Day 2 of Briscon 2017 saw the WGF gear packed away and the table set for WGS missions. The theme would be 'Battle of Britain' and the first mission saw a Kette of Stukas escorted by a Schwarm of Messerschmitt Bf 109Es attack a convoy of merchantmen heading for an English Channel port.

222885

The Luftwaffe approaches the convoy ....

222884

.... while over the English coast two vics of RAF fighters form up to intercept.

222887

Flying for the Luftwaffe (left to right) was forum member Wayne (Whiskysierra) and Owen taking two 109s each, with yours truly running the Kette of Stukas.

222888

On the other side was an old work colleague of mine Mathew and his boys flying the Spitfires and Hurricanes. They would be joined in due course by another forum member Russell (Skippy) who added another Hurricane to the mix.

222889

It was not long before the Spits and 109s were exchanging shots, as was one of my Stukas while the other two made uninterrupted runs on the last two ships.

222890

By the time the Hurricanes arrived my first two Stukas were already making their vertical dives......

222891

..... and the Spitfires vic and 109 Schwarm had passed each other.

222892

One Stuka scores a direct hit on a steamer causing the ship to catch fire, while the other scores a partial hit. Both turn for home at altitude 3.

222893

My luck ran out for the third Stuka as Mathew's Spitfire caught him just as he was starting his vertical dive. The Stuka had already taken considerable damage from the other Spits and a Hurricane, but I could discard one damage chit due to my diving manoeuvre. Unfortunately for me either chit (B for guns + A for altitude advantage) caused enough damage to finish the Stuka, which failed to pull out of the vertical dive and crashed into the English Channel.

222905

Mat gets a trophy for bagging the Stuka!

222906

While my other two Ju 87 dive bombers open the throttles and head for home at low level Owen's pair of 109s swing in behind the Hurricanes. About now Owen had to go so I took over his 109s....

222907

.... just in time to see the dreaded 'BOOM' chit appear, sending a Hurricane down into the Channel.

222908

The Hurricanes try to intercept the dive bombers but the 109s are close by ready to pounce on any RAF fighters diving on the Stukas.

222909

In the end the RAF decided to trade blows with the 109s.....

222925

.... while my Stukas head for the French coast and home.

222927

One of my 109s downs a second Hurricane as the RAF fighters also break off their attack.

With the tally of two Hurricanes shot down, one ship sunk and a second damaged for the loss of one Ju87, the Luftwaffe came out clear winners in the first mission. After a break to clear the decks we would then set up for the second Battle of Britain mission - Airfield Attack!
