Ens Carl Franklin flying Yelllow 3 in Section 6 smiled to himself. His section leader Lt Clayton Powell had flown half the sorties he had from the Big E but was fresh from Annapolis with the bars to prove it and that seemed to count with the Brass.

Earlier that week Cdr James had taken him aside.
" He needs a Guardian Angel and you are it , he has the rank but you have the experience in combat and hours, so look after him"

" Sir Yes sir" He replied. Franklin had volentiered for this sortie with this in mind. It was only a recon flight over the atol to identify where the Japanese troops were grouping so it should go without a hitch. He switched on his mic

"See anything yet Lt?"
"Seems to be a road running close to that river, I'm going down to take a look.Cover me Franklin"
" Will do Lt" came the reply.
Powell dropped the nose of his Wildcat into a steep dive, and flipped the switch on his guns. He could clearly see 3 groups of troops stretching for a mile down thw jungle track that passed for a road on this atol Aiming fo the first detachment he opened fire his bullets cutting a great swaithe through the scattering troops (5,2)
Above Franklin circled slowly to his right, watching his CO take on the enemy below. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something approaching out of the West. The Rising Sun emblazoned on its wings was warning enough for the Ensign.

" We got visitors Skipper"
"keep them busy can you Franklin"

"Sure thing but dont hang around to long down there Sir, get back up here'
Powell pressed on his attack of the remaing troops in the first column silencing the few remaining Infantry (5,0) But not before they punished the inexperienced pilot (1) (2).

Fujita flying the green Zero got a bead on Franklin as he turned but failed to drive home the advantage. (drew 6=engine but disgarded as per Evasion trait)zipping over the top of his target.

Powell continued down the road strafing the second column (3'1) ,However these troops were prepared and a hail of MG bullits struck the attacking plane and its pilot (2+pilot)

Franklin, seeing 2 Zeros behind him Immels to gain heght and hopefully gain an advantage

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143030&d=1410186336

But the Japanese pilots were no slouches and turn sharply into the path of the oncoming US plane. Kaneko in the stippled Zero is the first to shoot hitting the port wing (3) Franklins fire seems ineffective (1)

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143032&d=1410186346

The Lt came round with the sound of his wingman's voice in his ears
" Pull up lt, pull up"
Powell glanced arround, his plane was almost touching the canopy of the jungle. The road he had been following was now off to his port side. Pulling back on the stick and opening up the throttle with his injured arm he felt the Wildcat begin to gain altitude.

Franklin was desperately trying to shake off Kenako who again came close to colliding with his foe.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143024&d=1410186306

" Got to get some space from this guy" he thought to himself flicking his plane to starboard. It worked for the moment, Kenako slipped by his tail.

Fujita meanwhile had picked up Powell who had Immelled and was closing on his target.

"Im going in on the ground forces " Powell barked over the RT But looking to his left he saw Fujita and quickly changed his plan of action' He saw the first burst of tracers pass beneath him (0) and as he turned into the on coming Zero he pressed the fire button as did Fujita. At close range the Zero peppered the Wildcat wih cannon and MG (0,0+GJ.6) (GJ for 4 maneuvers) but Powell saw the effect of his rounds as a whisp of white smoke emerged from the Zeros engine (3+engine,2)

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143036&d=1410186363

Franklin and Kenako were head to head The Zero fired first but coming out of a tight turn his aim was poor (0) where as the ensign had a stable plane from which punished the his enemy , a large chunk of engine cowling falling from the Zero (7+ engine)

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143037&d=1410186369

As they passed each other wingtips almost touching Franklin could see Kenako desperately trying to coax his engine back to life.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143038&d=1410186372

Immelling Powell starts to gain on Fujitas slowing plane firing at long range. (2) (2+1) Unable to gain speed Fujita is a sitting duck to the Wildcats guns and as Powell closes he fires a long burst (8 +1).

The Zero flipped over and began to spiral from the sky. a few seconds later the canopy fell away and the white plume of a parachute opened in the sky.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143040&d=1410186382

Franklin turns as fast as he can to get inside of his opponant, who is also making way at a much reduced speed. Seeing his wingman go down Kenako and the odds against him he decides to make for safety.

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143041&d=1410186387
and slips away before the fighters could catch him. (narrowly avoiding the red tablecloth surround which spells death to all that cross it :lol )

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143042&d=1410186392

" Back to the Enterprise Franklin" I'm out of ammo.

"What about the troops sir" came the reply
" Another day, those Zeros could have friends out there too risky to stay here. Follow my lead"

They peeled off and headed out to the safty of the fleet.

Fujita SD FT
Kenako RTB
1 Battalion destroyed 1 reduced to 2/3 strength. 1 unharmed

If those Zeros had not taken engine damage things could have got very sticky for Section 6 Introduced some 90 degree turn cards for the Zeros which makes them i feel more up to there noted manoeuvrability and1 Gun jam card for each lot of chits, the rule being D6 1,2 4 maneuvers 3,4 6 maneuvers 5,6 total gun jam for rest of game.
Dice Roll ( not Bacon) for the pilots wounded and shot down please Neil, followed by another bit of your classic literature to explain the outcome.

PS great little game

"Ok Clayton, were nearly there. Remember line up with the fantail and watch the deck landing officer for direction. I'm right with you and I'll fly alongside all the way down."
"Don't know if I can make it Carl this wound is giving me some gip, I've lost a lot of blood".
"Steady on, steady on. Don't think like that. Now concentrate, keep the wings level, good, now gear down, gear down kid"
"Trying to but the hydraulics are shot, I'll have to pancake".
"Ok, Ok, keep it steady they've got the nets up they know your gear's not down. Easy easy........Oh ****!"

Clayton fought the stricken wildcat all the way down, nearly on the deck it just fell out of the sky. Skidded along the deck and ploughed through 2 sets of wire before coming to a stop. The medic and crash team were straight there. One team cutting him free and lifting him out whilst the second cleared the deck for Carl's landing. Getting the thumbs up he circled once more, the CAG informing him that Clayton was fine, with that thought in his mind he touched down and rolled his plane to a stop. Another mission completed. Now for some chow on the Big E and make sure Clayton was settled in sick bay.

Nice fight, Paul.

Your buddies from VF-6 did a good job and kept the Japs on distance.

A wise decision to end the ground attack after the fight with the Zeros, continuos ground fire could wreck your planes, too.

Real cliff hanger of an AAR as usual Paul.
Good decision about breaking off as well.
Then there is Neil's afterword.
What else is there to say, but "Well done those men".:salute:
Kyte.
