Waking the sleeping giant.....
131311
The plan of attack.
131312
Kate taking off from Shokaku
131313
Val's waiting for take off.
Chui Domoto Tsuyoshi and his wing man Aikawa Show were amongst the first wave of dive bombers in Group 1. Assigned to attack dry dock facilities on the eastern side of Pearl Harbor. Below him he could just make out two Kate torpedo bombers flown by Chui Atsumi Kyoshi and Oguri Shun. Ahead he could make out the dry docks with at least 2-3 ships in them and a larger ship docked alongside a wharf. He could not believe his eyes, he rubbed them to make sure, yes it was. “Look, it's the Yorktown. We have her, we have a carrier.” He swiftly passed the message over the radio.
131314131315
Their attack was slow dur to carrying bombs and torpedoes. They could clearly make out their targets. Kyoshi called his wingman, “We’ll make the turn over the freighter and begin our attack run”. None of the Japanese aircraft were aware of the lone US P36 about to attack them from the left!
131316131317
“Break, break, break” Shouted Tsuyoshi. Both Val’s wheeled left and right in a pre-arranged tactic. The Kate’s below flew ponderously on.
131318
Now sandwiched, the US pilot was caught but he stuck to his guns.
131319131320131321
Awakened by the explosions but now ready for action the crew of an AA gun opened up on the Kates but were way off target. Sleepy eyes do not make for good shooting.
131322
Aikawa Shu could not shake the P36 off his tail. By turning left he hoped to out-turn the P36.
131323131324
The AA battery now fully awake had adjusted the range and watched a shot seemingly lift a Kate a few feet in the air but it carried on without any apparent damage.
131325
Eventually the P36, trying to stay with the Val clipped the tail of the Japanese aircraft and the pilot looked on as his prop disintegrated and his P36 headed for the water of the Harbor. Fighting a dead stick he managed to left the nose enough to splash down and get out to stand on the wing of his barely afloat plane to watch the Japanese attack unfold.
131326131327
Kyoshi and Shun had turned, using the freighter as a guide and were now skimming the water ready to drop their deadly torpedo’s. They could see men running around the deck of the big carrier but it would do them no good. The ship was tied up, going nowhere and about to be hit by 2 torpedoes.
131328
Tsuyoshi aware that the torpedo bombers were beginning their attack run decided to bomb the destroyer in the dry docks. Two birds with one stone he thought. So he pushed the stick forward and began his dive attack.
A lone P40 pilot had made it to his aircraft and was now throttling down the runway trying to catch up with the Japanese bombers.
131329
Torpedoes away, bombs away. All 3 Japanese planes now only had thoughts of getting back to their own carrier. Job done. TORA, TORA, TORA.
131330
The torpedoes slammed into the starboard side of the Yorktown. The crew helpless to stop them.
The first torpedo did the most damage. The explosion ripped through to the torpedo store causing even more damage (D special damage chit =100pts+special damage card) plus a fire had started.
The 2nd torpedo just widened the breach in the hull (D damage chit no special damage shown = 100 pts damage+no special damage card)
131331
Tsyoshi was astounded as his 500lb armour piercing bomb literally blew the bow off the destroyer, the resulting explosion severely damaging the dry dock. Two for the price of one he thought as he pulled up and turned for home. (D chit no special damage = 50pts damage and no special damage card)
131332
131344
The P40 pilot not having time to gain height flew low straight and level and bounced the two torpedo bombers as they turned.
131333
Aikawa heading over the docks, was surprised when his Val took a direct hit from a flak burst. No serious damage but now all he could think of was to put a bomb into the carrier.
131334
Fully awake and wanting revenge the 2nd AA round that hit Aikawa’s Val nearly blew it out of the air. 298
The US P40 pilot was having fun. Like shooting ducks at the fairground. Only this was for real.
131335
Aikawa, over the deck of the Yorktown began his dive.
131336
The AA battery again on target but no damage. Aikawa was leading a charmed life.
131337
Catching up with the torpedo bombers again the P40 let rip and watched with satisfaction as the kate ploughed into the harbour.
131338131339
Pushing his advantage of speed the P40 closed on the 2nd torpedo bomber, only this time the rear gunner was a bit to hot, as bullets started pinging into his airframe.
131340
No escape Jap. His 2nd kill of the morning. With no chance of gaining altitude the P40 pilot headed back to the airfield.
The Butchers Tally:
131341
P40: RTB. 10 damage.
P36: SD/25 damage. Lucky to survive.
2 destroyers OK.
AA battery ok
131342
Yorktown: 353 damage. Sunk in harbour.
DD Shaw: Destroyed.
131343
Chui Domoto Tsuyoshi: RTB/10 damage/1 destroyer sunk
Aikawa Show:RTB/14 damage/1kill (rear gunner)/bombed Yorktown
Chui Atsumi Kyoshi:SD/KIA/19+damage/torpedoed Yorktown
Oguri Shun:RTB/13damage/rear gunner killed (D 5 damage is wrong aircraft and was discarded as part of evasion skill byAikawa Show)/Torpedoed Yorktown
Summary:
Cracking scenario to fly. That P36 pilot was good. A bit of a mix up with the chits but sorted in the end. Looking forward to scenario 2. Transposed the Yorktown for the Pennsylvania. Only capital ship model I've got.
