Thanks Daniel for starting this thread. I have an idea to share with all the participants - to make our Con again a very special and unique. Details will follow soon...;)

Let me throw the rough idea of the next Convention.
Campaigns and careers.
Briefly:
1. Two tables/wars (WGF/WGS).
2. Each participant decides to start a career in WGF OR WGS: but the players shall be devided more or less evenly between the two, so the enlistment must be run carefully.
3. Theatres: In WGF there is not a problem, in WGS: it may be decided by voting: BoB or Pacific as the most popular and common (planes!).
4. Missions: Easy, easy and again easy. Let's put aside the special missions with house/special rules. Stick to RAPs and standarize the missions. It will shorten the briefing time and extend the playing fun. I mean: there may be a fixed set of missions: (e.g. fighter sweep, recon, bombing, balloon busting) which may be selected in order or randomly or even swapping sides each time!.
5. Careers: from rookies arriving at the front, through veterans to aces.

Your thoughts?

In case no one wants to make a carreer as a bomber pilot;) there is a solution: bombers shall fly or straight or be driven by official "automatic movement rules". A piece of cake.

Worth of trying.

Only downside I can see, is strict choosing. If one decides to fly WW1, one won't fly WW2 during con, if I understood you right.
If so, I suggest to divide days:
Friday and Sunday for WW1 - 2 x 2 minor scenarios and 1 main.
Saturday for WW2 - 2 (or perhaps 3) x 2 minor scenarios and 1 main.

When I say main scenario, I have in mind big battles, with all participants available.

This would allow everybody to play both wars, without making tough choice which one they like better.

Btw, do we have a theme for next repainting competition?

It was Michal's to decide what's next year's repaint contest theme will be.

To include a campaign would be nice, but I would propose four out of the five games at Saturday for it. So we have a core of campaign missions.

So four WW I and parable four WW II missions.

For example:

If your pilot survives the first (or one mission) he is a veteran at the second mission (+ lucky git) if he survives the second one, he is an ace for the third mission (lucky git + ace ability).

If you're shot down we simply use a damage deck to determine if you survieved or not.

Escape from the battlefield means no resurecction for this mission.

...and so on.

Changing between WW I & WW II should be possible, you simply have to start with a new pilot.

This saves us the famous and individual introduction games at Friday, the big mission at Saturday evening and the final missions at Sunday. We need space for game ideas and new mission concepts beside a campaign.

Of coure we need to vote for a campaign scenario for WW I and WW II.

Westfront or Italian front for WW I

Pacific, BoB, Europe, North Africa or Eastern Front (with Balkans) for WW II, etc...

This would mean that I would not be motivated to come to the con at all, since Saturday, the most important gaming day, would be of no interest to me whatsoever.

Of course there will be a full WW I programm at saturday and we're always looking for Czech pilots that volunteer to fly the big babies (ZEPPELIN STAAKEN!!! / HANDLEY PAGE O/400).

You are right! I always expect everybody to play both wars, and that's isn't always true. Some other system would be better, then.

Day 1
WW2: 2 parallel minor missions
WW1: 2 parallel minor missions

Day 2
WW2: 2 parallel minor missions
WW1: minor mission AND WW2: minor mission
WW2: major mission
WW1: 1 major mission

Day 3
WW1: 2 parallel minor missions

WW1 campaign ends in 3 days with minor mission,
WW2 campaign ends in 2 days (no WW2 on Day 3) with major mission.

This way both wars have even number of games, and player will have to choose the war only once, in day 2 (if one wants to play both wars). Of course, players would still have to choose between two missions at the same time, but that shouldn't be a problem.

We discussed about duration of (common, not evening "gold") Con Missions on our last gaming session. They were 120 minutes long during last two Cons (2014 & 2015).

What do you think about this time (120 minutes)? Is it enough for common mission?
(consider the explanation of the rules, but not the preparation of the playing area)

What about 30 minutes long breaks? Is it enough for break between two missions? Even for Game Masters?
(break for lunch is at least 60 minutes)

Feel free to discuss even if you never attended Prague Summer Con.

I found the organization of the Summer Con excellent.

120 min. are enough time to play a standard mission. The more players the more time we need, especially the last missions of Friday and Saturday*.

09:30 am for the start at Saturday is ok, but there should be an extra 30 min time window at noon for GMs and participants that that arrive a little bit later. ;)

I think I can speak for the German participants, that we only need a breakfast and some snacks between the missions. Leaves more room for Czech beer in the stomach.

I had 11 beers on Friday, Markus 13 and Mario 14 during the whole day! :drunk:

*The GM of those final missions need support for setup and maybe more time organize. He should name beside this some deputies for executing collisions and shooting.

We arrived too late at Saturday morning (missed train No.22 for seconds) and started 30 minutes later.

I had the feeling that we carried this delay into the noon brake.

Dan-Sam
07-07-2015, 07:47
True, true, Sven. But we can not do anything with late arrives. Just say clearly: You must be here at time T, because we will start at this time and no latecommers can join missions

I will post a few pics of the SoG game on the Anchorage tomorrow if time permits.

Someone took a photo, can't remember who. I expect it'll appear sometime soon (although I'm dreading it, wasn't looking or feeling my best this weekend!)

Anyway, I won the Davy Jones award for losing the first ship of the game (this was the "fleet action" on the Saturday), but forced three enemy ships to strike with my second ship and won the game - for which my prize was a model of HMS Impétueux, which just happened to be the same ship I was driving in the game :)

David - you looked fine although I remember you mentioned being on the Lemsips. I always dread seeing photos of me looking fat but so far the photos I have seen have been great. Glad that SoG game restored your faith in the game as it looked fun. You got the Davy Jones Award as I was busy picking up the Bullseye Award on the next table! (Hope you are feeling a lot better now BTW.)

@Karl and Barney: :D Sven and his German mates are a little bit harmed by the language environment dominating in Prague :) - I do not know if you are aware of that. Although the official language there is English, the majority of the players: Czechs, Poles and Serbians could speak their own languages and understand themselves more or less which is super fantastic. We usually compare words in those three languages for common terms which is a nice play!

1. No, there was no trouble with the translations at all, Barney:D. It was nice of you!

Andy - thank you for that advice. ...

Hey - Karl - Barnaby - you both are on the complete false track. :smack:

This year I arrived with two German comrades at Prague and we had a lot of fun.

Czech, Polish, Serbian - wonderful languages and I really try to pronounce some basic words right.

...and I'm shure the other Con members listen carefully to the German sentences we spoke during the games.

Prague is an exceptional experience and English the way to communicate the details.

Remember we had Andrea and his familiy there and Italian was heard too during the Con.

Jelena is a special case.

When Jelena and I are in the same sector on the table, or better on the same side, we really try to communicate, but her English is a good as my Serbian. But we have always a lot of of fun and Nemesis, - excuse me, Nemanja is always ready to translate. ;)

I am quietly but seriously thinking about coming along to Prague 2016 because this year looked like great fun and as Andy says it is a great city to visit anyway. Is Ufleku still there by any chance? It's a very long time since I visited Prague on a school trip back in 1990.

Now I see the issue. I did not mean "harm" as touched or so (no reason for that), rather - as "singled out" if that is the right meaning:).

As Sven wrote we also pick up some German aircombat terms which are more than appropriate during most of the games.
Different languages provide additional fun to the games, that is obvious.

Phillip I am seriously liking those photos of yours! :)

I actually think that a WW1 / WGF versus Sails situation would work better overall than trying WW2 v Sails like in that picture I posted. WW2 involves too much speed and too many game-kill potentials. Whereas without these adverse factors WW1 v Sails would be so much more game and more rewarding having begun as such a unique idea.

I always knew that Wings of War / Glory was a versatile wargame compared with others I have known but the Avro Vulcan business with WGS really did teach me never to say never about it. So I reckon this could actually be done: It does IMHO need an expert in both games (I have not played Sails yet but believe that where there is a will there is a way) to look at this situation and think creatively about it ...

In spite of the dates, do we have a general idea of the event?
WGF and WGS campaigns? [My vote!]

Marechallannes
09-30-2015, 05:55
... I would propose four out of the five games at Saturday for it. So we have a core of campaign missions.

So 4 WW I and parable 4 WW II missions.

Of course we need to vote for a campaign scenario for WW I and WW II.

Westfront or Italian front for WW I

Pacific, BoB, Europe, North Africa or Eastern Front (with Balkans) for WW II, etc...

I quote myself. ;)

The choice for one sceanrio safes transport capacities.

We can discuss it - it is not an easy question.

I see two major problems:

You will probably play only with half of participants (no games with Sven, for example).
May be there will much bigger group for WGF or WGS and we will have to resolve this problem on the stage.

...

You will probably play only with half of participants (no games with Sven, for example).the stage.

Good point Daniel, but I general I have to say, that I'm a servant of the Summer Con.

So I have no problem to organize sidematches like SoG, manage AI planes, only host a mission or participate in a game were pilots are needed, no matter what theater or WW.

I know this costs kills and victory points, but a I'm happy in the first if the participants have max. fun. :)

If there's a chance to jump into a game, like at my nightbombing mission last year, when I managed the AI bombers and played one nightfighter - I grab it, but if it makes more sense to only host a mission, like at Caproni's revenge with 8 players and altitude rules - it's ok, too.

Question is, what kind of idea about a campaign everybody has?

Is it a pilot based campaign (a pilot goes throug random missions and if he survives he gets a bonus) or is it sceanrio based campaing (one theater - starts at early war and ends at late war)?

I think it depends on the proposed missions, too. Maybe we get enough scenario ideas that can be sorted like a campaign.

Some missions can't be included into a campaign like coop mission when all games fight on the same side. (FWs versus a B17 Bomber box for example).

Next question is the duration of a campaign. To strech it over the whole Summer Con seem impractical to me.

I don't want that anyone has to sacrify his Summer Con sceanrio idea for the campaign - for myself I have no problem to develop and host one campaign mission (WW I or WW II)

I repent too much bringing family to sightseeing instead than playing, last time...
I have some little campaign stuff that could produce a quick row of missions, often with a defense side that do not know exactly what the attacker is there for. If anybody will decide to go deeper into that and organize a micro-campaign, please contact me privately and we can exchange a few ideas.

Would it disturb the Campaign, if I were to miss some sessions to take Eileen out sightseeing?
It was my intention to play in some games but not all of them.

A multitude of aircraft kit shops sounds good enough to me ... Makes up for the time I will not be spending at Ufleku! (Cannot drink any more and anyway the last time I was there I was 18!)

Have not asked the Lady Wife if she is up for a spot of sightseeing - I'm more concerned about making sightseeing trips between games and getting lost / missing out when we are supposed to be playing. Therefore we might add an extra day on to our trip for this purpose allowing us to concentrate and focus on playing throughout the event.

PS - Ufleku is / was a famous beer kellar in Prague - I think it still exists and if you do drink it's worth a try :)

Dan-Sam
10-02-2015, 10:43
Yes, Barney, this fine pub still exist ;)

Sightseeing: I have two recommendations - we will probably end the Con at Sunday, 12:00. Afternoon should be fine for it. And the second: Old Town and Mala Strana are full of people during the day. The best time for Astronomy clock, Charles bridge and the Castle is late evening or deep night. Believe me...

A cunning plan me thinks, the women shop & sightsee whilst the boys indulge in their passion!

We're gaming too, this night.

19:30 h starts a Twilight Imperium 3rd edition game with the Lazax Option.

6 players.

For Summer Con I have a first sceanrio idea called: Repaint battle.

It's a WGF dogfight mission with the Flying Circus (Fokker Dr.I only) versus a RAF/RNAS squadron (Sopwith Camels or Sopwith Triplanes only).

Altitude rules (level 1 - 5), aim from above, the Circus starts 1 level higher (Hun from the Sun), ressurection yes - but only for 3 planes each side, and a special rule - I you fly with a repaint you can ignore the first gun jam.

For my planed SoG games I had the idea to involve the games partial into the Summer Con scoreboard (winning side etc.), so that the participants have no disadvantage. Just an idea.

Have fun in Prague tonight my friends. :salute:

About campaign, I strongly support it, so I'll re-post some of my thoughts from page 1.

Day 1 (Friday)
WW2: 2 parallel minor missions
WW1: 2 parallel minor missions

Day 2 (Saturday)
WW2: 2 parallel minor missions
WW1: minor mission AND WW2: minor mission
WW2: major mission
WW1: 1 major mission

Day 3 (Sunday)
WW1: 2 parallel minor missions

This way both wars have equal number of games, and player will have to choose the war only once, in day 2 (if one wants to play both wars).

Player would still have to choose between missions (but not between wars), nevertheless. But this already happened.

Quite probably.

I took part in a big hunt of two B-17 with a pack of Fw.190D and it has been both fun and effective, anyway.

I also repainted a P-38 with the colors of Regia Aeronautica for that purpose. Colonnello Angelo Tondi shot down two B-17s on it, in late August/early September 1943.

I want to know, especially from Sven, Paul, Honza and Rafal, if there is a possibility to join us despite the red field in the poll.

I promised an idea and here it is:

We are discussing here a campaign system for Prague Con very often. I like the idea, but I see some difficulties in having campaing for both games (WGF and WGS). So why not play campaign only for WGF? The table with WGS can stay with free mode, people can flow from one to another and only for WGF there will be a career system in KotA way. We will have 4 normal +1 big missions (2x1916; 2x1617 and 1x1918) and play as we want. Who do not like it, can just change the table for WGS or play without without caring about career points. What do you think?

Kubajs, did I forget something?

Sounds like a Campaign Saturday.

A few ideas:

You'll need a plan if the campaign volunteers would fill two tables (remember the run on Easy Zeppelin)
Mission should be designed to 6 -10 players max.
We need a stock of planes.
If it's a KotA campaign the result of mission 1 should influence mission 2 (lost the mission - you're the defender for example)
Each mission should have a limited choice and number of plane types to aviod for example that all Germans start with a Fokker D.VII (something like max. 2 Fokker D.VII & min. 1 Fokker Dr.I)
etc...

At all - interesting idea.

Combine this with your great assesment system from the last Con and we'll have a lot of fun.

I will try to answer:

May be you are true. Hope we can work with it - GM is an XO for his mission, he will be always right. The system can not cover every eventuality, we must talk about special missions like Easy Zeppelin.
I don't know how many players join the Con in this moment. That will be important for mission options. I can imagine missions for 8-14 players. We will see.
I think my + Kubajs's + Bumblebee's + Láďa's + Andrzej's collections will be enough. By the way, there is much easier parking near new Con place.
There is no special need to play KotA missions, because in that moment we can't create our own missions (for me, GM mission parade is an important part of Con). So we plan to use KotA point and ace system, but not missions.. Every GM will create a mission due Con task.
Number of planes and types is on GM. It must accord only to war year, rest is on him.
Etc.

Is it clearer? Just ask, I am here ;)

The Flight will be on maneuver this Saturday, so I will probably know. But the pilots were informed initially about the probable April date and there was no objection (of course;)).

I asked, because Rafal has a problem with his children school examination month. I wonder there could be a similar situation in case of your buddies. Of course - much (Polish) players, much fun

After consultation with Láďa, the store owner (thank you, Kubajs), the winner is:

22nd - 24th April 2016

Now, I need:

Write a confirmation here who counts with participation.
Write a confirmation here who is thinking about hotel MARS.

:serious:

For the date: Count me in.

For hotel Mars: I'll talk to the Zirndorf Wing today.

Daniel, I think you can count Markus and Mario in.

I have to talk with 3 other flight members.

I see one of them November 5th the first time because he's on a vacation at the moment.

So I can't see anything about a reservation and maybe they prefer the Botel again.

Yes, although we arrive on Monday and depart the following Monday. Plenty of time to sight see and Saturday for gaming as the wives shop!

Daniel some nice places to see around Prague itself and best way to get around Prague. If by tram is there a day ticket or week ticket you can buy that is cheaper in the log run.

The best way how to visit Prague is...lost in it. Forget about taxis, catch a tram (public transportation system works very well here and you can buy x-day ticket [I will check possibilities for you]) and raise your eyes from streets to the sky and roofs of old houses.
From places around Prague, I recommend google Kutna Hora - a medieval city with two cathedral a and long history of mining silver. It is only about an hour by train and you can rest there the whole day ;)

Paris Street?

Yeah, with Prikopy street are most luxury (and expensive) streets in Prague. Keep you honey away from shops there :serious:

I fully agree with Daniel about loosing yourself in Prague. I lost myself with friends in Prague one night in 1985 in Mala Strana. That was one of the best nights of my life. I swear.

Con will start around 16:00 h (4 pm) at Friday. A warmup before Saturday and a first welcome beer in a pub should be mandatory.
