I know it is not WWI aviation related but it does fall under the Historical WWI category.

Today October 8th, 2010 is the 92nd anniversary of Corporal Alvin York's actions which led to him being awarded the Distinguished Service Cross which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Follow this link for some of the details behind York's actions.

A local hero from the hills of Tennessee!

After the war, he turned down a number of offers to be used for promotional activities, advertisements, etc. His humility and personal convictions where as admirable has his heroic actions in combat.

Very inspiring Ryan. You can be proud of your fellow Americans, especially the ones who are still calling out the battlecry of freedom in other conflicts at the moment.

Thanks for pointing that out Rob. Over the last 9 years, both our countries and many other of our allies have seen some tremendous heroism and valor fighting, as you so aptly put it, for freedom. Just a few days ago, Staff Sgt. Robert Miller's family recieved the Medal of Honor posthumously for their sons bravery, courage, and sacrifice so that others may live. The official report is long but worth the read, Miller fought to the last bullet and grenade. Another great and inspiring story found here:
