I can't help noticing, when browsing through the postings, the number of times we give out information to new members about useful books, suppliers, etc.
I wondered if it might be helpful to assemble all this information in one place,to give a ready resource area. We could all add our penny worth as we find new interesting sites etc. Who knows, we may even get someone intrepid enough to review some of the books and products. Anyway, for what it is worth, I will start the ball rolling with a list of the books that I have found useful. In no specific order they are:-

Non fiction.

The Royal Flying Corps Handbook. By Peter Cooksley.
Flying Fury. By James McCudden.
Sagittarius Rising. By Cecil Lewis.
The Diary & Letters of a World War 1 Fighter Pilot. By Christopher Burgess.
The First Blitz,1917-1918. By Andrew Hyde.
AlbertBall VC. By Chaz Bowyer.
Richthoffen Jagerstaffel ahead. By Peter McManus.
Mannock. The life and death of Major Edward Mannock VC. DSO, MC, RAF.
The Baby Killers. By Thomas Fegan.
Aces Falling. By Peter Hart.

Osprey Books.
Richthofen's Circus
Nieuport Aces of World War 1.
Sopwith Camel Aces of World War 1.
Sopwith Triplane Aces of World War 1.
And SPA 124 Lafayette Escadrille. American Volunteer Airmen.
Plus many others.

Fiction.
War Story.
Goshawk Squadron. Both by Derek Robinson.
Winged Victory. By V. M. Yeates.
And of course Biggles. By Cpt. W.E. Johns.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but as far as I know most are available either from Osprey publishing, or on Amazon. So come on chaps let's add to our knowledge base.;)

Perhaps we can make this a 'sticky'?

Harleyfords (all out of print but worth selling your Granny for):

Von Richthofen and the Flying Circus
Air Aces of the 14-18 War
Sopwith - the man and his aircraft
Fighter Aircraft of the 14-18 War
Marine Aircraft of the 14-18 War
Bomber and Reconaissance Aircraft of the 14-18 War
Spitfire - Story of a famous fighter
Lancaster - Story of a famous bomber
Me109 - A famous Fighter

Windsock Datafiles
Good information on individual aircraft, too many to list, but pricey for what they are - resort to Ebay.

Putnam Books:
The Royal Aircraft Factory
The Air Defence of Britain 14-18
The German Giants: The Story of the R-Planes, 1914-1919
German Aircraft of the First World War
Aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps Military Wing

Cross and Cockade:
Nieuport Aircraft in RFC, RAF, RNAS and AFC service
The RAF FE2b/d in RFC, RAF, RNAS and AFC service

Right, it seems daft to send a posting every time I remember a book or two - so I've attached a subset of my book library that deals with WW1 aviation. If you haven't got Excel, PM me for a Word copy. If you haven't got Word, PM me and I will hold up a hard copy to my Webcam :p

Knock yourself out, chaps :D

You guys might want to have a look at this thread (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41).

I can merge these two threads and then make it a sticky, but first you guys need to make sure there are no duplications. The other option is to have one of you (who wants to volunteer??) compile a complete list of each of the books and make a post in a new thread entitled "WWI Aviation Books". I will make that thread a sticky and as people post to it with their suggestions, you edit your original post and include the newly added book. I'll keep the rest of the thread cleaned up of post suggesting new books.

Maybe even linking each book to additional info or it's Amazon page would be helpful?

Thanks for the offer. I have now trawled through the files, and think I have all the relevant information. I will now collate it, and sift out any duplications. After that perhaps you will proof read it for me before we put it to bed.

Hi Wayne.
I will get on to that one as soon as I finish the book list.
I also have an idea about adding suppliers of useful materials etc.

Fur boots, flying helmets, that sort of thing? :D

At the risk of starting yet another list, do we have/want a list of aviation related museums? (Enter the Colonel at this point with a link to an existing thread )

Very drole:p
At risk of getting a divorce, yes, we could do with a list for museums as well.
Is this going to turn into death by a thousand lists?

Rob,

You might want to add this one to the list:

Skyfighters of France, at war with the escadrilles of France.

http://helion.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=535&P_ID=102105

£8.99 from Helion direct, but I just picked up a brand new copy from Ebay UK for £3.99 post free. The seller was, err..., Helion

In terms of books, a great find for me at Amazon.com was "AIRCRAFT OF WWI: 1914-1918 (Essential Aircraft Identification Guide)" by jack Herris and Bob Pearson.

http://www.amazon.com/AIRCRAFT-WWI-1914-1918-Essential-Identification/dp/1906626669/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274893807&sr=8-1

Only profiles of the aircraft are provided, but they're all in color. And they say they're all there.

There is lots of neat stuff in it.

One interesting fact that I learned was that the Sopwith Snipe saw just the last two weeks war.

There is a new set of Osprey books that have come out recently that pits 2 contemporary fighters against each other. For those looking for technical info. they have more than most and are a fun read besides.
The ones I have are:
SE 5a vs. Albatros DV,
Sopwith Camel vs. Fokker Dr1
Spad XIII vs. Fokker DVII
Spitfire vs. Bf 109
Seafire vs. A6M Zero

A terrific find recently is the "Under the Guns" series by Norman Franks and others.

The are:

"Under the Guns of the Kaiser's Aces" by Norman Franks and Hal Giblin. Just in case you are unaware of it, it covers the complete record (victories and victims) of four German pilots, Bohme, Muller, Tutschek and Wolfe. I have the other two books in the series on order from amazon. One is about Manfred von Richtofen and the other about Immelman, Voss, Goring and Lothar von Richtofen. They're great for coming up with scenarios for WoW.

Here is an amazon search for Norman Franks' books:
