaming notes:

One of our players has great 11x17 full color prints of aerial photography, four of which we put under plexiglass for out playing surface.

Another irritating bit about overlapping stands as the N17 twice out maneuvered the DIII, but touched so could not shoot. That rule also excluded what would have been an unpleasant close range exchange.

nice AAR...any chance you can load some of the aerial photos ya'll used?

Sorry Jim, they were prints by that player's friend, so none of us have the images.

Nice AAR Rocky! However, it's become quite apparent that you don't approve of the overlapping base rule. My advice . . . make your own house rule that says overlapping bases do not affect the firing sequence. See how it plays out and if you like it you can keep the rule. That way you'll enjoy the game more. :)

You could also make a house rule that overlapping only blocks firing if one base overlaps another's center dot/post. That way you can still fire when the planes overlap slightly.

Flying as Albert Ball with his method of diving under the enemy and the popping them with his Lewis aimed upwards, I can only hit them if the bases are overlapping, so as Larry and Scott suggest, do your own thing. That is what makes this game so much fun.

My son now prefers playing two-seaters. He prefers the second gun, and probably not having to worry to much about manuever. I may play this scenario with him.

Hmm...there's "touching" and there's "touching"...we draw a "C" damage card if planes collide (touch)...the bases might be touching...but the planes might not, so it's a game call. I appreciate the frustration on not being able to get a shot off though. We generally don't use altitude so don't have the same problems you had here.

I took your idea and played the scenario with my nine year old son, Christopher. We don't have any RE8's. Instead my son used a DH 4 and a Neuport 23 against my Albatross D3. He won two out of three. First battle, I shot down the DH 4 and went home, damaged. Second battle, the DH 4 shot down my Albatross. Third battle, the DH 4 took pictures and both allied planes ran for their lines. Great battle! thanks again.

A DH4 alone can often handle an Albi Diii. Good of you to give him the edge.

We were all experienced players so balanced the game with the fragile Entente planes.

Sounds good, I really like the Narrative too. Makes me feel like I was there pushing plastic with you!
