Hauptmann Muncheburg was leading a group of 3 ME109’s on an interdiction patrol. The RAF were clearing their airfields and orders were to destroy all enemy aircraft trying to escape, importance was placed on enemy fighters. Joachim was leading Oberleutnant Herwig Knuppel and the new boy in the Squadron Oberfeldwebel Ernst Freiherr von Berg. Should have been an officer but he wanted to see action quicker and so he was an NCO. The general had placed him in his squadron with orders that he was to be protected, his father was a high up in the Party. Do not upset the high ups in the Party the general told him. So, von Berg was sandwiched between Herwig and himself.

“Damnation Smithy, three bandits at 12 o’clock! Blast straight through them and over the channel, do not’ stop for nothing”

“Ok, Dave, bash on regardless. See you in the mess, wherever that is”.

With a wave both Hurricane pilots pushed the throttle lever full forward and headed for home.

“Watch out Herwig, behind you!” Herwig glanced up at his rear-view mirror and winced as von Bergs 109 came within a whisker of taking off his tail.

The two groups of aircraft closed at a frightening speed, the staccato of machine guns boom, boom of canons announced their introductions to the lead aircraft as Knuppel’s 109 just exploded in mid-air. A machine gun bullet, tracer’ had ignited his fuel!

Von Berg thought nothing as his 109 flew through the debris and he began to pull up to start an immelman turn.

Joachim jinked the 109 left and sped between both Hurricanes, catching a hail of machine gun fire as he did so. Joachim fired at the tailing Hurricane as it moved into his sights, the Hurricane just fell apart in mid air as his shells and bullets took it apart.

Dave knew he had to bail out so as the Hurricane flipped over, he pulled the canopy open and just fell out. He waited awhile before pulling the cord.
Smithy watched the Hurricane pile into the ground in a ball of flame. Damn it Dave you did not stand a chance. He now had to get home safely. But both 109’s were behind him.

“Damnation Ernst watch out”. Joachim jinked left as von Bergs 109 screamed over and down reversing its direction and nearly colliding with his Squadron commander!

Von Berg pushed the 109 to its limit of speed. He had to catch the Hurricane.

His canon shells thudded into the rear fuselage of the Hurricane. Now you are mine he said to himself an evil grin on his face.

He was closer and again more canon shells hit the Hurricane.

Joachim was too far back but was quietly egging on the new boy. At least he is not a coward, foolhardy, inexperienced but no coward.

Von Bergs tenacity paid off, he watched his canon shells strike the Hurricane for a 3rd time, then boom. It blew up.

Both pilots returned to the airfield. Von Berg just could not shut up in the mess, explaining in detail how he out maneuevered both enemy aircraft and shot one down before it got away. He never mentioned the close near misses nor his squadron member being shot down!

I got the table free of SWMBO stuff and decided to play as many as I could before I lost it again. So it will be some time before I get to fly another.
