Based on the Fire in the Skies Campaign here, my son and I will run our own campaign. Our allied squadron will jump back forth against and ETO & PTO axis squadron (reduced in size, as the allies will fly more often.)

I started to take pictures and then got into the game and got tried of fighting the glare from where I sat. So what follows is our quick attempt at Scenario 1 - Raid on airfield AND following that is Scenario 1A (Recon of the airfield): a simple out and back test run for a new Experimental model WWII plane.

The Allied Pilots few in from the East, at daybreak on the small Japanese airfield. They used the sun as cover. They were an experienced duo; Capt Hill flew his P40 today, while Lt McWorter was in his own Wildcat (the real pilots of our planes are our Aces & Vets, they were randomly rolled to see who flew the planes we had selected and of the 12, we got our own pilots).

A lone Zero was practicing night flights, as daybreak broke and he saw the incoming planes.

156683

Lt McWorter made a wide turn to the right to try and get angle to come straight down the runway and strafe the idle planes. Capt Hill went straight for the planes, he didn't see the AA gun until Flak exploded near him, but there was no damage. He quickly silences the gun and begins to turn towards the Zero. Lt McWorther is already shooting up the tarmac.
156684

Hill ignores the Zero in fact and aims for the idle plane on the ground, but the Zero doesn't ignore him and the guns cut into the side of his plane.

156685

A vicious dogfight ensues, as Hill performs and Immel, as does the Zero, while Mcworter explodes one plane on the ground and heavily shoots up a second. As Hill's P40 & the Zero dance in the air, Hill is able to avoid additional damage but evens the score overall, hitting the Zero solidly. (This is where some pics didn't come out). McWorter Immeled, and made another pass up the landing strip at the parked planes. A second plane on the ground erupted in flames, destroyed, but the ground crews had removed two from the airfield (1 was damaged but less than 50%, so probably recoverable).

Unfortunately, as events unfolded, the Zero wound up on the tail of McWorter after he destroyed the second ground plane and he felt the hits rip into his Wildcat.

He tried to run but the Zero followed, and while Hill Immeled the others raced away in the opposite direction. McWorter's plane was barely staying together, and he couldn't shake the Zero. As Hill finally started to catch up, the Zero pilot figuring that McWorter's plane was going to fall out of the sky itself, begin to turn to face the enemy approaching at it's own rear. (In reality, William got his plane to safety by flying off the board, now the Zero is making a sharp turn in one corner of the map and straddles the line, but stays inbound). Hill misjudges the angle and tries to turn too sharply. He gets off a salvo at the Zero, but it is now flying perpindicular to him, so he decides to escort McWorter back to base. (I didn't make the turn and flew off as well).

Our planes were damaged, but we flew away.

156687

The allies had destroyed 2 planes on the ground and one AA gun, but they had let 2 escape.

156688

The Zero itself was happy to have Hill break off, as he was barely flying himself. (We had reduced it's HP to 14).

============
The previous day, an experimental bomber was flown out on a recon mission of this very airfield, before McWorter & Hill were sent in.
On this day a Ki-62, "Tony" was flying CAP and raced to intercept the new bomber. He didn't spot it until later and was late to the chase.

The infantry dug on to keep ground forces away were no match for the Experimental's planes guns.

156692

After a quick pass, the bomber/fighter had taken it's pictures and turned and the Tony had managed to work itself into a perfect firing position!

156693

The bomber survived, but the Tony anticipating a turn, ended up behind the bomber/fighter and in it's lethal rear gunner's sights. As the plane flew to safety, it fired again at the poor Tony who's plane couldn't handle the conflict any more and the pilot had to bail out. He was wounded and will miss 2 scenario's.
