Just ordered both Balloon Buster balloons and have realised I don't know if they're metal like the range of aeroplanes or expanded foam like many of the non Wings of War ones seem to be. Can anyone tell me please? Thanks!

I'd say that the ballon involucre is plastic. The ropes too.

They're made of the same hard plastic that the official Wings of War minis are made of.

The thickness of the envelope is perhaps rather subtle but remains absolutely rigid. The ropes are of hard plastic and really rigid.

However, a good buy considering also the remaining contents of the box (Nieuport minis, airplanes and aa machine guns cards, ...)

Here is a link for a Fesselballoon - Drachen style. Great model. Here is mine nearly complete with paint. Just put the basket on it and hope to have the decals on next.

And here it is with the color nearly complete. This will be a German balloon. I think I will probably get another one of these.

Great paint job. What is your secret?

Looks like Rod gives it a wash of brown ink or similar. I'd usually wash and then drybrush some highlights, but this balloon looks good as it is.

Must be why it says brown ink on the pot then:o

Well I have to say that this was a new experience for me. I am still learning how to paint things, so I started with a chestnut brown and various glazes of various browns. The ink helped, as did GW badab black, and devlin mud. There was a bit of dry brushing but it was to add variation and then washed over with the washes. Now to get the flipping decals in place!

Thanks for the feed back.

Thank you for sharing that with us. I'm just about to start painting the Skytrex one, so will follow your lead, as it looks much better than my last attempt did. I must remember to use those ink washes more often.

Brian - what base colors did you use for those. They are awesome. Also love the game mat!

The base color is a mix of a dull yellow, with a little brown thrown in. After the base coat, I did a wet wash with black.

I've just received an email that my balloon is on the way!
I think I'll name her Mrs Kravitz! ;)

Outstanding paintjob... I had forgotten how effective the GW inks can be... looks like I will be picking up a few the next time I am at the FLGS. The very first time I saw the picture I could have sworn that the balloon was made out of baseball glove leather! :D

When my balloon arrived, of course I ripped the box open, gave it a quick soapy wash and started filing down the rough bits... we had company due an hour later. So, the wife catches sight of it and says i have to hide it away, it looks like a dooody... I do admit, she was kinda right.. Well! wait until I build it (i thought) !!! Sigh, it now looks like a thingy, i have to keep my Drachen in the closet....

Brian,

In the pictures, at the back on the print-outs, is a device that looks like the top of a turkey baster with some surgical tubing attached to it. I was curious as to what (in your modeling) you used it for, if at all? I am always looking for nifty gadgets to make things easier...

The Germans had a name for it you know. So your observation of a balloon is about right.

That odd item is in Rod's (aka Ritterton) Pics, not mine.

I think F.O. Kyte is referring to the nickname mentioned in the first paragraph of this article: http://wwiaviation.com/Balloons.html

All I know is that the ballons are cool and the pick are great. Nothing else.
