I am putting together a solo campaign following the Distant Thunder rules I found on this site. My intention is to start from Aug 1914 and work my way through the whole war. I am new to this game and I thought working my way through the years would teach me about each aircraft as it came into service. This is where your advice would be really appreciated.

I would like to know which aircraft (both sides) should I start with that would fit into late 1914, are available to buy and are made by Ares? At the moment I only have both duel packs, it took me ages to track down the rules and accessories pack but that is in the post now :-)

I know this is a big undertaking and I'm not going to rush it but it really appeals to me to see individuals develop as the war progresses, also it will give me time to re-mortgage my house to afford it :money:

Thanks in advance

In the files section you should find all you need to know.
Here is a link to a file with all current aircraft in:

In order to start in 1914 you'll have to go non-Ares. The Ares models only started seeing service in 1915.

You will also find that not much actual fighting happened for some time in 1914 Trev. Aircraft were not equipped to deal out death.
The odd Hunting rifle and pistol or shotgun did not make for the easiest of aerial combat. However, finding out what harebrained schemes were attempted will at least give you a laugh.

That was basically it. The rules and set up are more to familiarize yourself with the rules and campaign mode, and possibly to build up some experience with the pilots. As far as aircraft, the only way to play the 1914 as I see it is to use the cards that are posted instead of using mini's. Are's as was said do not have the early war aircraft available, and you would have to buy kits or other setups that require work to bring to are's standards.

Instead, I advise you just use the cards that have been posted by the following, they will basically provide aircraft from 1914 to 1920 with ease.

Guntruck's art.

Max Headroom's art.

Good luck, and remember the idea is to have fun!

Regarding pre-MG armed aircraft circa 1914-15, I use a simple system for engaging enemy with rifles or pistols:

1. Maximum range is half ruler only
2. Damage is limited to a single B card ignoring numbers and applying only special damage.

With small arms you needed a well placed or lucky shot to bring down your opponent.

Good luck with your campaign.

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks Al, I think that's the way ahead and sounds like fun. Carl, I think that is mentioned in the Solo rules and it may keep some of my Squadron alive until the new aircraft arrive!!!

Thanks again guys and gals, I will keep you updated on how it all goes with AAR

Cheers

As others have noted, not much shooting at first, as the early planes weren't armed. You could still start in 1914 just flying recon, artillery spotting, etc versus ground fire, until you advance to the period where guns were added. Here's a couple of files I designed just for the kind of campaign you're envisioning: A History of the Air War from beginning to end, & a timeline of the aircraft used by the three major powers on the western front & their operational use.

Thanks! Glad you like them & that they are of use. I designed them for myself, for exactly the same reasons. :)

The "X" decks are from the "Flight of the Giants" box &/or the Giant bombers. There is a file around for "Very Slow Aircraft" in the files. As soon as I can, I'll compare it vs the "X" decks & see how they compare. :)

Thanks Rob, I'll take another look in there. Out of interest can you still get Flight of Giants or Giant bombers? or are they now out of production?

You could use Sails of Glory musket distance for pistols/shotguns. That is the width of the ruler.:test:

For foreign sites I use Firefox and the Google Translate add on. It reloads the page once after you click the "T" in the lower right corner of the window. Unfortunately if you click a link on that translated page the add on won't translate the next one. So you have to use the original page link then translate again.

Sadly, FotG is long out of print. I had to get mine from Germany. The Ares bombers are out of print, but there are still some out there in circulation. I just picked up the last Caproni on the shelf at a FLGS a couple weeks ago. ;)
