Hello!

Completely new to the WWII side of this forum. If this has been discussed before, I apologize. Tried a search and came up blank.

Has the Aichi D3A "Val" received any love in the form of cards or maneuver considerations in WGS? Noticed the Kate has been considered in the files. What deck would the Val fly with?

Thanks for tolerating a newbie!

Be well,

Nick

If you put Aichi D3A Val in our search engine (top right of page) you will discover quite a few postings as well as colors in a painting thread. It is an official mini from the original Nexus game release and a few of them are floating around on EBay, I have a dozen of them in my collection for my IJN Carriers collection . . .

I'm dumbstruck, David!

Thanks for the generous reply and the amazing photos! Did the Val release in the WoW: Dawn of WWII box? I'm trying to learn what's been released so far through Boardgamegeek and the like, but I'm a bit overwhelmed so far. Also haven't fully grasped everything the forum offers. So much information, so little time. :)

Appreciate you not flaming an easy newbie kill despite his obvious poor piloting skills on the forum... and appreciate the outstanding carrier project!

Best,

Nick

Some of us have been doing this a l o n g time. There is a great item in the files section that lists and illustrates all the different releases since the big bang, not sure but "complete listing" comes to mind, really worth a look through if you get some time. Each release is recorded and there are some check lists if you want to try to capture all the aircraft and game releases. Some of us have the entire collection tucked away, some even have a few items to spare for other collectors. The For Sale/Trade thread is also worth keeping an eye on . . . cheers!

The Aichi Val was in the Nexus 'Fire From the Skies' box, Nick. They use the I movement deck - the same one as the Ju.87 Stuka.

Your best bet as Clipper stated is in the for sale or trade section, but also continue looking on line you just never know your luck and also try Armaments in Miniatures they are sure to have one.

 Yes Nick, Alistair is correct & A I M do have the Val for only $5 US but you do have to paint it yourself.
I believe they have a selection of Decals for them as well.
Just "Google" Armaments in Miniature & you will find them. They have a big range of 200 scale WW2 aircraft in resin & they are excellent models.

This will take you right to the 1/200 scale planes:

Thanks a million to all! Armaments in Miniature looks incredible! Very much appreciate the tip!

I live near a fairly large metro area and the LGSs seem to have purged any WG product from their inventory. I was fortunate enough to get a Burning Drachens box from a friend to start into WGF, but it's looking difficult to start in WGS. Do you think Ares will reprint the WGS rules and accessories? Is there any other way to get an official start?

Thanks again for all the help!

I don't know how keen you are for official Nexus Vals Nick but a local shop here in Brisbane has three - one of each. They are AU$20 (about US$15). I would be happy to box them up and send them to you.

'Val's are still available all over the place - they just didn't sell as well as other minis, so a lot of places still have them.

Ludibay and Ludikbazar in France, probably Philibert too..........

They are often on ebay, and for a lot less than US$20 - at least., all mine were!

Ludikbazar has some at 7.50 eur.
Ludibay has some at 11.58 eur.

:D Nick the easiest way to get the Rules & all the damage chits etc at present is to buy the Battle of Britain Starter Set which also includes 2 Spitfires & 2 Messerschmidt 109's

You gents are amazing. :drinks:

I clearly need to prioritize my WGS budget before the squadron commander turns the aerodrome machine guns on me.

Barry, great advice. I'll go after a BoB starter. Can't go wrong with games bits, spits and schmidts. ;)

Peter, I'm concerned pieces of my wallet are going to be strung across several vendors.

Thanks a million to all for the great advice and leads! I'll likely PM some of you when I'm ready to jump at Vals.

Welcome dream, the WWII PTO is a lot of fun for me. I can't grab the ETO starter pack - i already have snuck in a few from there, but any more and I will cry. In this WWII section is a WW campaign scenario, you can read through our outings.

I will be doing some more missions in July.

Love the Kates, Barry!

I noticed that there's some interest on the forum to fly bombers in formation, sometimes on a modified single base. What's the general opinion on that approach for dive bombers and torpedo bombers? It seems like it fits the approach segment of the attack as the flights would make the most out of compact formations to defend themselves. Would group management still work after dive bombers made their attacks on targets or as torpedo bombers jinked away after a drop? What would be a good group size? Three? Four?

Thanks for the tip, Mischa! Looking forward to reading over the action reports!

Depends on how historically accurate you want to be, and how many minis you have!

USN Dauntless Squadrons had 18 planes, split into 3 sixes.
USN Devastator Squadrons seem to have been smaller, usually 15 planes.

IJN 'Val' and 'Kate' Squadrons had 27 planes, split into three Nines - each Nine could split into 3 Threes.
Later, they shrank to 18 planes, split into 2 Nines.

Thanks or that Tim, now the Question is do I get more Dauntles's?

I thought the answer to "should I get more (anything)" was always yes. :D

--

As for group size, the campaigns tend to use a loose 1 plane = a "group" concept. While we right them as 1 on 1 planes, it's "representing" a wing.

But yes, 3 planes tends to work well. But it may also be because they released 3 official versions of the mini's - so that's what most people have. The advantage to having bombers fly in formation using the same moves is it is a lot easy if you are playing both sides by yourself. I haven't gotten to the bombs & torpedoes really, but I believe I will have them fly AI until I choose to have them get in a firing position and then reform. Possibly "after launching a torpedo" break left and adjust speeds and turns accordingly until back in formation. Or it could be "fast left, then 2 straights to bug out!" and regroup much later!

I have multiple bombers and dive bombers (including 12 Stukas) but rarely would I have more than three on the table at once (plus escorts of course).

A number of people here have made bomber trays for formation flying. It works well, esp. for convention games. Check around the AARs for CappyTom and Teaticket.
