Waking the sleeping giant.....

131311
The plan of attack.

131312
Kate taking off from Shokaku

131313
Val's waiting for take off.

Chui Domoto Tsuyoshi and his wing man Aikawa Show were amongst the first wave of dive bombers in Group 1. Assigned to attack dry dock facilities on the eastern side of Pearl Harbor. Below him he could just make out two Kate torpedo bombers flown by Chui Atsumi Kyoshi and Oguri Shun. Ahead he could make out the dry docks with at least 2-3 ships in them and a larger ship docked alongside a wharf. He could not believe his eyes, he rubbed them to make sure, yes it was. “Look, it's the Yorktown. We have her, we have a carrier.” He swiftly passed the message over the radio.

131314131315

Their attack was slow dur to carrying bombs and torpedoes. They could clearly make out their targets. Kyoshi called his wingman, “We’ll make the turn over the freighter and begin our attack run”. None of the Japanese aircraft were aware of the lone US P36 about to attack them from the left!

131316131317

“Break, break, break” Shouted Tsuyoshi. Both Val’s wheeled left and right in a pre-arranged tactic. The Kate’s below flew ponderously on.

131318

Now sandwiched, the US pilot was caught but he stuck to his guns.

131319131320131321

Awakened by the explosions but now ready for action the crew of an AA gun opened up on the Kates but were way off target. Sleepy eyes do not make for good shooting.

131322

Aikawa Shu could not shake the P36 off his tail. By turning left he hoped to out-turn the P36.

131323131324

The AA battery now fully awake had adjusted the range and watched a shot seemingly lift a Kate a few feet in the air but it carried on without any apparent damage.

131325

Eventually the P36, trying to stay with the Val clipped the tail of the Japanese aircraft and the pilot looked on as his prop disintegrated and his P36 headed for the water of the Harbor. Fighting a dead stick he managed to left the nose enough to splash down and get out to stand on the wing of his barely afloat plane to watch the Japanese attack unfold.

131326131327

Kyoshi and Shun had turned, using the freighter as a guide and were now skimming the water ready to drop their deadly torpedo’s. They could see men running around the deck of the big carrier but it would do them no good. The ship was tied up, going nowhere and about to be hit by 2 torpedoes.

131328

Tsuyoshi aware that the torpedo bombers were beginning their attack run decided to bomb the destroyer in the dry docks. Two birds with one stone he thought. So he pushed the stick forward and began his dive attack.

A lone P40 pilot had made it to his aircraft and was now throttling down the runway trying to catch up with the Japanese bombers.
131329

Torpedoes away, bombs away. All 3 Japanese planes now only had thoughts of getting back to their own carrier. Job done. TORA, TORA, TORA.
131330

The torpedoes slammed into the starboard side of the Yorktown. The crew helpless to stop them.
The first torpedo did the most damage. The explosion ripped through to the torpedo store causing even more damage (D special damage chit =100pts+special damage card) plus a fire had started.
The 2nd torpedo just widened the breach in the hull (D damage chit no special damage shown = 100 pts damage+no special damage card)
131331

Tsyoshi was astounded as his 500lb armour piercing bomb literally blew the bow off the destroyer, the resulting explosion severely damaging the dry dock. Two for the price of one he thought as he pulled up and turned for home. (D chit no special damage = 50pts damage and no special damage card)
131332

131344

The P40 pilot not having time to gain height flew low straight and level and bounced the two torpedo bombers as they turned.

131333

Aikawa heading over the docks, was surprised when his Val took a direct hit from a flak burst. No serious damage but now all he could think of was to put a bomb into the carrier.

131334

Fully awake and wanting revenge the 2nd AA round that hit Aikawa’s Val nearly blew it out of the air. 298
The US P40 pilot was having fun. Like shooting ducks at the fairground. Only this was for real.

131335

Aikawa, over the deck of the Yorktown began his dive.
131336

The AA battery again on target but no damage. Aikawa was leading a charmed life.
131337

Catching up with the torpedo bombers again the P40 let rip and watched with satisfaction as the kate ploughed into the harbour.
131338131339

Pushing his advantage of speed the P40 closed on the 2nd torpedo bomber, only this time the rear gunner was a bit to hot, as bullets started pinging into his airframe.
131340

No escape Jap. His 2nd kill of the morning. With no chance of gaining altitude the P40 pilot headed back to the airfield.

The Butchers Tally:

131341

P40: RTB. 10 damage.
P36: SD/25 damage. Lucky to survive.
2 destroyers OK.
AA battery ok

131342

Yorktown: 353 damage. Sunk in harbour.
DD Shaw: Destroyed.

131343

Chui Domoto Tsuyoshi: RTB/10 damage/1 destroyer sunk

Aikawa Show:RTB/14 damage/1kill (rear gunner)/bombed Yorktown

Chui Atsumi Kyoshi:SD/KIA/19+damage/torpedoed Yorktown

Oguri Shun:RTB/13damage/rear gunner killed (D 5 damage is wrong aircraft and was discarded as part of evasion skill byAikawa Show)/Torpedoed Yorktown

Summary:
Cracking scenario to fly. That P36 pilot was good. A bit of a mix up with the chits but sorted in the end. Looking forward to scenario 2. Transposed the Yorktown for the Pennsylvania. Only capital ship model I've got.

Why the he... I'm seeing this AAR today?

Camouflage option?

First I have to congratulate to this great PTO mission Neil.

Your design abilities know no limits.

The harbour is beautiful arraged, the ships, the dockyards...

The conversion of the Martlet does look very intersting. Maybe a quick way to get nice looking early USMC Wildcats. :fixit:

Same goes for the green Val dive bomber.

I have three of them and thinking on a repaint, know...

I know the camo zero was out of place, but I wanted a separate colour when doing the reports to differentiate between them.

Great show Neil.
Talking of shows, you really must do something like this at Derby or Doncaster.

Neil,
Do you have cards for P-36s?

Do you want some?

Mike :)

Lt. S.Kafloc
05-11-2014, 23:55
Would love some Mike, I made some with a cut out P36 stuck onto a blank. A nice crisp one would be lovely. I will leave the design upto yourself as I have yet to order any from AIM yet. So I can follow your design when I do. Could you make them Pearl Harbor variants if possible, Cheers.

Neil

OldGuy59

Neil,
First one...

132641
2Lt Philip M. Rasmussen. First pilot to shoot down a Zero during the attack of Pearl Harbor.

Second one...

132642
Lt Harry W. Brown, in a grey Hawk, who shot down two Kates with only one working .30 cal gun. So, technically, his plane should be A/A.

There are five pilots who shot down planes during the Pearl Harbor attack. I could find them and do them, too.

Mike :)

PS: The background is from Hawaii, just west of Wheeler Air Field. Courtesy of Google Earth.

Lt. S.Kafloc

Mike the are fantastic. If you could do the five that would be great.

OldGuy59

Neil,

As requested. Not sure about the 2Lt Malcolm "Mike" Moore plane markings, but #90 was recorded as engaging the enemy on the day.

132693

According to record, Moore flew wingman to Lt Brown (47th PS) on 7 Dec, amidst all the confusion.

I can't figure out if Lt Rogers or 2nd Lt Dains were flying P-36s or P-40s on the day. Whatever. The tail and engine cowling numbers aren't visible on 47th PS planes from the top, so nothing to distinguish them on a card...

132694132695

Mike :)

PS: 46th PS planes flew out of Wheeler Field, 47th PS planes flew out of Haleiwa Field. 2nd Lt Dains was shot down by US AA returning from a victory over Kaawa.

Found something about 2nd Lt Dains, so rank fixed - Star Advertiser - Last Tribute to a Dec 7 Hero (http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/20110529_Last_tribute_to_a_Dec_7_hero.html)

Lt. S.Kafloc

Cheers Mike. A quickie on the 46th planes, is the overall colour silver? and is the band over the engine (between cowling and canopy) brown?

Neil, where did you get the lighthouse? It looks really nice.

OldGuy59

Cheers Mike. A quickie on the 46th planes, is the overall colour silver? and is the band over the engine (between cowling and canopy) brown?

Neil,

46th PS planes were natural metal finish, with an olive drab nonreflective panel on the nose.

132719

47th PS planes were:
a) dark gray top and light gray bottom with numbering in all black,
b) olive drab top and light gray bottom, with numbering in yellow and white, or
c) olive drab (light brown?) overall, with numbering in black,
depending on source.

132720

The above images are part of what I used to make up the cards. Neither image show the black walk stripes by the fuselage.

Mike :)

Lt. S.Kafloc
05-14-2014, 01:05
Fantastic info Mike. Cheers for that. Didn't think about a non-reflective panel but it makes sense now. I'm thinking of 4 P36's, two from each squadron, backed up by the two P40's I have for Kanoehe Bay/Pearl Harbor.

So, you need two P-40s, one each for Ken Taylor and George Welch?

Mike :)

05-14-2014, 09:57
Hmm, it looks like Mr Bandsaw needs to meet Mr P-40 to make a few Mr P-36's . . .

OldGuy59
05-14-2014, 11:54
Neil,
In case you can't find any cards for these two...

[Edit: Removed. See cards below.]

The plane is from the Max Headroom card below, but I used the Unofficial Stats Committee figures, and a Google Earth Hawaii background.

Nice cards but the P-40B needs a more pronounced top duct on the cowl and a machine gun either side of it if you want to be super detailed with them.

Wayne,
Drawings of the P-40B show the cowling scoop and guns. Also, only two wing guns per side. So, is this better?

I was under the impression that apart from the stars there were no other markings, certainly no tail markings. Any of the B17f's would do as all the aircraft crews mentioned have their own stories to tell. I will leave it up to you Mike.

OldGuy59

B-17E from 38th Reconnaissance Squadron:

133499133500

Minimum ferry crew, and no gunners. According to the description in the above reference link, the planes may have had guns. However, they didn't have any ammunition on board, as it was a ferry flight. Extra fuel was carried instead. I suppose a saving grace would have been that all that extra fuel was gone by the time they arrived in Hawaii. The waist gunner positions had the window panels installed, and the Radioman gun was in the stored position.

Good luck with the scenario, Neil.

Mike :)

Really, after the damage Ye Olde Pub took (Link (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?14017-the-warrior-code-an-act-of-chivalry-forms-a-bond&highlight=chivalry)), the planes in Hawaii barely got scratched. The B-17 was a flying tank.

Yep, just looked at the damage those birds can take, 44. Wow that's a lot of bullet holes to bring one down. I'm glad I keep it to just one B17 for the Pearl Harbor/Kanoehe Bay games!
