A virtually intact Dornier Do 17 on the Kent seabed near the Goodwin Sands has been known about for some time.

Work to recover it has begun:

The last I heard it is thought to be the last surviving Do 17 as only parts survived in museums. For example the RAF Museum has a Do 17 rudder. Also the last I heard is that it will be cleaned and conserved but will not be restored to museum standard. RAF Museum policy is not to turn recovered wrecks into museum models, a policy they previously followed with the last surviving Halifax which was found in a similar condition.

And as if by magic, there's the 4th thread, equalling the duplication of threads on the 260 Sqn P40 found in Egypt.

MODS, WILL YOU PLEASE DO SOME THREAD MERGING? ALSO SUGGEST YOU ESTABLISH AN 'ARCHAEOLOGICAL/WRECK FINDS/RECOVERY' SUB-FORUM IN THE OFFICERS' MESS TO TRY TO LIMIT FURTHER DUPLICATION.

To be fair to all concerned my posting is today's 'new' news that work has actually started on the lifting of the Dornier 17. The work is expected to take three weeks but is heavily weather dependent.

As I understand it, a lifting frame will be constructed around and under the aircraft (in the same manner as the Mary Rose) and the machine will then be lifted on the frame.

Hopefully this IS new...

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/things-to-see-and-do/dornier-17-conservation.aspx

The RAF Museum has launched a blog page where people can keep in touch with the recovery and conservation of the Dornier. By all accounts they plan to use citric acid to neutralise the sea salt on the aircraft's aluminium skin and frame.

Better to have the information twice than not at all, but better still to have it all in the one place and not duplicated!

Worry not Barry - it's a bit like crossing the road, best to look first before stepping off the kerb...rather than getting hit by the (other) three London buses that all come along at once !!

G'Day Barry,

I'm not trying to denigrate what you're doing, in getting info out on the boards. As much as anything else, it's about the way elements of the site are structured and moderated that gives me the irrits.

If there were a better search engine available (half the time I look for things I know are here, the search engine fails to find them) people would be more disposed to use it. I question the value of Tags, as so few people use them (and even if they did, there's still the search engine issue). The Officer's Club (sic) is a dumping ground for whatever people can't find a suitable category for. At least you posted in Historical Discussions, but is it the right place? That's why I suggested that a separate sub-forum be established.

Please don't be put off from posting, but please use the tools available (however inadequate they may be) before starting up something which isn't your own product or story, as it may have been covered before and there is benefit to new members in 'resurrecting' earlier threads as they may contain additional information.

Hi Barry dont worry about it ,ive had "you've not searched every section of the forun before posting" messages ,I often see things in my break at work and share them in the hope that its a help to someone without having time to check every bit of the forum ,and and been rebuked for doing so ,this particular thread by the look of it .:surrender: Problem (or not )is theres so many different sections you could post certain things in and the fantastic amount of subjects we are lucky to have posted on here soon bury things on the whats new section . Please keep posting .

Edit : I personally think this is one of the better forums and not every one will be 100% happy ,thats because we have freedom of speech .

Don't worry Barry,
As Richard says, after all this time there's bits of the aerodrome that are overlooked all the time. An "ooh! Look at that" moment often carries me away and I race off to post. Nobody really searches everything before hitting the send button. Imagine!

Better to get a double post than miss a story like the Dornier I reckon.

That's the whole point of having a search engine to do it for you!

Ah! Engines, er....I have a Fitter for that. I don't have to search for it though - the noise gives it away. ;)

And a Rigger for the funny wires and bits.

And an observer for the complicated map reading.

And a batman for the tea and toast!

Well, I could have called it a 'search facility', but then I guess you need someone to use the facilities for you too.

Having been Latrine Officer ever since the backwards DH4 debacle I can find my way around the facilities no problem Balders.

I can tell you the different properties and capacities of the 1, 2, 4 & 8 hole long-drop; the 8 inch shell case portable, the 50gal oil drum cut off to various heights, the hedge and my sidcot when bullets rip through the fabric close to Yours Truly.

I promise to try not to get too excited by aero related news stories in the future, but the road to you-know-where is paved with you-know-what. Have a drink and don't be a grump. :pint:
