Experienced Lt. Kenneth Bowman was the wingleader in his famous Grumman F4F-3 "Black 13". His wingman was a new replacemant transfer after the Battle of Midway, Lt.Jg. Konrad Upton with a Grumman F4F-4.

Meanwhile the Zero had finished his curve and opened fire upon Bowman.
