Hi all. Here is some of what I had the pleasure to experience at Origins 2021.
Ahh, the registration line. I got there early enough so it took only 10-15 minutes.
307277
The first game of the show was run by Glenn (Jago85). Everyone loves a Med Cruise. Bf 109s vs Martlets.
I flew a Martlet and splashed a 109 at the cost of 2 Martlets!
Some veteran Wings pilots, Karl on the left and Phil on the right.

A fun game by Glenn on a great looking mat.
More to come....

I'd swear that map looks almost like the Axis & Allies Miniatures "Island Fortress Betio" scenario...

Great to see some of the action at Origins, and a great game next to my heart Malta.
Thanks for posting Peter.

Games, games, games! Good to see people back in action.
I'd swear that map looks almost like the Axis & Allies Miniatures "Island Fortress Betio" scenario...
It's one of the ones made by Luis (IBERIAN SHADOW), before he passed away.

Origins went extremely well this year considering the situation. Attendance to the event was at 45% of what it normally would have been. Even with this everyone did a great job. The following people helped to make it a successful event. Peter (Teaticket), Karl (Jager), Glen (Jago85), and Ray (The G Dog) did an outstanding job running top notch events. They all came well prepare and went with things as situations arose. I am very proud to be gaming with these guys. This year we also worked with Ares as we have before. It was another incredible year of cooperation between our two groups. I must thank Olivia and Nathan for being so super to work with. It's hard to believe in about eight months we will be doing it again. The next time we will have a Lend-Lease member present. We will also be holding the first Harry Paul Materne III Memorial Tournament. I can't wait for both these things to happen.

Assuming there is not some type of misfortune, I am there next year.
Glad it went well Jim!

Many thanks for posting the photos.
I'm glad to hear the event went well, Pandemic notwithstanding.
It's great to see folks gathering around a "Wings" table and having fun (and yes, that's a superb map!).
Here's a view of my games, plus one of Glenn's (Jago85). I have some pics from Peter's Adriatic game I'll post later.
Med cruise (Glenn)
Someone goes down fast, while I'm coming to help.
307327
I get some revenge
307328
And I get blown away!
307329
Respawning back into the action
307330
And get a shot up again!
307331
And he had help
307332
That left a mark!
307333
And down again!
307334
My wingman is hogging all the "donuts"
307335
And more donuts!
307336
Luft '46:
Sadly, I had only 2 players for this one
Take you starting positions:
307337
307338
Just out of range
307339
And we're past them
307340
Phillip makes his approach
307341
And a touch to close!
307342
However, the planned reverse was perfect!
307343
We'll just tuck under here!
307344
Yeh, that close ranged cannon fire just shreds the bomber (explosion is 25 points)
But it's still flying (83 points for the B-29!)
307345
And now the Mustangs come to the rescue:
307346
We have a smoker!
307347
And that's the game. Note: the D guns did only half damage against the fighters, and had ammo limits, but
Phillip figured he was going down anyway, so cut loose.
307348
Marauders in the Pacific:
Your mission: torpedo the Japanese ships. Again, a light turnout (3 players), so I did not use the ships' AAA
307349
Glenn makes his approach: the rookie Zero pilots haven't been able to line up a shot yet.
307350
Fish is away, and time to fly home.
307351
307352
Good thing the AAA's been turned off; both planes would probably been hammered
307353
Direct hit! Scratch one tin can!
307354
307355
"Keep him busy, little buddy, while I make a break for it!"
307358
OK!
307356
It's a tail chase!
307359
One last shot! But he missed. The B-26 gets off the board.
307360
Bug Hunt:
4 players this game :( We have Rickenbacker and Baracca escorting the flying bombs, while Goring
and MvR (yes, in a D.VII!) see who can swat the most bugs.
Eddie gets an early shot in on MvR, with a bit of smoke
307361
Meanwhile, Goring gets a shot at a bug.
307362
MvR ignores the SPAD, and hunts down bugs
307363
And Goring gets doubletapped!
307364
The first bug gets away.
307365
MvR bags a bug, but gets bagged himself!
307366
With both Germans down for respawning, we reset (but the SPADs kept their damage),
Passing in the night, and colliding with a bug (no damage)
307367
The SPADs colliding, not so lucky!
307368
And MvR bags another bug (Rick was the top scorer, with 4 bugs (plus 1 via collision; no points for that one)
and 2 SPADs)
307369
Yeh, ramming bugs does hurt sometimes. Though it did get the bug.
307370
Another one bagged, explosively!. Due to my old brains miswriting my scenario rules, I drew from the wrong deck to see if the bugs exploded when shot at. No bugs exploded in this game, much to everyone's disappointment.
307371
And Eddie becomes MvR's 101st victim!
307372
Goring tries MvR's method, and finds out it hurts him as much!
307373
More close-in work, more collisions!
307374
And Goring goes down again!
307375
A refreshed Goring, having just nailed a bug that almost got to the edge, finds Eddie waiting! BOOM Phillip!
307376
Finally, MvR finishes the day with a SPAD kill.

Glad to see from your AAR's what a load of fun you all had. Wish I could've joined you but between severely compromised immune system and new full knee replacement my recovery negated my ability to join the festivities...looking forward to return to duty and joining you next year! Truly, the best part of ORIGINS is not the games but the camaraderie. Congrats on pulling it off.

Here are a few shots of the first game I ran on Thursday afternoon. Aerodrome Attack. Jasta 30 Pfalz DIIIas are out to strafe an American aerodrome but a flight of N28s don't think that's a good idea.
If you think you have a cunning plan, put your head down.
307383
The lead J30 planes making for the hangars. A pair in the back try to distract some N28s away from the strafers.
307384
The Americans.
307385
Dropping down to attacking altitude.
307386
First kill. Bad news for the Germans.
307387
Hangars are damaged but get a breather when both Pfalz's guns jam.
307388
The Americans are hot on the tails of the Huns.
307389
The Americans do a good job in breaking up the raid. One hangar was destroyed early on but others were only damaged.
307390
Great pics and looks like some fun games
Hmm, Martlets, Pfeils and US Nieuports. Single word: extraordinary!

Here is the second game I ran, Friday at 9am. A WGS France 1940 game, "Destroy the Bridge". Here the French have sent a string of bombers out to destroy a bridge over the Meuse. The four Breguet and Potez bombers had to fly from one corner of the 4' x 6' mat to the other to have a chance to make their drop. For the French to win they had to get three off the table, two for a draw.
The bombers were flown as drones, only flying straight and slow as they were at the beginning of their run.
Each of the six pilots flew two planes. A MS 406 and a Hawk 75 for the French, 109Es for the Germans. Planes were re-spawned 2 cards after being downed.
Before the game I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Durst from our Thursday night online gaming squadron. He was sporting a nice T-shirt. Ah...I really have no idea what it means.:please:
The front honors Mike Jacobs, the back....;)
307403
307404
Here we have the start of the bomber run. Robert and Ray chatting in the backcround.
307405
A Morane 406 pays heavily for a close encounter with a 109.
307406
The Germans miscalculate and close in at altitude 4 while the French bombers fly on by beneath at altitude 2.
307407
A brave French fighter sacrifices itself as a shield for the bombers.
307408
The two lead bombers get away from the interceptors while the action focused on the trailing two bombers.
307409
307410
307411
The tail end Charlie bomber went down and as the game ended I surmised the last bomber would have been caught up with and also downed. We agreed it ended in a draw.
Once the Germans caught on and dropped to engagement altitude the battle heated up nicely. It was great to get some of my French air force on the table for the first time.

Game 3, Friday at noon, SOG, "Where the Lines Meet".
Here we have a French attempt to break the blockade when a squall blew the Royal Navy off station. The RN recovered quicker than the French had hoped and caught them along the coast just before they could make their break. Each side had 4 SOLs. Weather gauge in favor of guess who? (RN of course) The French start off just south of an island off the French coast of Brittany.
I have a nice water mat with islands that I used in place of the SOG mats.
Here are the starting positions. The French must get 3 ships off into the open ocean off the far edge to claim victory. Pics from each side's view.
307434
307433
The French started off with some interesting tacking causing the RN to make fun of French seamanship.
307432
The lead French ship keeps on its course as the RN break their formation. Seems they are caught a bit flat footed.
307431
A French and RN ship come very close to becoming entangled.
307430
The lead French ship has the trailing RN ships confused and they change course and collide. Not to be outdone the third French SOL runs aground on the large island....twice! The excuse of looking for stranded ladies seemed a bit thin.
307429
A few broadsides are fired but the French get past a RN SOL.
307428
The lead French SOL crossed the T and pummels a RN ship.
The fourth French SOL heads to the left leaving two RN ships behind. Now it is the French needling the RN about their seamanship skills as a RN SOL runs aground on the island.
307427
The lead French SOL entangles with a RN SOL. With both crews severely depleted neither elect to board.
The next shot has the RN SOL striking it's colors! Vive l' Emperor!
307426
The RN SOL runs aground for a second time. Must be looking for those rumored poor stranded French ladies.
Luckily for the RN the lead French SOL also strikes it's colors after a well placed broadside. God Save the King!
A little too late though as now the RN is out of position and three French make it to the open ocean.
307425
Before the game started I had clearly made the point that the ships will move faster than you think and we still had 4 brushes with the island. To the credit of the French captain he kept his head and did get out to the open sea.
I was schooled on a rule I had missed. My thanks go out to the captain that pointed out this to me as this was the first official Sails game I have run at a convention. Back to the rulebook to find out any other things I may have messed up.
It was a fun game and I look forward to running more in the future.

Glenn Francis ran a Russian Front WGS game, 109s vs P-39s. The Russian P-39s out gunned the poor 109Es. Three of us flew 2 planes each. I flew a pair of P-39s and ended with 4 kills to 1 of my P-39s downed. It wasn't a fair fight but who wants that?

Now I have seen the real "Boaty boys." Pete.
Chris must have been talking about them! ;) and I also see that Tim weathered the storm without having to resort to the Dried Frog Pills. His therapy is having some good results. When he comes over for Origins next year he may even be able to walk past a table with ships that have sails without having a relapse.:hmm::slysmile:

Game 4, Saturday noon, "Hunting Martians". This scenario is an attack on a Martian landing zone. The earthlings are out to destroy the Martian base. One large round Martian base surrounded with four terrain pieces that could trip up the Tripods.
After a couple of moves into the game the Martians have spread out around their base. The incoming planes jocky around to try to get in shots at the unshielded sides.
307500
A cannon armed SPAD XII takes a shot but comes up empty. This beautiful SPAD that I just bought off of Clipper had the worst luck, I may have to return it. You've never seen so many zeros shot from a cannon!
307501
I had to keep in line with the game's title and have a Triplane on the board.
307502
Even after being strongly warned to stay away from the terrain, a Martian had to find out for himself. He was lucky no plane was in position to shoot him while the shields were down.
307503
The poor SPAD XII now has engine damage and is delayed getting back into the fight by constantly stalling.
307504
One Martian needs a larger recharge that he gets from his base while the attacking planes are elsewhere.
307505
The Martians are circling the wagons around their base. One rocket armed N16 was destroyed in the process of releasing it's rockets at the base. A close call for the Martians. The N16 will be back. (respawned at the top of the photo you can only see the base)
307506
Another N16 gets in close to the Martian gathering.
307507
307508
Swirling planes and dancing Martians, more like a game of Twister!
307509
307510
Third time's a charm. The N16's 3rd attempt at attacking the base finally succeeds! One rocket hits home but the other misses the base completely but serious damage has been done.
307511
One Martian is finally destroyed along with the base! Earth claims a victory in this encounter but there are still more Martians to hunt down.

Game 5, Saturday 4pm, "If it floats it will be attacked", should have been called, "If it floats it will be ignored". Here we have an Italian raid on an Austrian island installation. When the Italians arrive they find an unexpected Austrian gunboat nestled between the islands. The gunboat belongs to Karl which he got from Neil (Skafloc).
Familiar masks join in antoher game of Wings.
307513
Ah-ha! A gunboat is spotted! Decisions-decisions, keep to the plan of attacking the facilities or sink the gunboat? (My lead into the scenario already spoiled this attempt at adding tension to the fight didn't it?)
307517
Opposing planes position themselves for the imminent fight.
307516
Support from the gunboat boosters the Austrian morale.
307515
The small Austrian fighters aren't sure how they are going to tackle the large Capronis.
307514
307518
This Austrian caom doen't work so well over the water. The Caproni tail gunner hits an oil line and ugly black smoke trails the Albatros.
307519
Another Ausrtian gets a critical hit on it's engine, cursing it for the rest of the battle.
307521
More bad news for the Austrians as a flying boat bursts into flames.
307522
OH NO! Another Austrian sporting flames! The Italians are having their way with the Austrians.
307523
The yellow Caproni skirts the gunboat after taking some serious hits from it. The pilot lines up one of the installations for a bomb drop.
307524
The chaos of war. Or is it just the child in us, "My turn to move"!
307525
The action moves to over the island.
307526
Overall the battle was quite tame. There was little shooting or the usual destruction mayhem. The Italians may have been distracted by the unexpected gunboat and did minimal damage to the installations. The Austrians cheered as the Italians turned for home without accomplishing their mission.

The final game, game 6, Sunday 9am. A French CAP patrol engages a German flight of Stukas intent on attacking the fortified artillery positions on the Marfee Heights behind Sedan. A fierce fight follows when a flight of Bf 109s join in.
Being Sunday morning we were correct in not expecting much of a turnout. I had 3 players while Jim's WGF game drew the same. Jim's game started an hour later at 10. He started off flying in my game so I'd have 4 pilots but left when his game started. I took over pushing the planes he had started with. French pilots flew a D.520 and a MS.406 while the Germans flew 2 109s and 2 Stukas with 2 bombs each. There were 8 fortified artillery positions that the Germans were out to destroy.
The bad guys.
307527
307528
The good guys.
307529
307530
A Morane slips under the 109 and smokes a Stuka.
307531
One of the Moranes doesn't react well to being hit by a 109's cannons.
307532
A pair of 109s get behind the French.
307533
One Stuka is downed moments before it would have began it's terrifying dive. The occupants of the fortified gun position cheer to their comrade in the sky.
307534
The conga line forms. Two French fighters get behind a Stuka with a 109 behind the French.
307535
The Stuka desperately tries to shake the Morane 406 as it lines up it's target. One Morane turns off and the 109 keeps on target trying to protect the Stuka.
307536
307537
An unopposed Stuka begins it's dive approach.

One D520 is downed, evening the kills, but so far no targets have been hit.
307539
A 406 see it's end. The Germans are getting the upper hand in the air and an artillery post is damaged below a diving Stuka.
307540
307541
307542
One position is destroyed while the fighters look around for targets.
307543
307544
307545
With it's bombs dropped the Stukas turn for home. The 109s form a screen to keep the French away from the slow Ju87s flight home.
307546
If I recall correctly the Germans destroyed 3 positions and damaged 2. In the air the Germans were definitely ahead. It was a draw or slightly in favor of the Germans.
Sadly after this game everything was packed up and goodbyes were exchanged as we all headed for home. The ball is already rolling for nexzt year's Origins. I hope more of you can come and join in. It's undoubtedly one of the best events for Wings and Sails there is.

I would just like to thank those members who put on such a splendid series of games in support of our hobby. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing these games let alone running them over several days. :thankyou: No doubt the games masters will be putting the participents forward for the appropriate Origins medals on the usual submissions requests.
Rob.
OK, My PoV of Peter's game 5
Adriatic action:
Italians bombing some island bases, with a surprise gunboat added (built by Neil (Skafloc)
307547
Capronis and Hanriots vs. an assortment of A-H scouts.
307548
And the action opens.
307549
I take a dive, to avoid the incoming fire. Unfortunately, a long shot kills my front gunner.
307550
And it works, as most of the action heads to the other side.
307551
The gunboats AAA gets me! Half damage for the bomber (12 pts.)
307552
All alone, and lined up with the base.
307553
A partial hit on the base. Some MG fire from the gunboat, and a passing strafe from a respawning scout leaves me with 1 point of damage left, and a desire for the board edge.

Great scenarios, as always, Peter.
Interesting mix of planes - nice to see your French especially.
The mats are gorgeous (meant to mention that on your Sails game as well) and I really like the cockpit canopy of the smoking Stuka.
:sAprvd:
P.S. I liked the Martian one as well.
Next year you have to attend!
I am hoping to get there next year.

Hell I finally just got a real cell phone. Haven't even tried to take a selfie. I am kicking myself for not taking some dedicated people pics. Next time!

I know some of who are aerodrome members but not the players who I have had occasionally at my tables. I'll go through my photos and submit all that I recognize as members.

It certainly looks like you all had a great time at Origins. Did Ares perchance have a stall there and. if so, were you able to extract any news from them?
A cannon armed SPAD XII takes a shot but comes up empty. This beautiful SPAD that I just bought off of Clipper had the worst luck, I may have to return it. You've never seen so many zeros shot from a cannon!
That's why I adjust the deck to 4 zeros, Peter, so it's more proportional, like the MGs, as a direct firing weapon rather than a flak gun.
Great looking games as always

They had a booth, and staff running games in the area, but I didn't have a chance to ask. There was an extra level of confusion (from GAMA mostly), and the heads were sorting things out.
Jim may have gotten something, though he didn't tell us. From past experience, the Ares USA head knows little more than we do here.

The version I heard last time it came up on the side when I was discussing other work I do for them--and remember, this is my personal recollection NOT an official announcement--is that IIRC this time we only get the balloons and maybe some "paper" accessories like AA-gun cards, no nice neat "Solitaire Game in a Box" like original Balloon Busters was.

Sooner or later, I have to get back to an Origins convention. If I did, I might end up playing every WGF game available.

Thanks again Peter for these new pictures and the sharing of this event
I took the liberty to make an information link on the forum le CIRQUE VOLANT : https://wingsofwar.1fr1.net/t3113-origins-fair-game-2020-2021
Where the French players will surely be delighted to see French Warbirds in the US sky :)

Congrats on pulling it off.
missed seeing you there tom. hopefully next year!

Thank you for posting all those great pictures. It is truly good to see so many folk having fun in all of the Ares games. Loved all the maps and planes and I particularly liked the Austrian gunboat. Well done you guys. :drinks:
