(All offending remarks removed)

Attack the transports:
Yoshio Fukui was leading his wingman and rookie, Rikihei Inoguchi, on a CAP over two transports that due to the weather conditions had become separated from the main landing force. Unknown to Yoshio the two ships had been spotted by a PBY and co-ordinates transmitted back to Midway. A B25 bomber and a P40 escort were ordered to intercept and destroy. Unknown to Midway the PBY’s radio message had been intercepted by the Japanese carrier group and a single fighter was dispatched to reinforce the CAP. However on board the carrier Yorktown the message had also been received and 2 wildcats, each with a single 200lb, were dispatched to attack the ships too.
(Oh what a wicked web we weave…..).
Historically I know Midway had B17’s and B26 Marauders but lack of models let me play out this mission with what I had. (Now back to the war).

the ships and CAP

115116
the B25 and P40

115117
The Mitchell and fighter escort swing left to line up an attack run. The CAP has not spotted the threat.
The B25 closes in and is fired upon by Inoguchi and the transports AA gun. Minor damage.

115118
Fukui and the P40 exchange shots (with both pilots having the evasion skill Fukui survives a fatal encounter. (top left of picture) Inoguchi unwisely tries to ram his zero into the bomber but misses.

115119
The bomber drops a 1,000lb bomb! And misses. (waterspout to starboard of ship).

The P40 and Fukui go head to head and nearly collide. The rookie doesn’t know what to do so follows Fukui.

flipping their aircraft round they are head to head again this time bullets fly…Fukui feels the bullets rip into his aircraft whilst he is amazed that the P40 pilot has dodged his…The rookie is lost in the clouds.

The B25 is trying to turn and fly over the ships once more.

Fukui and the P40 dance again, too close for comfort…

Help has arrived as two Wildcats join the fray.

115120
and Masaichi Kondō takes his Zero into the fight against the B25. Yoshio Fukui heads for the Kaga badly damaged.

Unable to turn right the B25 labours on with smoke pouring out of its starboard engine.

still on its tail Kondo fires another deadly burst into the bomber, the rear gunner snaps off a few rounds but to no avail as the bomber plunges out of the sky and smashes into the sea below.

115121
the 1st wildcat drops its 200lb bomb right on the money…..The bomb penetrates the deck and explodes in the galley 20 hull points damage and causing a fire.

the P40 not to be out done fires a hail of tracer into the ship and causes another fire. (only count special damage on chits against ships)

The ship damage record 11 hull points remain and it now has 6 fires. First fire chit drawn is a 0. No damage.

Kondo hits back at the P40 as it crosses his nose whilst the 1st Wildcats long range shot goes wide. (The ship takes 2 fire damage)

The P40 is badly damaged and radio’s he is going to try and get back to Midway. Inoguchi and the 1st Wildcat trade shots. The ship takes another fire point of damage.
Kondo fires into the smoking 1st wildcat and misses, the fire on board flares up and the ship takes another 4 hull points of damage. Inoguchi is badly shot up and is thinking about heading back to the carrier.

Kondo with the bravery of a samurai warrior takes the Wildcat head on..this time he can see his bullets hit home but so is the enemies. Fire under control the ship does not loose anymore hull points to fire.

Inoguchi decides to live and fight another day and carefully guides his severely damaged zero out of the combat zone. Wildcat 2 has lined up a bombing run and has dropped his egg. Wildcat 1 decides to run for home as he flies past Kondo.

115122
The ship takes another direct hit from a 200lb bomb. With 20 hull points and another fire the captain orders abandon ship. Many supplies are lost and his crew is picked up by the second ship.
Badly damaged Kondo does not give chase but guides his badly damaged zero and with Inoguchi they head back to the carrier. The US planes job done head for home too.

The Butchers Bill:
115123
Ship 1 sunk
Ship 2 no damage. Rejoins the landing force later that day.
115124
P40 16 Damage. Returns to Midway.
Wildcat 2. No damage. Successfully bombs ship. Returns to Yorktown.
Wildcat 1. 14 Damage. Successfully bombs ship. Returns to Yorktown.
115125
B25: Shot Down. Crew missing.
115126
Masaichi Kondō 11 damage. Wounded. Returns safely to Kaga.
Rikihei Inoguchi, 11 damage. Wounded. Returns safely to Kaga.
Yoshio Fukui, 16 Damage. Crash lands in sea near Kaga. Is picked up safely.

Great run, Neil!

The US boys did a good work, too: Wonded two pilots, shot down one Zero and sunk one ship. :erk:

Great scenario Neil. Also good to see your ship rules in action.
I will try to trial a game with the WWI rules set in a week or so myself.

Having done the WW1 set it gave me ideas of what to use, what not to use and some changes. I'm keeping torpedo's for scenario 6.

I love those ship cards, ships and whatever accounting system you are using for them. It also looked like you were incorporating wind into you scenario..?
Awesome...
