Sorry to keep you waiting, but we had a delay in finishing the war. Here's how it all unfolded -

Sortie #7 - Hunter's D.Va (Udet) vs. Scott's Spad XIII (Baracca)

This dogfight saw speed vs. speed. The first 15 minutes saw both pilots trying desperately to gain position on the other with neither being successful. Finally, the inevitable head on confrontation occured and Baracca came out the healthier plane. After multiple head on passes Baracca gained the advatage and ultimately, with Udet on the defensive, scored the victory as Udet succumbed to the Spad's superior speed.

Winner - Scott (Scott leads 4-3)

Sortie #8 - Hunter's Fokker D.VII (Udet) vs. Scott's Sopwith Snipe (Baker)

Once again the two top fighters squared off against each other. The early advantage went to Udet who quickly gained position on Baker. But unfortunately he had little to show for it except two gun jams. This only increased Udet's resolve and he continued his expert flying and soon had Baker on the run and heavily damaged. It was only a matter of time before Baker fell to the constant barrage of bullets, leaving Udet to add another notch to his plane as he scored his 5th kill, achieving coveted ace status.

Winner - Hunter (War tied 4-4)

Sortie #9 - Hunter's Sopwith Camel (Barker) & Sopwith Snipe (Barker):) (yes, we know) vs. Scott's Fokker Dr.I (Kempf) & Fokker D.VII (Goering)

For the final and deciding battle we saw 4 planes take to the skies. The Barker twins split up to attack from the sides while Kempf and Goering manuevered to attack together. The initial engagement saw damage to all the planes, but Kempf was clearly the worse for wear after the initial pass. Despite suffering a gun jam and catching fire, the Snipe continued to manuever itself into perfect position while the Camel steared clear of trouble while scoring long range hits on both Goering and Kempf. The battle wasn't going well for the Fokker's, and this dictated the remainder of the dogfight. With Kempf's plane heavily damaged, he was forced into avoidance manuevers, but the Dr.I's inferior speed was his downfall as the Camel closed on him and delivered the killing blow. With Kempf's plane screaming to the ground with a trail of black smoke, Goering saw his chances for victory slipping away. With his plane also heavily damaged, his attempt to avoid another head on pass with the Snipe backfired as the Snipe gained his 6 and peppered the D.VII with a volley of lead. Goering's D.VII shook violently and broke apart, it's pieces plumeting to earth in a shower of debris. The Barker Twins circled the smoldering wreckage in victory before heading back to home base where a brand new Rumpler awaited.

Winner - Hunter (5-4)

And so ends the Rumpler War. We'll see what happens when Series 5 comes out . . . ;)

Well written Scott, and well done Hunter! If we are to have a repeat match each time, roll out series 5, 6 and 7 as soon as possible. Tomorrow should see Nigel Bouncer-Smythe on another of his sorties over Hunland, so look out for his report later this week.
Rob.

Nice report, congrats Hunter, better luck next time Scott. So if Hunter gets the Rumpler, does Scott get a Se5a?
