Part of my anti-COVID activity has been playing around with Martian hatches, cylinders and craters, all 3D printed. All a work-in-progress at this stage.

I left the hatch at it’s original dimensions, scaled up the Thingiverse crater to suit and created a cutout for the cylinder that I created in Tinkercad. A bit more work in Tinkercad methinks to get the cylinder fitting better in the crater!

A huge thank you to Robert for his awesome hatch design!

Not being mean but to me iIt looks like a disposable coffee cup stuck in a splodge of mashed up pumpkin. ;)

That's what they want you to think . . . to me it says "DANGER! DANGER! WILL ROBINSON!!"

I’m thinking that the crater needs to be on a circular base and then groundwork added to blend the lips of the crater with paints and maybe static grass (I’ll raid my brother’s model train supplies for that). I also want to jump back into Tinkercad and redo the cutout in the crater for the cylinder.

Looks great Wayne! Awkward question #129, can it fit a Tripod?

Well, the internal diameter is 74mm so I reckon if I printed a whole cylinder It would accomodate the base (58mm) but the partially buried cylinder means that there is not enough height - a Squid is about 43mm tall. Food for thought though!

I thought the aliens built the tripods after landing in the cylinders. I have yet to watch the BBC version though. :)

Probably assembled them is a better term, but, yes, they didn't pop tripods out on landing. Though there was no eye witnessing, Well's narrator speaks of sound of construction from the pit for a couple days.

Here is version 2 of my Martian cylinder:

288572

Tinkercad allows a maximum of 64 sides, hence the facets on the cylinder but just after setting the print going, I came across a YouTube video that shows how to overcome this so I will give that a try and print a version 3. Now to redesign the impact crater...

Still like this path, trying to get some energy (elves) together to make a playground for a major encounter . . . 6 more of my Martians are already underway, now for some cylinders . . . !
