There has been a lot of questions asked about how well the game mats from SGN and Wings of Glory would mix. Tonight I took some photos of the two mats together.

As you can see, the artwork is in the same style, but the colors are not an exact match. Depending on the lighting and the angle one views them, they either look alright together or the don't. At the end of the day, I think if I needed a large area of sea with some coast line, I would be willing to use the mats together.

For those that might have missed it, the grid lines on the SGN mat are about twice as thick as what they production mats will have. So they will not stand out as much.

I'll use them together. Once the game begins, I don't know how much folks will pay attention to the differences. Thanks for posting.

That was really an important point I wonder about.

Thanky you for the pictures and comments, Herr Oberst.

This relieves my decision to buy two SoG mats. :)

No problems there then Keith.
Thanks for the heads up.
I will go along with those as the best option I have seen so far and, the first dual usage mat that I have bought.
Rob.

Hello Keith, the mat on the right, the one with the coast is an official mat of WoG or was created by you?
very nice indeed! :D

Lorenzo, it is one of three official mats (http://www.aerodromeaccessories.com/index.php/official-products-2/wings-of-glory.html) made by Ares. The other two look like this:

City mat

Country mat

They can be combined in any fashion to make a larger mat.

It's the continental shelf -- the lighter-color water near the shore is relatively shallow; the darker-color water is deeper. :)

It is good that the sizes are the same. It is a pity that no-one thought of matching the colours.

With the sales figures of the Coastal mat, I'm not surprised at all that they decided on a dedicated SGN mat. Even if they would have made the colors match, the grid would still be there, so would not really match the Wings mat anyway. I think they chose the right solution.

I think after two glasses of rum both mats fit and match perfectly to each other. Well done with the presentation, Keith.

Nice looking, but I will pass on combining them. Now, whether I get into SOG or not remains to be seen.....I will say I am very tempted....

Yes it could. There are lots of nice combos one could do with these mats.

Just how bad are the sales for the Coastal map Keith?
Rob.

Oberst Hajj

The Country mat sales about 4 to 1 vs the Coastal and the City sales about 2 or 3 to 1 vs the Coastal. I think this is mainly due to them not being as useful/modular as the other two, but it also gives insight into that most gamers don't think of aerial battles taking place close to water. At least in WGF. For WGS we need specific mats to properly represent actions over the Pacific.

All that said, the Coastal mat is by far the best looking of the three.

Thanks for the Heads up re sales Keith.
It is true that not many of us have assayed into the water world of WWI.
The Italian arena is full of opportunities, but lacking in official sea planes.

Yes, because heaven forbid any game designer make rules for anything besides "famous" or "iconic" aircraft....

Colors may not match but gives you a larger sea area with the coast. Also looks good for Pacific battles over the ocean.

Out of interest, or should I say ignorance  what are the lines used for on the SOG map?

And yet WGS is full of non iconic planes

They are used to help keep the wind aligned correctly when check a ship's attitude to the wind for movement.

I do have one of the coastal mats.....The SOG mat looks nice.

With the "grid" on the SOG mat I assume they are modular.

I assume the price point for these will be around the same as the WOG mats?

I've not seen a product sheet on them yet, but I'm assuming they would be.

After seeing this thread I shall be getting a SOG sea map (or 2) the grid lines do not phase me one bit. Also in my view the SoG sea map has no Islands. These I will make myself. So in summery the grid lines are not a bother and the colour difference is not a problem as I will not be useing with costal map. Happy camper!

As soon as that Sea mat is available it shall be mine. Along with the Coastal map we'll be able to go straight from Dystopian Wars to Wings of Glory and back again. -insert evil laugh here- ;)
