Balloons in ww2

Can anybody tell me if they used balloons in ww2 and what they where used for ? Because i was looking at the balloon models for wow and i thought they would make nice scenery.And act as an obstacle to break line of site or if you fly into them kill you.

Thank you for the links.I just need to know if the wow balloons are too big or not to use with the standard dawn of war ww2 minis ?

i dont know the real dimension of minis baloon and its base 'cause i dont have any but i think they would work fine enough as barrage baloons.
