"And Lancasters are..."
"Im sorry?"
"You mentioned Lancasters. What are these?"
"Oh yes. Lancasters are bombers. British ones. 4 engines and some 5 guns if my memory is still working. When my commander said we were going to clash woth bombers I tough we were going to attack a bomber formation. My group was. But not me. While the Lancasters went up to bomb our ships they sent me to scort a Stuka formation to bomb their airfield. Fair enough. I missed the fun. Well little of it...
146333
We were three. Two Stukas and me, one of them Italian.
146334
I knew him very good. Capitano Andrea Dorasio and his gunner Giorgio Veronesi. Good people. He knew how to fly with a Stuka. When he did that plane was like an angel.
The other Stuka was handled by the "Newbie" Marcus von Voss and his gunner Hermann Räll. Newbie because he just arrived our airfield and was his first mission over there. But his Stuka gained a lot of experience in Europe.
When we got to the Lancaster base all was quiet. Quite strange. But then I breaked in the radio:
Two points right above the airstrip. Enemy planes certainly.
Marcus said:
Get them. We are getting the strip.
But Giorgio interrupted:
Wait! Theres a Lanc down there!
I said:
Go get him! Hes priority then.
146335
The enemy fighters were already on us. And worse. In perfect synchrony.
146336
They were two, as already said. One beautiful Martlet and one Dewoitine D.520.
Hermann said in the radio showing some nervousness:
Oh. British and French. Great. Some of the braver pilots in Europe.
And I shared his nervousness:
That french friend is an ace. Look at all his markings! And we got heavy AA in the ground.
They got in the Stukas as main target. Their bullets penetrated the Italian incredibly.
146337
So we gave them hell.
146338
The french plane passed so fast in my front that i could not even see it. I was so confused that i crashed with the Italian Stuka damaging his rudder but giving no worries to my plane.
146339
But I could see the Martlet perfectly.
146340
My bullets hit everything in that Britishman, his cockpit, his engine and his fuselage.
146341
Meanwhile, the D.520 was chasing Giorgio...
146342
... and I was shoting the F4F down.
146343
146344
But positioning was hard for the bombers, the old Dewoitine chasing them.
146345
It was incredible. While shoting the Italians, the enemy plane maintened positiong in the blind spot of the Germans.
The angel could not resist.
146346
146347
Hes an ace...
I said weakly, not believing my eyes. So I put the engine to work.
146348

But the mission had to continue, and my german friend were now targets.
But right before droping his bomb, Marcus tried a dead shot on the D.520.
146349
The bomb hit the wing. Perfectly.
Meanwhile, I was trying to get to the combat and the French ace made a reverse.
146350
146351
I was trying so hard but the plane seemed to stop in the air.

Note that the Heavy AA at that time was already in the air, but was failing to connect. They were probably drinking tea.
The bomber which had two bombs was now trying to circle and make another pass on the Lancaster. Soldiers started to shot the Stuka desperately.
146352
And doing damage!
I finally reached the combat zone and thinking of doing an Immelman I put a few holes in the Lanc, while soldiers, the Stuka and the Dewoitine exchanged fire.
146353
146354
146355
The Frenchman put himself in an incredible positing, making my plane shake.
146356
The Stuka started to smoke, the troops shoting at him.
146357
AA fire was now more concentrated and acurate. The tea was probably over.
146359
Shells were exploding right on my side.
146360
The Stuka crew screamed on the radio
Hey Werner! Where are you!?! His destroying us!
Going for a reverse. Hang on
But indeed he was destroying the bomber.
146361
146362
Death in the form of fire from anti aircraft almost hit my rudder. That really scared me.
146363
The now fragile D.520 made a final struggle to take the Stuka down. As i made a reverse i watched with horror the scene. But the french did much less than he could.
146364
So we combined forces and shot that French pilot heavily.
146365
Hermann said happily:
I shot him down! Yeah!
Indeed you did! I said.
146368
146369
The Stuka closed in for the kill, while the troops in the ground insisted in shot it, making no apparent damage.
146366
146367
The bomb was droped, but didn't make such damages as in the first pass.
146126
Taking the opportunity, I silenced the insistent soldiers. Quite sad. But I dont think I killed them all. At least I didnt want to...
146126
Full throtle to catch up with the Stuka.
146129
But that was when something happened. I dont know what happened to the damn tea, but the AA was furious. They shot right in front of the Stuka and the shell encountered the plane in mid air, hitting his rudder and the final part of the fuselage. Basically shoting it down.
146130
We are going down!!!
146131
146132
I was now alone in the sky. Along with lots of smoke from the AA fire of course.
But I concluded the job.

RULES

I used the basic rules along with some special ones like strafing and bombing. There were scenario rules you can find in the BRF. I used Joaquim's Universal Solo Chart. The D.520 was an ace and the Martlet was Standart. I also used some special rules for random AA shots.

Sorry for any English mistakes.
Thanks

Did you reduce the size of your photos for posting on the site Nick?

No, they were taken from my iPad as always, in the same way the first AAR was made. I'll try to re-upload them.
Sorry.

Report January 5th 1941: Cpl O'Hare, C Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Fusliliers.
Sir, at 0945 hrs, on 5th January 1941, I was commanding a section from C Company just north of Hal Far. I observed two enemy planes being engaged by the RAF. They were shot down and both crews bailed out. As they landed within a short distance of each other I was able to capture them. The enemy gave little resistance. The enemy were two German Officers and 2 Italian Officers. 1 German and 1 Italian had injured there legs on landing but were able to walk. I put the prisoners under guard, having removed their weapons and anything else of military value. Approximately 1145hrs a detachment from the Royal Military Police arrived in a vehicle and removed the prisoners.
Sir.

Thanks Neil. Good to see they are still alive. But they cant return to missions to the rest of the Campaign?

Sorry anyone shot down over ET is considered a POW, unless the dice roller comes up with a 6, 6, 6 combo then I try and work it in that they survived/got away or something like that. But being shot down over Malta does not give them much of a chance to escape, sorry.

Yep, makes sense. Just one more thing: Can I get reinforcements?

That was a very enjoyable AAR Nick.
The story line kept the interest up throughout, and the RT chatter added to the suspense.
Sorry your crews are now guests of HMG. but you carried out your mission superbly.

Nick.
I am going to fly your mission 5 tomorrow, but to fit into the Malta timeline it will be two Italian Stukas, and a fighter. The date will be amended for the correct date for mission 5 to November 1940, and the Allied target will be a Wellington. It looks like a good runner to me.

Thats great Rob. I just played the way I played because of the minis I have. I said in the Briefing that the bomber can be changed so thats totally ok.
Im going to grab some minis the end of the year so my Malta scenarios can be expanded. Actually its just a He-111 and a Spitfire Mk.IX (the rest is WWI), but thats enough to continue the campaign.
Thanks

Great Nick.
By the start of January. The Germans will have arrived at Malta, and all our problems will be over.Remember that the Spits don't arrive until 1942 though. I really should publish the timeline for the various aircraft involved in Malta.
