Now that the U.S. has landed a rover on the surface of Mars tasked with (among other things) looking for evidence of ancient life, this article is of interest:

You guys are killing me! They probably weren't actually aliens. Before they sent us to this planet, our leaders told us to joke about it if we fall under suspicion. Just kidding!

If they do find evidence of alien life, how will that affect our view of the universe?

Many reputable scientists think that life on Earth originated from fragments from Mars that were dislodged by a meteorite that eventually came to rest on Earth. Here are just a few discussions of it:

"There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. They may have been the architects of the great pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive far, far away, amongst the stars."
