View Full Version : Group dynamics

After pondering over the B-17 bomber box concept and plotting my PTO Carrier wars projects, I am thinking we might want to consider group dynamics, a trio of fighters or torpedo bombers flying in a tight formation, flying literally as one up to a point in the game, then breaking off into individual attacks . . . I had some challenges in my early trials with just too many planes to manage at once.

Awkward :

Even more awkward :

Awkwardist! :

Seems someone had a joined base concept once, I liked it but did not pursue it at the time. Thinking also about a common base with three masts for three planes that could separate at a chosen time, but were flown to the that point as one "group". Am I crazy (my middle name) or is this a shared mental crisis? Just wondering . . . whoops! Wrong thread section! Some one please move me to where I belong . . .

I think you are on to something, Dave.
Even your "more awkward" would be a disaster for me to try to move without knocking them every which way.

We play a 1:700th Pacific game where 1 x 1:700th aircraft model represents a flight of anywhere up to 14 Aircraft. We whittle them down on paper and what get home is the number in the flight for the next sortie. It would be a nightmare to try it with individual aircraft as with 3 to 4 attacking flights and 1 or 2 CAP you could be handling
over 50 planes. Difficult without a lot of players involved.

David;
I made a formation movement tray back in '11, and posted the results here:

Since then, Keith made me a nice set, though they haven't been used yet :(
You should be able to use the concept for your own quite easily.

As a teenager, I helped organise a "Battle of the Philippine Sea" game in 1/700 at my local games convention.

3 aircraft carriers in line ahead, escorted by two battleshps, two cruisers and a ring of 9 destroyers, were attacked by 160 Japanese planes, each mounted on a cocktail stick.
The game was played on the floor, with ten players, and up to 70 USN fighters were launched/vectored in to meet the attackers!
It took both full days to play the attack; one carrier and one destroyer were sunk, several other ships damaged, and over 100 Japanese planes were shot down.

Fortunately, no one stepped on any ships!

David you are really onto something here - what an interesting discussion. Not only that but transferrable to all sections as well - WW1 / WW2 / Post WW2.

IMHO you are not in the wrong section: Maybe this was intended for WW2 but think again as to the transferability aspects and highlight examples using WW2 :minis: to relay the facts to us.

You also are not IMHO crazy just ground-breakingly adventurous at times! :)

I remember Ken or Tom using one for a 6 box formation of B17's at Origins last year. I might be wrong. Perhaps they or Keith could correct me if I am.

No, Tom used single bases. (I checked his albums).
It would be a nice way to mount a bomber box; you could also color-code the altitude on the base ;)

Ah with age the memory becomes befuddled. Or the eyes deceive Karl.
