August 28, 1915
"So, Joachim, do you care to take to the air with me?" I gasped, almost dropped the small wooden plane I was carving and looked at Oberleutnant Schultz smiling face. I was about to jump but in the last second I controlled myself. "Don't mind if I do, sir", I replied trying to maintain a calm voice, "some exercise would do me good." He laughed and patted me strongly in my arm. "Well said, Joachim! Well said! Meet me at the strip fully equipped. The sky is cloudy and that makes me nervous. Let's go up for a patrol." Now I couldn't stop myself from jumping and running to my quarters, still listening to the amused laughter of Oberleutnant Schultz.

We moved in and out of small but dense clouds in a boxed pattern around our airfield. Back to the air I was happy as any child could be. But this time I wasn't going to make any mistake. "The French are putting up a good fight", Oberleutnant Schultz said before we get into our cockpits, "now they are flying in bigger formations to compensate their inferior planes", and I nodded. I had listened to this several times during my time grounded.

I kept looking around trying to see small points against the white of the clouds but it seems that this patrol would be uneventful. Not that I minded - I was happy just to be in the skies, listening to the fluid sound of my engine, the hot summer breeze in my face.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc303.jpg
We entered another cloud and Oberleutnant Schultz's plane became a grey ghost in front of me. I kept my eyes in him, not only not to lost him, as for fear of crashing against him.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc304.jpg
As the cloud began to disappear around us, I felt the impulse to arm my machine gun. I didn't do it, taking as a silly thing on the account of feeling vulnerable inside the cloud. Later I would see it as a sixth sense that I should always listen to.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc305.jpg
They appeared from another cloud, almost in front of us as we left the cloud we were in. I guess we all were surprised for nobody fired against us and we only had time to arm our weapons.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc306.jpg
We quickly turned right, maintaining formation but the French kept moving straight ahead for a while.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc307.jpg
I felt, more than I understood, that Oberleutnant Schultz would go for a reverse, so I throttled up my engine.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc308.jpg
We got out of the cloud in a controlled stall that turned our planes around. We couldn't see the French but we knew where they were.

And we got inside the cloud again. Blinded and, I must admit, a bit scared. We were two. They were four.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc310.jpg
And as we left the cloud we disintegrated our formation, each of us trying to keep our eyes in one Frenchman. Oberleutnant Schultz crossed my path below me and he gave me the sign of good hunting. And into the hunt we went.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc311.jpg
He got inside another cloud while I was surprised by a Saulnier appearing from that same cloud, ghostly but firing real lead bullets.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc312.jpg
But his accuracy was completely off and I was uninjured.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc313.jpg
Oberleutnant Schultz would tell me later that entering the cloud he fired against another ghostly plane, but his weapon immediately jammed. Still inside the cloud he tried to unjam it.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc314.jpg
The clouds made our dogfight look like an hide and seek game, but we were still in inferiority of numbers and suddenly I saw myself alone against three French planes.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc315.jpg
Another ghostly plane fired against me while I tried to maintain my eyes in those I could see. But he missed again. I felt I was being very lucky...
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc316.jpg
Then I made a perfect reverse and I had all four French in front of me. But no sign of my leader. If he was shot down, I wasn't able to find out in the midst of the clouds.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc317.jpg
I fired against one of the French planes but I missed. But I pressed on.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc318.jpg
All the French were moving away from me so I felt secure in tailing the Saulnier I shot against before.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc319.jpg
I fired a long volley and I saw his wing snap in the middle of the air.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc320.jpg
And down he went, the poor bastard, incapable of landing his doomed bird. I had even the odds at the cost of a man's life.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc321.jpg
And then with a sigh of relief I saw Oberleutnant Schultz coming out of the cloud, unscathed.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc322.jpg
That was enough to give me back vigor to pursue another Frenchman. I dived again into a cloud to fire against a ghostly plane.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc323.jpg
But my bullets missed him by far.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc324.jpg
And as I went further inside the cloud to regain momentum, Oberleutnant Schultz faced two French planes and, as he would say later, they had it all while he failed to make an impression.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc325.jpg
The Frenchmen raked his plane quite heavily and wounded him in his left arm and leg. But he fired back...
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc326.jpg
... Just to jam his weapon again. A trail of smoke and blood followed him while he tried to hide his plane in the clouds.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc327.jpg
And while I made a careful reverse in the middle of a cloud, one of the French wasn't ready to leave his prey alone.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc328.jpg
He fired again adding to the damage the Fokker already had.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc329.jpg
And as I was leaving the clouds, Oberleutnant Schultz tried to maintain his plane away from the French pilot and inside the protection of his cloud.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc330.jpg
I returned to clear sky to find two Saulniers flying almost in front of me. Oberleutnant Schultz was again in dire problems.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc331.jpg
Again he took damage and he felt, as he told me later, that this was the end for him.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc332.jpg
At the same time I was trying to put some damage in one of the Saulniers but failing terribly.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc333.jpg
Terribly damaged, Oberleutnant Schultz was able to evade his nemesis. I for myself was still trying to take down another one.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc334.jpg
And although I though some damage had connected, my joy was cut short as my machine gun jammed. Luckily I was inside the cloud now.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc335.jpg
And for some time I was alone.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc336.jpg
Trying hard to unjam my machine gun. Poor maintenance? Humidity? Bad bullets? Damn!
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc337.jpg
And then I left the cloud and was alone in the open sky.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc338.jpg
I saw one of the French entering again another cloud. I turned to pursue him.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc339.jpg
And then I saw Oberleutnant Schultz leaving the cloud I just left, moving away in our 'drome's direction. His plane a complete mess. I had to join him to protect him.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc340.jpg
The French were all out of sight. Better that way. I quickly reversed.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc341.jpg
I saw the Frenchman leaving the cloud but I guess he didn't see me as I left my cloud just for a brief moment.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc342.jpg
And I went full throttle, trying to catch up with Oberleutnant Schultz.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc343.jpg
Which I did some miles later. He was able to land his plane and as I ran to helping him to get out of his cockpit he laughed at me and said weakly. "That's your fifth." And he fainted.
He would wake up hours after in the hospital. "How are you?" I asked. "Fine", he said, "these are just flesh wounds." And he laughed hard, the way he always did and I knew he was okay.
Scenario Briefing:
1. Inside the clouds a plane can only fire at enemies in close distance but damage is per long distance rules.
2. The first time enemies see each other they cannot fire. They were caught by surprise and must first arm their weapons.
3. If an AI plane looses sight of the enemy and must plot manoeuvres he must move to the centre of the table.
"So, Joachim, do you care to take to the air with me?" I gasped, almost dropped the small wooden plane I was carving and looked at Oberleutnant Schultz smiling face. And as I was leaving the clouds, Oberleutnant Schultz tried to maintain his plane away from the French pilot and inside the protection of his cloud.

I returned to clear sky to find two Saulniers flying almost in front of me. Oberleutnant Schultz was again in dire problems.

Again he took damage and he felt, as he told me later, that this was the end for him.

At the same time I was trying to put some damage in one of the Saulniers but failing terribly.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc333.jpg
Terribly damaged, Oberleutnant Schultz was able to evade his nemesis. I for myself was still trying to take down another one.

And although I though some damage had connected, my joy was cut short as my machine gun jammed. Luckily I was inside the cloud now.

And for some time I was alone.

Trying hard to unjam my machine gun. Poor maintenance? Humidity? Bad bullets? Damn!
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc337.jpg
And then I left the cloud and was alone in the open sky.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc338.jpg
I saw one of the French entering again another cloud. I turned to pursue him.

And then I saw Oberleutnant Schultz leaving the cloud I just left, moving away in our 'drome's direction. His plane a complete mess. I had to join him to protect him.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc340.jpg
The French were all out of sight. Better that way. I quickly reversed.

I saw the Frenchman leaving the cloud but I guess he didn't see me as I left my cloud just for a brief moment.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i395/Bayushiseni/Wings%20of%20war%20and%20Glory/scenario%203%20-%20Hide%20and%20Seek/HideampSeeksc342.jpg
And I went full throttle, trying to catch up with Oberleutnant Schultz.
