Yes, now you can get full-color airplane prints from Shapeways! No painting is necessary -- these miniatures are ready to use (though you may need to heat them a little to straighten the wings). The Mimaki printers Shapeways uses can replicate 10 million different colors (I'm not sure about the HP printers). I'll keep this top post up to date with new full-color 3D prints as they're made available, rather than making a new post with each plane and color scheme. If you want to see some examples of real prints, check out the follow-ups to this post and others. (I use computer renders because I don't have any examples of many of these prints, especially the newer designs which have never yet been printed.)

The URL is: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/raf?section=%3D%3D%3D%3D+Full-Color+Models+%3D%3D%3D%3D&s=0. You can use the links on the left of that page if you just want to look at full-color planes of a particular type. Clicking on the pictures below will also take you directly to the Shapeways model. As of August 2022, planes are available in High Definition Full Color plastic and Full Color Nylon 12 (MJF); the former being higher quality and the latter being more affordable. See https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?35581-Material-HDFC-vs-Full-Color-Nylon-12-(MJF) for comparisons between the materials.

If you want notification each time a new paint scheme is made available, subscribe to the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ReducedAircraft. If you want to see every new post there (rather than just a few), go to the group, click the "Joined" button > Manage Notifications > All Posts.

I added an Albatros D.III and SPAD 13. There will probably be more color schemes for those added in coming weeks.

There are some good photos of the actual prints in this thread (https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?34188-Shapeways-planes-in-full-color) and on the Etsy site.

I took up the challenge of doing Hans Böhning's Albatros D.Va, and -- while difficult -- I have to say it was a lot of fun trying to get it right. It is a paint scheme that would be very difficult to paint and decal by hand. I'll post a photo of the actual model once one arrives.

For color choices I used nose and lozenge-wrapping that Wingnut Wings recommended, but the wheel covers and Bavarian blue closer to the Jasta Colors book.

There are a lot of exciting Albatros D.V/D.Va paint schemes, so you can expect more of them in coming months.

Yes, those Bavarian planes are beautiful and would be a challenge to paint and decal!

I have the same problem when trying to decide which paint scheme to tackle next! So many colorful ones to choose from. (The Wingnut Wings documents and Jasta Colors I are excellent sources.)

You probably noticed the two new D.IIIs which were done in collaboration with Mike "OldGuy59". And I did the Meierdirks D.V because I remember painting that exact plane about 40 years ago, in 1:285 scale.

On a side note: Etsy keeps urging me to add a video to my listings. Now ordinarily I would think that was more suitable for some crafty thing with moving parts. But I thought...why not try to take advantage of their video hosting?

So -- after several hours of computer rendering time -- I added one to the Fokker D.VII listing. Here is the URL of just the video. Hopefully this link doesn't change too often.

I received the two Jasta 5 color prints. The fuselage is gorgeous. The checker pattern and striping came out wonderful. For some reason I thought the wings would be a bit more darker, but maybe not. I may have had an unrealistic expectation there. Overall, extremely nice. I have a side view of each model. I then took a top and bottom view of the two models with the Albatros from the recently re-released dual packs.

Thanks for posting the side by side pics with the Ares model. Are the green/purple on the top wing "supposed" to be historically the same color/scheme?

Yes, they are.

Trouble is, no one knows the EXACT colour, and no computer screen can accurately display the colour on the mini electronically (see Daryl's superb threads on "Why we'll never get it right" in the Hobby Room).

When mine arrive, I'll repaint the green and mauve to match my other planes (also the brown struts - the Germans didn't use wood for struts, so they should be dull "aluminium" or painted (usually a pale green grey in Factory Finish, or specific personal or Jasta colour).
Also, the 'Ares' mini appears to have the same green for the wing camo AND the Jasta 5 squadron colour - these should be different, not identical.

Thanks for the photos, Dan! I received a few prints too and yes, the wings on mine too came out lighter than I expected. (And I have a high-end color-calibrated monitor.) I suspect the translation of RGB colors in the texture maps to pigments in the plastic is not perfectly linear.

The green and mauve I chose were some of the colors from Windsock: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?25339-Color-German-Green-amp-Lilac-Mauve. (As you can see from that page, there was a wide variety of shades from various actual samples.) But maybe I'll favor the darker selections for subsequent planes, or maybe apply a little "reverse gamma" to the colors to make the mid-tones darker. For current ones you can simply say they've seen a bit more sun-fading than others. ;)

I added the first Pfalz D.XII! This one was particularly fun because it used strips of the lozenge fabric for the rib tape instead of a solid color. As always, a card for the plane is posted on Wings of Linen: https://static.miraheze.org/linenwiki/0/00/PfalzD12-1445-18-card.jpg.

I expect a few more paint schemes for it will follow shortly. (Though one of my favorite schemes has a swastika logo [way before it was adopted in the WWII era], and that can be problematic in some countries. Maybe I'll just skip that one.)

Also, on the Albatros D.V's, I reduced the weathering on the wings and darkened the green and lilac somewhat, as well as changing the struts to be a light grey on some of them.

It is unfortunate that both the RNAS and the RFC were seriously 'team players', and didn't allow 'non-approved' colour schemes. The striped cowlings on RNAS 10 Sqn planes was only there for a few months, and ordered painted off from higher HQ as soon as they found out about it. The term 'Flying Circus' was used, supposedly, to ridicule the freedom (and lack of 'discipline') the German pilots had with their planes.

I do have on the list to do the S.E.5a's of Squadron 60 with blue, yellow, and red noses and diagonal stripes... those were colorful for the short time until the authorities said, "you can use any color you want, as long as it's PC10 or PC12." I had to order the Osprey "No 60 Sqn RFC/RAF" book from England to get some more details on those planes, and it just arrived yesterday.

On Vogel's D.XII I went through about six different versions until I got a spray-paint effect for the fuselage that I liked.

Here are some updates!

Another plane-type is now available: the Sopwith Dolphin. This under-appreciated fighter has never been available in full-color before (as far as I know). Four paint schemes are currently available: Carter (No.19 Sqn), Pearson (23), Bannerman (79) and Larkin (87).
OldGuy59 and I have collaborated to add two new Albatros D.III skins: Hermann Göring and Franz Ray. (See the original post above for pictures.) Many thanks to Mike.
I got back some test prints including the American SPAD 13 of Arthur Raymond Brooks. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. You can even (barely) make out the small stars in the blue field of the 20th Aero Squadron emblem. Although Project Butterfly (the project that analyzed French five-color camouflage) concluded, "There is very little contrast between the light green and beige", I thought the miniature needed a bit more contrast between the two, so I darkened the Light Green a little on all the SPAD 13s for new prints. (I also took the picture before straightening the wings, which was a fifteen second task with the blow dryer.)

No, I think the tail's span is short enough that it doesn't suffer from whatever causes the wing-droop. (Which is fixed with a little heat.)

Do these (and other shapeways aircraft) come fitted with a peg?

All my full-color ones have a WoG-style flight peg. My uncolored models do not, since a good number of people willing to put in the time to paint and decal a model have alternative methods for mounting the planes. There are sets of pegs available on Shapeways though, or you can download the STL file if you have a 3D printer.

Other Shapeways modelers differ on whether to include a peg... some do, some don't. You can rotate a 3D model on the Shapeways page if you're not sure.

I got some more full-color test prints from Shapeways and I'm pretty happy with them:

Does this mean you will be able to sell them on Shapeways soon instead of Etsy?
The colours look much richer in the models you just posted.

Alas, no movement on Shapeways allowing direct sales of that material. It would sure be nice to cut all the Etsy added costs off the products.

As for colors, maybe it's just the lighting? Though I did reduce the weathering on some of the wing colors.

I'm happy to announce the availability of full-color Fokker Triplane models! I started with these four:

310477 310478 310479 310480

There is some debate about whether Voss' plane had the factory streaked-olive paint or whether the cowl and wheels would have been repainted in Jasta 10 chromium yellow, so I included both and I'll let you decide.

More paint schemes will follow, e.g. Lörzer, Papenmayer, Preiß, Stark, but I'm not sure which and in what order.

Appears there isn't much you cannot do with that monster printer. Any thought to doing 4 aircraft in a group release from the same Jasta? (Option to buy individually of course). I'd propose some, but everyone has their favorites...........:sAprvd:

I don't think Shapeways pricing would give much of a price break to printing two or more full-color prints at a time, unlike some of the other materials. So it would be strictly for marketing reasons. You could put together your own bundle of, say, Jasta 18 planes though.

Can I cast a vote for Papenmayer.

I moved it to the front of the queue. I have a question, though.

At this time, Jasta Boelcke (2) planes had their horizontal tail surfaces painted black on one side and white on the other. Most of the paintings of Papenmeyer's plane -- all from the left -- show the left fuselage rear as white (from the side crosses back). Here's a link to an example: http://www.fokkerdr1.com/Profiles/images/WB_214_17.jpg

Yet this photo...with Papenmeyer's plane in the foreground... clearly shows the fuselage rear -- aft of the side-cross -- as a dark color. Was the fuselage rear painted in the same way as the horizontal tail plane... white on the left side and black on the right side? Is that how the Ares Kempf is done?

The Kempf and Baumer Fokker Dr.I have the Black on the rights side of the wing and white on the left side of the wing.

As for the part of the plane under the wing. Here are the two Ares Jasta 2 models from their website.

Flying Helmet has researched Jasta 2 quite a bit. Maybe he may have a good answer.

Thanks for the nod!

Unfortunately, I haven't got as far as the introduction of the Fokkers - I'm currently mired in mid-'17, figuring out the Albatros D.III/D.V switch-over.

After a quick skim through Osprey's Aviation Elite 26 - "Jagdstaffel 2 'Boelcke; every single photograph and every single colour Profile shows either black or white fuselage sides beneath the horizontal stabilisers, on both the Fokker Dr.1 and the Fokker D.VII.

Kempf flew at least 2 different Fokker Dr.1s with Jasta 'Boelcke', and these underwent changes to their Staffel schemes and personal identification, so it is possible that there was a triplane with "Fokker streaky" extending back to the rudder, but I can't find any pictorial or written evidence without embarking on an in-depth search.

My immediate conclusion is that 'Ares' have made a mistake - the "Fokker streaky" on the minis is probably incorrect.

So too is that jpg 3-view in Camelbeagle's post above.

More research needed.

Unfortunately the latest Aeronaut book on the Fokker Dr1 has nothing on it. I have found a web site that has 2 photos with Kempf's Dr1, one each with a black/white, white/black tail, not streaky.

The schemes I would like to see (and purchase) are Albatros D.III/D.V and Pfalz D.III/IIIa with multiple rings around the fuselage; these are almost impossible to paint, or to decal using stripes, around the "conical" fuselages.

Thanks! The old Windsock Datafile for the Hanriot HD.1 has a layout for the 5-color French camouflage on an HD.1, so if I can determine that any of those plane used it, I can do those wings with confidence. I suspect that if the sides were camouflaged, the wings would have been too.

The hard one is Olieslagers' No.8 with the side-stripes. That one looks like a solid dark color to me, with some silver-white on the inboard part of the lower wing.

The Belgians often overpainted the upper surfaces of the wings in a single dark olive green (sometimes, but not always, obliterating the roundels).
This was most commonly seen on the Nieuport 17s/23s in Belgian service. In the case of the N.23 at least, the "factory" aluminium dope was left untouched on the lower wing upper surface where it was adjacent to the fuselage; 2 or 3 wing ribs at least.
See my Belgian Nieuport 23s for colour photos!

Trying to find some pictures of actual planes.

I see model kits built of Coppens and De Meulemeester. The interpretation is that their planes had a standard camo scheme. The wheels, engine cowl, and tails had some personal coloring.

The Olieslagers looked like he striped the top of the fuselage with a green and white/silver patter. The tail and engine cowl had a similar pattern.

Will keep looking for some actual pictures.

It was interesting reading about Baracchini, who had a remarkable career given he only flew for about two seasons due to injuries.

And even though 72ª Squadriglia wasn't very prominent, I've always liked their Lion of St. Mark logo. I've even got some of those painted up at 1:285 scale. (Older references have the lion in red, but some modern references prefer black, and I agree. The lion in black&white photos looks darker than any of the roundel and fin colors.)

Yes, I did.

Fortunately, I already had 30-odd 'Nexus' and 'Ares' Fokker Dr.1s, and 20-odd 'Nexus' and 'Ares' Pfalz D.IIIs, plus several bags of extra pegs, so these were easy to accommodate.

I already possessed 4 'Shapeways' Pfalz D.XIIs painted up by myself, so had ordered 4 custom Pfalz D.XII bases from Keith, about a year before he shut up shop.
Had I known he was closing, I would have acquired lots more bases from him! :(

I copied and printed out 4 'Q' decks for my Jasta 32b Pfalz D.XIIs, before discovering the 'Q' decks in one of the 'Nexus' Booster card packs, of which I have quite a few, so i actually needn't have bothered making my own at all.

Super news! Shapeways just opened up this material to be ordered directly from the Shapeways marketplace! No more Etsy! (Yes, this was a surprise to me. There was no advance warning.)

I've done the work to transition all my full-color models over. Go to https://www.shapeways.com/shops/raf?section=%3D%3D%3D%3D+Full-Color+Models+%3D%3D%3D%3D&s=0

This means:

Cheaper prices -- since the prices no longer have to cover substantial Etsy fees and taxes. For instance, a SPAD 13 is about US$10-$11 cheaper on Shapeways direct.
No more double taxation -- sometimes both Shapeways and Etsy ended up charging sales tax and/or VAT. Or neither charging it and then having a package show up with a tax bill attached.
Easier tracking -- you can see what stage your order is in directly from the Shapeways website.
Better tools -- you can use their 3D viewer to examine a model from all angles. You can use their search engine.
Another material choice -- for $3 extra you can have them spray the model with a matte spray. Though I didn't notice much difference on one I got.
Better support -- you can more easily go directly to support@shapeways.com since you ordered directly from them.

The model is fine -- and it prints okay -- but it appears that their preview tool doesn't handle the fact that the propeller and guns have separate texture maps from the rest. I'll file a bug on their forums, but who knows when they'll fix it.

I've been using the Above The Lines/Above the Trenches/Over the Front series for spelling and they have it as Karl Allmenröder. I've run across a lot of places where authors differ on name spellings. Which is understandable with Russian names but I'm not sure why there is variance on Latin-alphabet names, e.g. Karl vs. Carl, Aloys vs. Alois.

Does anyone know whether this Belgian Hanriot (No.78), now a museum plane, has camouflage upper wing surfaces? (Or, more importantly, had them during the war...) I've seen somewhere that it was flown by Olieslagers, but I don't have solid confirmation of that either. (Note, there's another out there with similar cowl markings but not the same decking and fin.) I think I can just make out camo on the top surface of the lower wing, but that might just be lighting and shadows. I'm also stumped about the text on the headrest.

Announcing a new type available in full-color: the iconic Sopwith Camel!

311699 311700
311701 311702

While most Camel paint schemes are pretty mundane, I have to say the Breadner and Hinchliffe ones were very challenging! If you're wondering why Collishaw's is a different base color, it's because I did that one as PC12 (Red-Brown) rather than PC10 (Khaki). No one is really sure whether Naval Camels were in PC10 or PC12, and I thought it looked dramatic in PC12. Vaughn, an American, flew Camels with the USAS's 17th Aero Squadron, though the unit was attached to British command, and that's why it had RAF markings rather than American.

I'm sure there will be more Camel schemes in days and weeks to come. Though I think I'll take a break for a few days.

Wow, those are excellent, Daryl! The pc12 Collishaw is a nice change.
All of those units with the exception of 3 Naval are listed in encounters with Seefrosta, and I suppose it's possible that may have happened also.
For Camel encounters RNAS 4, Seaplane-Defence, RAF 203, 204, 210, 213 (Collishaw's, six encounters), and 148th Aero are mentioned.
I'd be interested in more 13 and 10 Naval if you do them... after your well-deserved break :p

Maybe the models' strut length needs to be adjusted? There might be some tension in the material with how it is printed. I don't know why that would be, but maybe there's a way to redesign the wings/struts to even it out. It is very annoying.

It would be possible, but generally I figure that anyone who is willing to do decals would probably just buy the not-full-color version for a lot less money. Should I rethink that?

These are better fighting Italian Nieuports and maybe Hanriots in 1917 than SPAD 13s in 1918. I'll have to get to the Albatros D.III(Oef) some day to add to the Austro-Hungarian 1918 options.

Hi Iain,
If you mean you need the image for each card, there is a link for each from their respective Shapeways page or from the Wings of Linen wiki for all my full-color planes. (They are generated using the actual models, since I have little artistic talent.) And I've reproduced them below. If you need help with the actual printing, I'll see if someone in-country can respond first, as the postage and duties and such are a pain for international mail.

I have thought of making the plane cards available at drivethrucards.com, but I don't know if that would be stepping too far onto Ares' turf.

Let this be notice that there are now full-color Sopwith Pups available! You can see them on the original post in this thread, and each picture is a link to the same plane on Shapeways. I will probably add a few more paint scheme in coming days.

Rather than post pictures of them this time, I thought I'd outline the process of creating them. I guess "Step Zero" is to identify which plane-type I want to do and to search for paint schemes that would look good on them. In this case I chose the Pup because it's an iconic plane that hasn't been available to the WoG community in full color before, and I had some well-documented paint schemes between Osprey books and Wingnut Wings painting guides.

Step One: I start with the 3D model I've already got for printing in Versatile or Detail Plastic on Shapeways (WSF/FUD), but I have to thicken all the surfaces to be a minimum of 1mm. I work in Blender for my 3D modeling and export to a format that Shapeways can handle. Shapeways provides a tool that shows where there are problem spots or areas that need touching up. This takes a little time but isn't too bad; it's just easy to overlook a wheel or gun barrel:
313112

Step two: the hard part; I have to map all of the surfaces of the plane onto a texture map, from which the plane will be colored. There's some art and some science to this, but mostly it's just hours of work. Once done, the model is colored by a generic multicolor image that just shows where everything is laid out on the texture map:
313113

Step three is to fill out that texture map (or "skin") with generic colors, with no individual or unit markings. This is like the first coat of paint on a plane model. It includes a little weathering and texture, but I tend to keep it pretty subtle on these models.
313114

Step four: For each individual paint scheme, I then overlay features that are particular to that plane, like the "Chin-Chow" labelling here. I also customize little things like the position of the prop for each paint scheme. Sometimes I have to do some elements in a separate program and then import them into Photoshop where I'm doing all the layers of the model's texture map. For instance, the "Chin-Chow" lettering here was first done in Inkscape and then imported to Photoshop and positioned and resized as needed.
313115

I do an overhead shot of the model and use it to create a plane card:
313116

Finally there's the work of uploading it to Shapeways, adding text, poses, links, and prices, etc.
313117

Sometimes I spot something that needs to be fixed, like adding a dash between the "Chin" and "Chow", and I have to redo some steps, but that's pretty easy.

Fortunately, most of the effort is pretty fun, especially doing the individual paint schemes. The hardest and most painstaking part is laying out the texture map in a usable yet logical pattern (Step two). There are tools to do that automatically, but they typically make a real mess of things, and using automatic layout would make steps 3 & 4 a lot harder.

Time for another plane type! This time it's the Siemens-Schuckert D.III:

313675

313676

313677

I plan to add a Siemens-Schuckert D.IV or two and another D.III paint scheme or two in coming days, when I can find time. I was surprised that Ares didn't do Udet's red D.III.
The upper wing lozenge was tricky -- it's applied at a 45° angle, then strips of it were cut to cover the ribs at the normal angle. The narrower lower wings were covered span-wise, which is also unusual. Usually the grain of the fabric runs front-to-back. It also appears the outer struts were often painted in camouflage colors too.
