Honored Father:
I hope that this letter will find you and mother in good health. Before I start telling you about my adventures, I must assure you that brother is well and sends his love and respect. Secondly I must ask you to ask mother's forgiveness for stealing her two photos from her yellow box. One of them I send back in this letter, as I'm in the same squadron with brother so I won't need it. The other one I'll keep with me. It's the photo of both you, father and mother, that you took the day I was born nineteen years ago.

I can't tell you where we are, but yesterday we took our first combat mission against the Americans. Brother is always telling me - he worries so much about me - that I must be quiet about some things, but I must tell you, my father, that the Americans are not the weak and degenerate people that our officers paint them to be. Rear Admiral Kakuji Kakuta sent us to strafe and bomb several american airfields, trying to get as many as possible by surprise. Taii Mitsuo Fuchida, our squadron leader assigned me and brother to harass and bomb a small airstrip. "You brothers will take care of each other", he said, "Mikeyung Quinn, as senior and older brother, you'll take Nikou as your wingman." I was very proud, father. Even when brother said, "I will, Taii Fuchida! I'll bring the kahoumono chotto oni in one piece back to the carrier!" And they all laughed, father, and to tell you the truth I also joined laughter. Brother calls me lucky little demon ever since I was assigned to the Ryūjō next to him. And it's true. I have been very lucky.

And so we went. As we were getting close to the airstrip we discovered a returning american fighter. A Wildcat. Brother said: "Let's drop the bombs quickly and engage the fighter." And I replied "Now?!" He laughed. "No, kahoumono chotto oni, over an american plane. But let's be quick about it. The bombs are making us slower." And we went on.

And suddenly there we were. Over the small island. Just four planes stationed near the airstrip.

And from the ground, in a small hidden position a AA machine gun saluted the arrival of our planes hitting me lightly. "Anti aircraft fire!" I told him. "Take care of them", he replied absently.

I cut left and brother side-slipped the American fighter that went up for a reverse.

The American managed to fire against me from close distance and if wasn't for my quick reflexes he would have done me much more damage. "Drop that bomb quickly", brother ordered.

We circled the island for another pass on the grounded fighters. "Drop the bomb!" Brother commanded. "I will" I replied, decided to do it.
