TABS (Toronto Area Boardgame Society) 3rd Annual Wings of War tournament will take place Saturday June 15, 2013 in the Upstairs Hall of the Royal Canadian Legion (BR 11) on Dawes Road. The regular quarterly TABScon gaming convention will be taking place simultaneously in the downstairs hall.

We are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Wings of War Tournament titled For Duty & Glory in which Bombers finally make their appearance at our tourney. The matches will take place between 1 and 5pm, with the much coveted trophy and plaque presentation for the Top Ace at the end of the event.

This tournament is a two mission tournament for up to 16 players. Each of the missions will be flown simultaneously in the format listed below. Success in the first mission offers rewards to the winning side that gives them an advantage in the second mission of the game. It also increases opportunities for the side that lost the first mission. Mission incentives are also given to the central powers and entente players on each table with the highest score at the end of the first mission. The tournament has been designed so that players get group points for doing their duty and individual points for gaining personal glory. The pilot with the most points at the end of two missions will be declared the Duty and Glory Tournament Champion!

How will you fly your mission: for Duty or for Glory?

Mission 1 Balloon Busting and Photo Recon
September 1917. Two enemy balloons are creating a barrage barrier to your recon plane. The Aggressors’ mission is to down at least one balloon defended by four enemy scouts. Once the first balloon is down, the Aggressors’ recon plane may enter the map up to no later than 3 turns after the first balloon is destroyed, and attempt to get a photo of the target area. After completing the recon mission, the Aggressors must escort the recon plane off the friendly edge of the lines. The Defenders must protect the balloons and shoot down the Aggressors’ recon plane.

Forces Table 1
Aggressors - 3 Spad XIII’s and a RE8 recon plane
Defenders - 4 Albatross V’s and 2 unarmed balloons

Forces Table 2
Aggressors - 3 Albatross V’s and a Rumpler recon plane
Defenders - 4 Spad XIII’s and 2 unarmed balloons

Scenario Length: 20 Turns.

Firing Rules:
While combat is simultaneous, firing will be conducted in a East to West sequence to ensure firing opportunities for all players will be conducted and will also speed up the game. Firing will be done in a post to base manner. Only the pilot who inflicts fatal damage to destroy an enemy plane will be awarded Glory Points for that kill. Planes destroyed by fire tokens result in no Glory Points being awarded.

Scenario Rules
- the balloon barrage line is set up on the Defenders’ mat, one stick length from where the two maps meet. The line consists of 2 balloons separated by two WoW measuring rulers and a WoW ruler between each balloon and its respective matt edge, balloon bases and rules are parallel and abutting the edge where the mats meet.
- the recon target will be behind the balloon line, set up by the GM.
- all Aggressor aircraft begin on the aggressor's mat with the rear edge of the base touching the map perimeter. All Defender aircraft start with their rear edge on the barrage balloon line
- should an aircraft's base touch the barrage (balloon bases or rulers) it is destroyed in that movement phase
- once a balloon takes 18pts of damage, it is shot down and that balloon along with the two rulers touching it are removed from play
- only one balloon need be shot down to break the barrage
- no altitude or other collision rules are in play
- recon plane must have it's base over the red dot on the target card after playing a long straight or short stall card to successfully take the recon photo
- pilot injured rules only affect the observer in the recon planes and an injured observer cannot take the photo
- the pilot who brings an aircraft hit points to 0 gets credit (and glory points!) for the kill (kills may not be shared)
- the aircraft closest to a target fires first, then next closest and so on (GM note: this encourages pilots to be more aggressive and get in close to shoot first)
- aircraft shot down still get to fire before being removed from play as per standard WoW rules
- all other WoW rules are in play and subject to scenario specific rules

Duty Points
+1 duty point award to each aggressor team member (surviving or not) for each enemy balloon shot down on their table
+1 duty point awarded to each defending player (surviving or not) for each remaining balloon
+1 duty points award to each aggressor player (surviving or not) for a successful photo recon mission. NOTE: the recon plane must make it off the map or survive by end of the scenario for these points to be awarded.
+1 duty points awarded to each defender player, whether or not they survive this scenario, for an unsuccessful aggressor recon mission

Glory Points
+2 glory points awarded to a surviving pilot for each enemy fighter or two-seater he shot down
- the surviving defender and aggressor pilot with the highest score on each table will each draw a random ace ability card, from the ace ability deck, to be applied to their pilot's abilities during the second mission of the scenario
- ace abilities cards drawn will be read aloud by the GM to all players before the second scenario (aces tend to draw extra attention from enemy pilots!).

Mission 2: Bombing Run
September 1917. Bomb the target(s) behind the old barrage balloons. There are three targets present (just two if the photo recon was unsuccessful!). The Defenders must prevent the bomber from bombing target(s) successfully

Forces Table 1
Aggressors - 3x SE5a's, 1x Caprioni Bomber
Defenders - 4x Fokker DVII's

Forces Table 2
Aggressors - 3 x Fokker DVII's, 1x Gotha Bomber
Defenders - 4xSE5a's

Scenario Length: 20 Turns.

Firing Rules:
While combat is simultaneous, firing will be conducted in a East to West sequence to ensure firing opportunities for all players will be conducted and will also speed up the game. Firing will be done in a post to base manner. Only the pilot who inflicts fatal damage to destroy an enemy plane will be awarded Glory Points for that kill. Planes destroyed by fire tokens result in no Glory Points being awarded.

Scenario Rules
- all Aggressor aircraft begin on the aggressor's mat with the rear edge no more than one stick from the edge of the map perimeter.
- no altitude or collision rules are in play
- if at least one barrage balloon was downed during mission 1, there are no balloons in this scenario
- if neither balloon was shot down during mission 1, an “obstacle” balloon is still present as a hindrance to navigation and will be placed longitudinally by the GM in the center of the playing area (room for the bombers to pass must be given)
- any aircraft base that contacts the balloon base is awarded a C deck damage card to that aircraft for each phase the aircraft’s base contacts the balloon base 9this is an exception to the “collision rules not in effect” during the scenario)
- the balloon may be shot down by either side by inflicting 18pts of damage but no Duty or Glory points may be gained for this action in this scenario
- the pilot who brings an aircraft hit points to 0 gets credit (and glory points!) for the kill (kills may not be shared)
- all other WoW rules are in play and subject to scenario specific rules- ace abilities drawn after the Recon scenario are in play for those pilots who earned them

Bombing Rules
- either 2 or 3target card will be place in a triangular pattern on the Defenders’ map.
- if both bombardiers/gunners are injured no bombs may be dropped by the bomber
- when bombing, a gunner must be assigned as the bombardier and this bombardier may not fire his gun while bombing the target.
- the bomber must declare his intention to bomb before playing his maneuver card
- bombing results are determined after fire resolution
- modified bombing rules: bomber need only have it's base over the red dot on the target card after playing a long straight or short stall card to successfully bomb the target
- there is no limit to the number of bomb runs the bomber can make
- pilot injured damage cards only affect the gunners/bombardiers in the bomber
- gunners/bombardiers may not change positions

Duty Points - awarded to players for results on their table
+1 duty point award to each aggressor player (surviving or not) for each target bombed on their table
+1 point award to each defender player (surviving or not) for each target not bombed on their table
+ 1 duty point awarded to each surviving aggressor player if the bomber successful exits the friendly side of the lines
+1 duty point awarded to each surviving defender player if the bomber is shot down

Glory Points - awarded to players for results on their table
+ 2 glory points awarded to a surviving pilot for each enemy aircraft he shot down
+1 glory point awarded to each surviving pilot who shoots down an ace

Tournament Champion
Group duty points are awarded to all players (surviving or not) based on the mission goals. Individual glory points are awarded to players who individually achieve goals that further their personal glory. The pilot with the greatest number of points (duty+glory) is deemed to be the Duty and Glory tournament champion and will be awarded the TABSCON WoW Duty and Glory Trophy. In the event of a tie, it will go to the player whose table team successfully completed the greater number of scenarios (did their duty). If there is still a tie, then it goes to the player who shot down the most aircraft (gained the most glory). In the unlikely event that there is still a tie it shall be decided by a duel with the players flying the aircraft of their choice from either scenario (even if this means two players from the same side must duel).

Clint,
Good Luck on your Tournament. If possible, please post AAR and pictures. Especially, if there are any Forum Pilots in the group.

Have a hockey-sock full of fun!

Mike :)
