January 1942 - Burma Campaign ‘Tiger, Tiger burning bright’

“Now listen Jiro your hard landing damaged the landing gear so you’ll have to fly the Hien I’ll fly my Zero “. Chui Masaichi Kondo explained to his young wingman as they took off from the temporary strip in Burma where they had been dispatched from Zuikaku to assist the army advancing towards India.

They took off shortly after and were soon following the dirt road north of Rangoon. They picked up the column, which was static.
136368

Kondo spotted two specs in the distance. “Jiro, enemy. We’ll take them head on then loop and take them from behind.” All he received in reply was “Hai”.

136373

The two P40’s wasted no time in diving down and engaging the head of the column, a line of trucks.

Following the road they continued to shoot up truck after truck. Only after levelling out did they spot the two Japanese aircraft diving down on them.

Kondo and Jiro continued their dive then before anyone could fire they zipped past the P40’s and started their rollover to come at them from behind.

136382136383

Kondo overshot his turn and the wiley P40 pilot throttled back and let rip as Kondo’s zero flashed by his nose. Kondo sensing the American was going to fire lifted his left wing and most of the American’s fire passed under the wing. (Using his evasion to nullify the 8 damage chit). But a bullet hit him in the arm as it passed through the rear of his seat. (He thought to himself that he must pass onto the navy board to get the zero some cockpit armour!).

136384

The lead P40 continued to shoot up the column as Kondo closed, his cannon fire just missing the American.
136385

Jiro blasted the rear P40 just as it’s machine guns rattled more holes in Kondo’s Zero.

136386

A chase was heading down the road. P40 followed by Kondo followed by the 2nd P40 with Jiro bringing up the rear. Bullets thudded into all 3 lead aircraft from their respective tails.

136387136388

Kondo’s zero just died in his hands. He managed to head over to the low lying trees in the hope of a safe landing. A gap appeared and Kondo, undergear up, landed the zero on it's belly (See butchers bill). Getting out of the cockpit he watched Jiro taking on the two Americans. A squad of infantry were already making their way over to assisit him.

136389

Small arms fire started pinging around both P40’s as the infantry column on the ground gathered its wits.
136390136391

The rear P40 went down near to Kondo. Kondo watched as the P40 landed near perfect with yards of his zero (see butchers bill). The infantry squad were on hand to drag the pilot out of the P40. Kondo stopped them from rough handling the prisoner. Jiro pressed on to get the remaining P40.

136392

The P40,with engine misfiring, banked around the bend in the road and opened up again. Jiro close enough now let rip himself and was rewarded by seeing many of his bullets strike home.
136393

Getting closer still his last burst did for the P40’s engine and it ploughed into the ground.

SUMMARY
1. Another fantastic scenario to fly.
2. Unfortunately for the Japanese thats 1 battalion that won't be fighting to the north for a very long time.
3.Thought this one should be fought out at low level hence the terrain.
4. All in all the dice roller came out on tops for once, 5's all round.
5. And 73 chits of damaged!

Another masterpiece of the games master's art Neil. So many trucks and bikes.
Methinks I'll have to shoot up some Italians over in Sicily soon.
Well done. The terrain was magnificent, and the outcome was not bad either.
We may just hold India for a bit longer than Singapore now.
Rob.

Well not having any 6mm Japanese I had to bring in my Early German 7th Pz Div trucks, Infantry and cycle unit to act as doubles!

Great scenario, Neil.

Kondo turned around in front of a P40...

Ok, you shot both of them down, but the damage the Tiger did to the convoy was scary. :erk:

Congratulation to a succesful mission. :salute:

Yes he mistimed his loop, well I did. The static convoy was well shot up. I think I only played 6-7 moves of cards, at 3 seconds per card, whole straffing run took 30-40 seconds in total to complete. Utter devastation.

Great scenario, Neil.
