South-West Pacific July 1942

Two Grumman Wildcats of VF-5 from the USS Saratoga were on a mission to attack a small Japanese outpost.

Experienced Lt. Kenneth Bowman was the wingleader in his famous Grumman F4F-3 "Black 13". His wingman was a new replacemant transfer after the Battle of Midway, Lt.Jg. Konrad Upton with a Grumman F4F-4.

AA fire and a single Zero expected the US-Navy pilots.

While Bowman cared for the Jap, Upton went for the Aichi Val dive bombers, that were standing beside the runway.

Upton's salvo destroyed the first dive bomber.

Bowman passed the Jap and join in the strafing. He tried to silence the AA battery, butt missed.

Both Wildcats concentrated on the last parked dive bomber.

The moment Bowman turned around with an Immelman maneuver, the AA battery fired again and damaged Upton's F4F-4 a second before "Black 13" silenced the AA guns.

Meanwhile the Zero had finished his curve and opened fire upon Bowman.

The enemy pilot concentrated himself on Bowman's plane ignoring the other incoming Wildcat.

So Upton scored a lot of hits in the Jap's fuselage.

The Zero had noc chance with that much firepower on it's six...

...and crashed into the sea.

Via rado Bowman ordered his wingman on his side and abstained from a second strafing run due to the received damages.

I must say the pictures were deceiving my eyes perfectly, Sven. The 3D depth scenes are truly fantastic.
It was just like in the movies!
The mat is one of the bests I have ever seen
