View Full Version : BSG - Large Ship Options

Just found an interesting ship option, for those looking at them.

263498

I'm looking into where this came from, perhaps one of the previously published games or the online version, but it would be something near reasonable for a table top model. Or not. More research is being conducted.

Anyone out there know where this fits into the BSG universe, or any stats?

PS: One of the other 21 ships assigned to Aurora's battlegroup, Cygnus is the lead ship of her class. The ship does not carry any Vipers but can house several Raptors and a heavier colonial transport

PPS: Found a dimension: 152mtrs/500' = 95cms(37-ish") for BSG-SB. Smaller than the HMS Glorious. Oh, Clipper!

Hmmm... No Colonial Shuttles or the Cygnus Gunstar, yet. However, the Heavy Raider and the Raptor are there. According to my scale program, I'd have to print the 1/32nd scale plans at 20% to get them down to 160th scale. The parts are going to be really, really, small. Although, perhaps not as bad a scaling paper models of WWII planes down to 1/200th scale.

Anyone else out there silly enough to try putting a paper Raptor together?

Scaled version (1:32 to 1:160):

PS: Pieces of this may need to be incorporated into others, as they might be too small to handle. Note: Compression on uploading this image has reduced quality. It is better directly out of Photoshop, if you get it from the site above.

Moebius makes a 1/4105 scale kit and pre-built if you can find it and they are pretty large. I can show pics if anyone is interested.

You can get the
Galactica
Pegasus
Classic Galactica

Revell produced a Battlestar Galactica model kit.

They also used to produce models of the ships from the original series.

I've got the Cylon Base Star - I built the two discs separately, and used them as space stations for "Full Thrust" tabletop battles.

I have both Revell ones in my collection of unbuilt models to still build when I have time to fit them in. maybe the time to do so can use them with the new models

Here is the built Moebius 4105 scale Galactica along with a Viper. I also include an idea for Flak / Missiles. I would love to hear thoughts on these.

Galactica is approximately 13" (330 mm) in length.

Hmmm... Interesting idea for the missiles. Better than counters on the playing mat, I think.

Although, there really shouldn't be exhaust trails on missiles in space, they did look good in the TV Show.

More pictures of the missiles?

Nice Galactica.

I wonder what ships we'll get.

I’ll take a few more pics of the missiles later tonight. For reference though, they are simply pipe cleaners with thread sealing tape wrapped around one end. I used an orange sharpie pen for the front tip.

Thanks. I’m curious to see how big Ares’ Galactica is relative to the Moebius Model.

There are 3 philosophies of having large ships in BSG.

One way is to restrict them to the smallest ships in the Rag Tag fleet, for use as targets. These can be the same scale (1/160) as the fighters. They are purely for visual effect or for boarding actions from heavy raiders.

The second way is to have larger ships, such as the Galactica, but then scale has to be changed by a factor of 25, about 1/4100. These can be used as bases or in ship to ship actions and don't look too bad when mixed with fighter models.

The third way is to have "fleet action" size of 1/10000 or smaller, with fighters represented by stands of groups or squadrons. Similar to Full Thrust.

Here is an example of the first philosophy.

The small tanker model is a kitbashed version of this

Having had exposure to BSG at Origins, I came home from the con and began looking for large-scale ship models available on E-bay and elsewhere, trying to decide where on your '3 ways' spectrum I wanted to be with things, Zoe. I am leaning toward one of the first two, rather than the third. The 'forced perspective' idea of the Galactica or Pegasus at the edge of the map and the Vipers and Raiders swirling elsewhere is attractive, as the models of the larger ships are so nicely done - they would be great 'eye candy', even if they aren't practical to 'use' in the actual game. But I really do like your 'target' idea of the smaller ships, and your conversion/kitbash of the small cargo carrier is splendid.

Food for thought, indeed - and I am sure I will succumb and take a taste in the not-too-distant future...;)

All the best,
Matt

I have been toying with how best to convert capital ships into the game when I realized two things. First, it is a lot of work if I want to do it right. Second, it detracts from the basic concept of the game.

As an example: figuring out how much damage Galactica’s primary batteries with do to a fighter isn’t going to matter as the odds of being hit by them are small (unless being fired in Flak mode). For that a simple template can be used along with a base “to hit” number.

In the concept scenario I am building I am putting together both philosophy 1 and 2. A transport needs to be protected. The transport can easily be taken down by raiders, and therefore has a structure value of about 60. Galactica will be on the far side of the map as a supply / rally point for the Vipers. If Raiders venture too close, the CIWS system is essentially the same as Viper fire.

As the objective is for the raiders to take out the ‘sport, I suspect little attention will be paid to Galactica. We can assume that she is fighting an “off-map” Basestar and her flak field is firing the opposite direction. As part of a campaign I am coming up with a “mission cost” to highlight supplies being used (Fuel, Ammo, etc).

The vortex of gaming is starting to suck me in to this one as well! Put battlestars and basestars on the map that would be insanely fun!

I have found some Battlestar Galactica models here on a website called Starfightershipyards.com http://starfightershipyards.com/battlestar-galactica-models/

They also have civilian ships from the old Battlestar Galactica (Lorne Green) series in another section.

They have many other models but most of them seem too small to be compatible with the Ares game.

Has anyone messed around with assigning gunnery/attack points and/or defensive values to 'larger' ships of the Zoe Brain Cat 1 or Cat 2 variety? I would love to hear what folks have been using in games for including any larger ships into the mix. I recently finished my repaints of the SW:X-W Hound's Tooth and C-ROC cruiser and would like to use them on the table as Cat 1 of Cat 2 ships, and I don't mind trying to figure points out myself, but I thought others out there might already have experimented and wanted to touch base...

Even though the scales of BSG vs SW:X-W are different (1/160 vs 1/270), I think the smaller-larger X-Wing stuff will work on the table as more 'interactive' options rather than 'edge of the board' models. Here's the redone Hound's Tooth next to a Viper for comparison.

This website called Fantastic Plastic Models http://fantastic-plastic.com/index.html has pictures of models of weird aircraft, concept planes, experimental aircraft, actual spacecraft and fictional spacecraft. They used to make and sell some Battlestar Galactica models, if you look at the 'Retired Kits' section of their shop but they were expensive.

Actually, this one is nearly 10 inches; die cast metal; very heavy; £50 plus shipping.

I'd prefer a bigger, lighter, plastic kit type.

. . . now the elves are intrigued with the geometry! Would both the star and gal play well at around 36" - 40"? Max size for most tables. Do you play with altitude?

10.5" :p It's heavy but sits on the stand fairly well and easy to pick up with "the claw." I'll eventually make a square base and magnetize it I think. I caught it on an amazon sale $44 shipped.

Dittoes here! As well as other "Space" oriented games such as Star Trek miniatures game (FASA), Star Trek Attack Wing, Star Wars X-Wing, Full Thrust, Babylon 5 miniatures game, etc.

I've collected 5 more base stars, plus a couple of lighting kits for them, but with Ares scrapping the "old-style" Vipers and Raiders I'll probably sell them on. :(
