Operation I-GO was the Japanese reaction to the series of set backs in New Guinea, The Bismark Sea and loss of Guadalcanal. Sometime called Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto last offensive operation. Massed attacks were planned on allied targets Port Moresby to Guadalcanal. Despite the massed attacks the Japanese lost more aircraft than allied defenders. The returning raids exaggerated damage claims convinced Yamamoto his plan had worked. In the end the allies lost 1 destroyer,1 tanker, 2 transports,1 corvette sunk and 25 aircraft destroyed. The Japanese losses were 55 aircraft lost.
The game was planned as two separate attacks. Game one IJN Naval air units over the Solomon Islands. Game two a land based attack on Port Moresby. Only Game only was played.
Board setup. An allied island airbase on far edge of map.
Defenders. Initial defense by four Wildcats two firing sticks from island. With reinforcements coming in!
Attackers. One group of three Kate`s armed for level bombing, escorted by two type 32 Zero`s. The second group was three Val's with two type 32 Zeros. Both groups started two firing sticks from their edge.
Battle. Against all expectations the sneaky Nips took minimal damage in the first pass on the Kate`s. The second pass brought one Kate down and did the other two no good. The Val flight confused the defenders by starting at different altitudes, and changing it, this also confused the Zeros!
Two Corsairs entered the contest and decided to attack my Kate`s. After one pass, they left my Kate`s almost flying Swiss cheese. My break came when they decided to bounce the Zeros escorting me. The Kate`s only had two or three hit points left.
The Val`s and Zeros confused the Wildcats on the other side of the board. I passed my Kate`s to a new player and i took over the Wildcats chasing the Val`s.
Against all odds the Kate`s closed on the target. One of the Zero`s escorting the Kat`s went down. I had shot down a Zero with one of my Wildcats. It is time to confess something. David aka ptownhiker had been flying them and left for another game. Before that he had had a collision between his two planes. Two turns after he left i did the same thing!!!
The Kate`s finally made it over the target bombed and were shot down, they crippled the airfield. The Val`s were finally being attacked and lost one
to another of my Wildcats. The game ended when the last Val bombed and crashed into the target, destroying it.
It was a fun game. My friend Jim flew the Corsairs. I have forgotten the other Wildcat drivers name. Dave started with the Wildcats i finished with.
BobP had two Zeros as did Lou. Another friend Don took over my Kate`s and John started with the Val`s.
Conclusion. I had expected the Kate`s and Val`s to be shot down or chased off long before they attacked the target. I gave them the victory when the dropped the first bomb. There are more photos in the album linked below.
