View Full Version : Voting: WGS Bomber painting contest

Oberst Hajj

It's been a few years since we have done a painting contest here on the site and I'm happy to say we had a lot of great entries!

Below you will find all of the entries (in no particular order) into the WGS Bomber repaint contest. Some of the criteria you should look for when voting for your favorite 3 entries:

Smooth paint
Crisp lines between colors
Build quality (if it is a metal or resin kit)
Surface prep (if it is a Shapeways model)
The Devil is in the details, take time to look for the painted details
Unique subject, is it a pilot/plane that you have seen a lot of?

I also suggest you note your top picks and come back after a while and view them again before voting.

Good Luck everyone!

Nicely done for those I can see but 10 & 11 are not showing. Makes it a bit difficult to vote. I note that one or two others also had some pics not showing. I have tried leaving this post and viewing others, then coming back. I have even logged out completely and logged back in but no change.
Would love to cast my votes but really would like to compare all before I do. Any thoughts Guys?

The images for 10 and 11 should be fixed now. The reason they did not show up to some of you was because the members that submitted those entries did not follow the rules for uploading their images correctly :erk: They uploaded them to a Private album instead of a Profile album. A Private album only allows admin types and your Wingmen to see the images. A Profile album will hide the images from everyone, except for when the link to the image is posted (as in this thread).

I'll not type all the really bad words I had intended to type. Scrub my entry. It was never posted in a public or private album. It was always in a profile album, hence my asking Keith to check everything was ok when I first submitted it. I was told it was. Now I have been castigated by some of the members I withdraw my entry.

And to make sure it is my entry is number 10.

I feel your pain, old friend, since my entry is 11 and although my English command is obviously not as good as yours, I understood the rules properly and posted my pics in PROFILE album right from the start checking it twice. Then the lynch came. No matter. I am happy with my work no matter the result. And Ju got my vote.

Now I have been castigated by some of the members I withdraw my entry.

And to make sure it is my entry is number 10.

Not permitted I'm afraid. Your entry is far too good to delete it, and the rules make no provision for withdrawal of entry after voting has started. Sorry. And I feel you weren't castigated, but circumscribed ;)

Please put these difficulties, with pics not being available for whatever reason, under the "these things happen with complex systems" department. Deciding cause is only useful as part of the "how do we fix it" protocol. We're dealing with software that, while pretty good, is by no means bug-free, especially when it comes to graphics. We lost an awful lot of pictures in a hack attack a few years ago, pictures that in theory should have been recoverable.

Just because you - or I - make an album, set it to type "profile", doesn't mean it actually will register as that, 100% of the time. I think it will, and it usually does, but I can't guarantee it. After having been bitten by this, I now always check.

Summary: may I please request you reconsider? I'm sure the Oberst will change the rules to allow you to withdraw if you desire to exit, but I personally request that you don't. Both for you as a person, a member of the site, and an artist when it comes to crafting 1/200 aircraft, but also for the aircraft itself.

Teaticket
11-19-2015, 15:19
I agree with Zoe. Your work is too good to withdraw. A software glitch is just that. At work I am frustrated weekly with them but have to live with it...or change my job!

I don't think you were castigated, more likely some ribbing from colleagues. Please stay in the contest.

Hedeby
11-19-2015, 15:35
Beautiful job Neil...It has to stay.
What no one seems to have grasped was that the answer all along should have been "have you tried turning it off and on again"?
Mind you I have failed dreadfully every time I have tried to upload a file.
I will stick to more journalistic endeavours and leave the artists to do what they do so well.

I'm very sorry that there was an issue with your images displaying incorrectly. I'm not sure what caused your albums to show as Profile to you but Private to everyone else. If either of you turely have grievances about this, please PM me and we'll sort it out as friends.

Whoa! Where did that one come from? No-one was castigating you Neil (or Andy). A little light-hearted ribbing at worst (evidenced by smiley/wink-wink emoticons).

In fact rather than wanting to nobble 2 of the entries, at the same time Keith was fixing the problem yesterday I had copied the 10 & 11 pics to an album and then re-posted them here in the hope everyone could see them. I see the post disappeared soon after, and I am assuming it got deleted by Keith have got things sorted.

Now I have been castigated by some of the members I withdraw my entry.

And to make sure it is my entry is number 10.

neil i do hope you dont remove your wonderful entry:pray:. i dont think anyone intended any serious rebuke.;) i think it was all in jest. perhaps they imbibed a bit too many spirits and it got the better of them and they let slip an unbidden tongue. :drinks::FOK::drunk: surely they will pay enough of a penalty when dawns early light shows itself.:puke::crash::crashB: please reconsider it:hatsoff:

I'm glad to say I waited for all entries to appear on the post before I voted. I don't think I could, in good conscience, have voted if I had not seen all entries.
And to Hedeby; turning off and turning on again was the FIRST thing I tried but that didn't work either.
Once again my compliments to all the entrants.

Does this sort of thing happen every year in this contest? I'm saddened by the direction things appear to have gone in ... Hope that all entrants who put in the time and hard work to produce all 13 entries this year stay in the competition.

By all means it could just be me but the memories of how a brand new event I was organising just descended into chaos are still close to home round here.

Andy - :sAprvd: Well Said Sir :salute: about your last comment. But all this is still making me think twice about trying to organise another event or enter a future competition :hmm:

When I voted for my three choices, I was able to see all of the entries - the initial posting that was disrupted (which Keith identified and asked us to bear with) didn't last too long, and when I went to the thread to look at entries, all of them were visible.

It's a shame there was some misunderstanding with which 'file' to put them in - I probably would have done this incorrectly if I had finished my entry in time:p

ANYWAY, I'm glad things got sorted out and all entrants are back in the fold - once again, I'm in awe of the lovely modelling skills on display in this contest. So many wonderful planes to consider...

All the best,
Matt

I've seen carefully all the 13 entries before I voted. I immediately dismissed one of them (the poor creature doesn't really know what he's doing), but he took it gracefully.

The other twelve entries are amazing works of art. Thank you for letting me compete with all of you, dear sirs!

I have both. I sometimes over-compensate. I do know my work in this comp is not as good as many others, but I also think it's not the least best, and they're all good to superb. However, I'm not the best judge of that - others are. Even if I get 0 votes - a distinct possibility due to the subject - the model looks good in practice.

The important things are 1) To Have Fun and then 2) To improve. That last only comes from practice and observing what others have done, and trying to emulate it or even improve on it.

Clipper1801's PB4Y-2 "Tortilla Flat" Baldy and black joe's PIAGGIO P 108 were just to close for everyone to decide upon!

Great job everyone that entered and a personal thank you to each of you for making this contest a success! :salute:

For the first time in any competition, there was an aircraft model that I couldn't find even the smallest flaw in. As close to perfection as it's possible to get. Congrats to guntruck on his Greif.

For second, the amount of work in making the support struts, the subtle conversion of the Ju88 rudder, the extreme conversion of an Fw190D to an A, and the paint job on the whole thing secured the #2 spot for the Mistel.

Third was hard. In terms of painting difficulty, the Piaggio scored extra points. The Ju52 scored extra for the conversion. The He111 subtle paint scheme was brilliant. The Edelweiss Ju88 paint scheme likewise.

In terms of subject, the B-25 was excellent, but I think the decision to enter what is widely regarded as the ugliest bomber of WWII, the Amiot 143M, was...courageous. The best thing you can say was that it had character, and the model captured the original's grotesque appearance adequately.

I would broaden the 'how-to' request to everyone involved! There really was a bunch of outstanding planes, all of which I'm sure involve details of completion that could benefit all of us...:)

I like your idea of the top three having flight bases made up for them, Keith! That would certainly encourage others to emulate the winners!

As my fist experience with a competition (albeit only voting...) I have to say this was wonderful. I look forward to the next round...

A note of caution regarding flight bases - you need to consider the demand for these bases, in terms of the availability of the models and demand from the members. Keith after all needs to make a profit from making these available. Certainly as far as the He 177 is concerned, I have the software to produce a base, all I need is the time to do it. I have had conversations with Keith about producing designs for bases, and hopefully next year I will have time to offer some bases for aircraft other than the standard WoG planes.

Matt, I hope you will be able to put up a plane for the next competition.

Thank you kindly Zoe. I couldn't agree with you more about the Mistel - brilliant. And yes the description of the conversion was inspiring. If I had done this I would not have thought of doing it as two separate aircraft, or rather two aircraft that could be separated. As soon as I saw it I wanted to find out how the warhead was created. Excellent work by Carlo. Yes, I voted for the Piaggio for the same reason mentioned. Have to say, if you had entered your B29 it would have given us all a run for our money.

Oh, it's prettier all right, and the cockpit detail worked. But while anyone can make a B-29A look reasonably nice, trying to make an Amiot 143M look like something that should fly, rather than being so ugly the ground rejects it, that's a challenge. Especially since in May 1940, the paint was starting to wear off a bit, something I tried to duplicate. Same with the rather hit-or-miss 3 colour cammo that had only been put on with whatever tools were available just 6 months earlier.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=180670&d=1447026838
http://ww2aircraft.net/forum/attachments/aircraft-pictures/192833d1326559321t-captured-aircrafts-germany-a143-31-jpg

p.s. getting that stylised AA Amiot logo on the tail right was... non-trivial. But worth it.

Now if only I had your skill in outlining control surfaces, not to say the crispest vermiform cammo I've ever seen...
