The following is the background and mission report from a young pilot's first solo flight.....hope you all enjoy
It is 5am first light,
Pilot officer Maverick is waiting out side the Wing Co’s office
What the heck is this all about?
Called out of my bunk less than twenty minutes ago,
So what’s on?
The Wing Co opens the door, and now to find out what is going on….
‘Young Maverick’,
Word has it that the Hun are massing behind the front line for a big push and we have been
tasked to get accurate photographic information.
Two days ago Flt Lt Heddington-Smythe went out on the photographic mission and failed to return,
Yesterday Flt Lt Loxley suffered the same fate.
From reports received it appears the Red Baron is out hunting!
This is a nightmare for all of us, we are supporting bombing raids and we can’t spare any pilots,
frankly this photo operation is an extra task we could well do with out.
Maverick, it is your task to get the photo information, I have no other pilot to be your wing man.
Maverick your name befits you, if you see the Red Baron run for home, do not take the challenge,
I have no wingman for you, and with what is coming toward us, I need you back here !

As the door shuts I hear the Wing Co mutter.....'I hope to god he listen's to me'!

The sun rises its a beautifully clear sky, this should be a one hour sortie and if the Wing Co
thinks I am going to take flight from the Red Baron should he come a calling…....
It’s fifteen minutes into the flight,
all is clear and the front is no more than five minutes flying time away,
but what is that glinting in the sun at my three o’clock,
it cant be, can it?

The Red Baron,
if I turn and run we are none the wiser as to what the Hun is doing,
So let’s see what’s your plan, what have you got for me then Baron?

He's heading straight for me....guns blazing in both directions....
If he thinks I am a chicken he can think again!

He has chopped up my wing edge pretty badly...but he's heading away
hitting his guns...they are jammed!
Must get back into him quickly.....

My God he's going down, I got him....I don't believe it......I got him...

Now I had better get those photos and get the hell out of here....!
I shot down the Red Baron…..!
But who’s going to believe me?
And what will the Wing Co say………

Later That day,………….back at the Aerodrome, in the Wing Co’s office;
‘Maverick’ you deliberately disobeyed my orders….
Reports from the front line and a balloon observer both corroborate...
I specifically gave you order's..….
If you see the Red Baron Run for home,
My god man you deliberately defy me!
You are either very lucky or very good,
You get the photo’s and the Red Baron.
As I said previously Your name befits you.
Now get your self off to the mess and buy everyone a beer,
That's an order, and don't disobey this one!
Your lucky I don't court martial you for disobeying a direct order!

News is the Red Baron got out safely, so he lives to fight another day......damn him.
Some reward,
I get the photo's and the Red Baron and I get my back side kicked hard into the bargain....
and a very large mess bill....

A lot of luck,
No matter which way the Red Baron turned I managed to chose the right way to follow,
banking left and right each phase, staying on his tail for three turns, shooting all the way.......!
and all over in five game turns....
A lot of fun,
My 23 year old son is now a Wings of Glory addict as well !
No doubt he will return as the Red Baron some time soon wanting a rematch!
