View Full Version : How about Jets?

FLt Brown

I know it is a leap but has as anyone looked at doing Vietnam using the 1/144 jets that are available from CafaReo if so do you have any cards made up for them??

It is something that has just come up at our club, I think it is linked to the new Flames of War game book that has just come out.

Any help would be most welcome

Regards Kev

I think the cards would have to be 5 to 10 times as long at least. You'd need a monster table mate.

People have mooted Korea as possible theatre but I suspect that the moment you start putting Sparrow and AIM 9 Sidewinders on the table over the 'Nam the fun is going to go out of it pretty fast.

Still, the stats committee might have a fun time with the turn rates and precise lengths

Look at a game called Check Your Six. They have jets but it is a smaller scale. I haven't played the game so you may have to ask about it in a thread.

Actually, CY6!-JA is 'scale agnostic'. It all depends on the size of your available playing surface.

'SCALE: Any scale may be used. Playtested over three years with 1/600, 1/300, 1/200, 1/144, 1/100, and 1/72 scale aircraft.'

http://mysite.verizon.net/fisherts/skirmishcampaigns/cy6/cy6-ja/index.htm

I use CY6! for WWII. The abstraction of height and movement is excellent, and overall gameplay using hexes largely eliminates the 'you're 1mm out of range' rules (or should that be ruler) lawyers.

This is my first card file, i've stopped the work for an "indefinite time" cause i'm working hard on my next comic book, but if you want to start to use it ..you can...about the rules...ok you need a big table...
It's a problem and Attila say this from the start of the project...
Half or 70% print of my PDF file may be usefull????
If you need a particoular plane for your mission ask to me and i realize it for you in one or two days.
Sorry my Eng. is not at the top.

First of all your English is better than my Italian!

Thank you so much for the file and the cards that gives me a good start, I am looking at the ground attack aircraft and air cover so any of the following would be most welcome, F4-J , F-5A, F-8E, A-6A, F-105G, Mig-21PF these are all available in the J-wings and f-toys ranges I am also looking to include the Skyraider as this was still in service as ground attack.

I know it is a long list but if you feel like you can make cards for any of these it would make the game easier to get started.

Thanks Again Kev

Would that be Check Your 6?
If so, a fun game about a level more complex than WGS. Haven't played the jet vesion yet, though.

Thank you to all who have come back on this post.
As for movement cards we played Korea yesterday using Max headroom's cards for the Mig's and the Sabres the game worked well and was great fun using 4 cards for movement in place of the 2 for normal WW2. We used 4 mats from the WW1 game giving a reasonable playing area?
The leap to Vietnam and the thoughts on missiles has raised a number of ideas one is that the missiles range is two firing sticks with the rocket only armed after long range on a normal fire stick?
the attacker selects a movement card for the missile the defender dose the same if the cards match it is a hit if not the defender has dodged the bullet simple but possibly effective.

These are only initial thoughts but could be good fun, there is a possible option that the missile does not leave the rack this may have to be a dice throw but we are looking at this as an option?

Any thoughts ideas to help the game are welcome

Regards Kev

Hi Mumo
That was quick, No I have no preferences but the skyraider it could take a lot of damage so up there in the high teens possible a 20, as for movement may be the I deck?

I am not sure on the attack deck as they carried lots of different equipment rockets / bombs but the main stay was 4 x 20mm canon?

Hope this is of help Kev

They can make for the same play area, just a different ground scale.

03-15-2013, 04:37
I'm assuming the manoeuvre decks shown are just illustrative. No way an F-104 gets the same deck as the others (a succession of almost perfect straight lines followed by a crater as it hits the ground might be a good deck to use!)

A nice thread. :)

If they ever design Wings of Glory Korea, Vietnam or Cold War - I'm in!

Watch at the planes that you wants, give me the "order" and fast as possible i do it!
Now...
the real problem is to have a forum about the rules, how to change it and how more are necessary to have a good play.

1st problem: speed, for me a jet can use only manouvers after 90°, deck indipendet, remove they from the decks. But move twice a turn (possible double the cards in a deck)
2nd problem: the dimension of the gaming area, how much bigger than a standard table? We need testing. Please make various play only for "cach the enemies" and test if is playable like a standard game.(I have no time to do it)
3rd problem: number of ammo for the missile sistem. For me is from 2 to 6, depend on enemy numeber or mission tipe. But bomb, missile, rocket card are on the way...

Don't forget the counter measure sistem like "EFA"version of F104, but for me is a simple dice: 1 to 4 for have no effect, 5 to 6 for a move of the missile card by the defender (change of direction). after this move
a missile like a sidewinder may "link" itself to another target, and cach it! But the missile must have a range of activation, not too far not too near, a personal deck and a limit of move( after it selfdestruct).
I think, about a missile explosion, a trasparent CD (like one in the 10/20 CD pack) may be usefull. Concentric round painted on it to have the entity of the damage by those kind of explosion.

Add your idea to this forum to have our favorite game(the best sellers "Wings of Glory) at the next level, until Andrea give to us an official expansion in this direction (Jets)!

Bye

Thanks again Kev

But the "Spooky" in the Viet Nam war???

Yes, that's right. The C47 Gunship was used by USAF during Nam War.

The C-47 gunship had a few names. SPOOKY and SNOOPY were two of them. The AC-130 was called SPECTOR. Would see them doing their business a few miles from our perimeter when on guard duty. Awesome display of firepower. I beleive they call the LOCH (light observation helicopter) "LITTLE BIRD" these days. In Nam they were used in what were called HUNTER/KILLER teams. The LOCH would fly low to draw fire and then the Cobras would come in and do their thing. There was another chopper called a KIOWA but used more as a liason aircraft from what I know.

Toucan, I believe. It's also known as the T-27 (trainer) and AT-27 for COIN (counter-insurgency) operations.

Pretty hot little turboprop, to be honest.
Yeah, in Brazil it is Tucano (a bird...):surrender:, and thanks for the others names that I have forgotten (right?).;)

Hi Mumo
They did not have the black and white markings on the wings of the Vietnam version of the C-47 ??
I think the gun arcs need moving forward to over the wing as from what I have read they had to bank the plane to fire the guns at the ground possibly move the gun arc to the area of the black and white markings on the body of the aircraft??

Hi Chris
thanks for the comments and pictures but on the details I have found Spooky 71 had guns on both sides check out the painting details I added above?
Mumo could be right the guns could be moved but I think the chain guns would be fixed and as there is no door on the other side it would reduce the fire power from that section?
The thing is that in combat areas lots of on site modifications do happen so anything is possible we could both be right??

Thanks again for the info keep it coming the more we get the better the game will be.

Um -- 'fraid not; the guns were hard-mounted, and were never fired out the right side (at least I've never been able to find evidence of a "right-handed" fire-support bird).

Hi Chris
thanks for the comments and pictures but on the details I have found Spooky 71 had guns on both sides check out the painting details I added above?

I just looked it up -- it had the standard loadout, left-side guns only. As stated above: There's no evidence of there ever having been an AC-47 with right-side guns. (It wouldn't have worked very well anyway -- in order to aim the guns, the pilot to look out the side window nearest him; trying to aim guns on the other side would have required a lot more work, either in the shape of a really cumbersome system for aiming with the side window, or having to fly the -47 from the right seat, which was not the primary position for piloting the -47.)

From what I remember from a 1:72nd model I built of this bird years ago the miniguns were only mounted to fire to the port side.
There was some variation in the actual location of the guns between individual planes as well but that shouldn`t have any effect on the arc.

the rules are under construction, but i think we have they in the next 2 week (test).
This week FLTBrown have a play with those cards, i'm waiting for the feedback.
It's an open source : if you have a proposal for the rule give it to us.

I've wrote the first rules in my language, italian, give me the time to put it in english.:brickwal:
Please take a look to all my new cards, in my album or in this thread, or have files search by nickname "mumo" or "Mumo" (it's me, my wife give it to me...)
Print one or two cards and have in mind what's kind of rule are better, for example for the ground attack with a SU 25 !
In the full deck (16 cards) there is included a"maverick" card and a "sidewinder" card.
Have fun.
In the next days i have to work but i can create AAA Artillery, modern tanks, Military objective (such a Radar station), and things like the Yukikaze or Talon 1 from the movie "Stealth".

Well we got the game going last Saturday and it worked really well, we had 6 Mig21, 4 Phantoms and 2 Thunderchiefs on the table using the WW2 rules for movement.
The Thunderchiefs had to take out the bridge on mat 3 so had the furthest to travel but managed to do the job the Phantoms were providing air cover not so successful?

The rules worked well we used 4 cards for movement and the normal fire stick for guns and a double fire stick for missiles.
The firing for the missiles worked well, the firer picked his target without measuring so that gave a bit of uncertainty if they were in range as the first stick was the arming of the missile and then dependant on the range chose one or two movement cards for the missile, 2 for short range 1 for long. The defender then picked only 1 movement card this was then matched up to the aircraft and the attacker showed his hand if any matched then the missile was a hit the defender then took 2 counters from the C deck as shown on the sidewinder card if there was no match then the defender had dogged the missile( we did not worry too much where it went if it was a miss but if another aircraft was in the firers arc we could have tested for that one, one to think about)

At the end of the game the bridges were taken out but the Americans lost all their aircraft, the Vietnamese had 4 damaged Mig's two critical but came away with a win as they said they would rebuild the bridge over night so no real loss???:guns::crash::crash:

All in all the game worked well I think we may up the missile to the D deck as an out and out kill was not guaranteed on a C counter but thinking about it we may leave the air to air missiles as a C and use the D for the Sam missiles in a future game as we had no ground to air defence in the game.

Sorry no pictures of the game my camera packed up when trying to down load them but we will be having another game so hopefully better luck next time.

I'm happy, very very very happy!
I'm working on the SAM and i can change the sidewinder and Maverik deck move. But i think it's better to reduce the fuel of any missiles to 2 or 3 (what do you think about?)"movement turn" after it's fire.
Another things, remember, when a missile have finished it's fuel it selfdestruct, with an "A" damage, you have to use a trasparent "CD" or a simple "CD"(yes a compact disc) to have the arc of impact.
Next time i provide for a "Flare" card and if the missile is in a "CD range" it chande it's direction for one un it's turn.
In a second time we can use ECM cards.
With the jet series you MUST use this rule: you can double your movement max 3 times (one each turn, in 3 different turn), it's like a "joker movemet" to use at your risk.
In the final release i want to put a number on the card to specify the times of "turbo boost", like 2 for a Meteor or 3 for the Lightning, 4 for the A10, etc..trying to balance power/defence/speed of the various plane.
You like the Meteor and the Lightning cards?
I'm waiting for the next play.:minis::clap:Check the new rules please.
Bye

As the bridge turned out to be a large pontoon bridge due to poor intelligence gathering and not stone the Vietnamese where very adamant they could turn it around in time for the next day’s supplies to go down the trail :embarass:

As for the meteor the card looks great have you thought of Australian markings and camouflage as they used them over Korea and would fit in with that game very well.

OK -- a pontoon or similar bridge, I can believe; I was thinking "Paul Doumer" or similar (the one which took something like *eight years* to finally knock down).

Hi Mumo
Great cards again just one thought should the Sams be on the D deck for damage as they did knock out the jets in one hit??

I have also attached a couple of links to aircraft on ebay.com you may be interested in they send them through very fast.

ichard where did you get the Sabers? I only see them in one kit that has a number of different planes.I pyt the Mig 15 togeter first and thought it is a pretty neat model. I have a case of Wing 8 and see that the Mustangs have 2 different sets of decals for reach plane so have to get another case of them.

Hi Mumo
Well we had the game today and the new cards work well and gave the opportunity to use prop-driven aircraft so I used the Skyraiders.
We used the same scenario of attacking a bridge so we could compare how things worked and the result was about the same so the movement changes had little effect on the game.
I have attached pictures of the cards as a sample so you can see the difference to the standard card and we used 3 cards for a typical move, the slight increase in the cards for the jets does work so looking forward to getting them on the table again.
I have also included some pictures of the missile fire stick so you can see how that works, the missiles are only armed after long range with the first band being two cards and the second being one card as we felt that at long range the defender would stand a better chance of avoiding the incoming missile?
We have not included any anti missile defence as yet but it is being looked at?
I have also included a picture of a missile being measured using the range stick the fire has to say if he is firing before he measures to give a bit more of a risk when firing.
I have also included a couple of game shots showing the Mig 21 trying to stop the Skyraiders attacking the bridge with the 105 trying to intercept!

All in all we think the rules work well and the use of the fire stick for the missiles without being able to measure the range makes for an interesting game and stops people just firing missiles everywhere.

About that card. Aircraft numbers for naval have a system, those ending in 00 are for the air group commander, 01 for squadron comander, 02 on for the rest of the squadron's pilots. 502 would be just another bird, i.e. no such squadron. If it is navy, then no Colonels, equivalent would be a Captain. Again, this would probably mean the CAG (air group commander), and his bird would be 500. Col. is Colonel, CAPT would be navy shorthand for Captain. Now if it is for the Marine Corps who run separate squadron you could have the colonel. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Request for an A-6:

USS Independence, unknown squadron, modex 505, crew LT Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton (pilot) and LCDR Virgil "Tiger" Cole (B/N). (Depicted in film using VA-128 aircraft from NAS Whidbey Island IIRC.)

Two points to anyone who gets the reference...

OK -- a pontoon or similar bridge, I can believe; I was thinking "Paul Doumer" or similar (the one which took something like *eight years* to finally knock down).

You mean the "Dragon's Jaw" at Thanh Hoa, the one that we lost equivalent to an entire carrier airgroup trying to drop IIRC?

Hi Mumo
How are things with you hope you have managed to finish your comic book project?
I was hoping you may have some time to make up the B-52 card in the next few weeks as we are planning a game for the 14th June and would like to get a bomber on the table as a target for the Mig's to have a go at and for the Phantoms to run protection?

May thanks Kev

Kevin want to see the model of the B-52 that will go with the card. I just went a bit crazy on E bay and bought 3 F-86's and 2 F4's. Along with a bunch of WWII stuff I have been looking for.

Hi Bob Just taken delivery of my B-52D and you asked for a picture so here they are. The aircraft is a Corgie diecast and is very heavy so I think I may have to go for a kit version for a game as I do not think I can get it onto a movement base big enough to carry the weight of the model and it would be a shame to drill and try to pin this little baby?

And Thank you for the ebay link I will keep looking???

Pretty awesome model. I know the diecast models are heavy. I havce a model power Betty and it is small so I can only guess how heavy the B-52 must be. Thanks for posting the pic.

Good work man, you can add value to my personal work on the jet era!
But try to have a better "cut on the edge" when you create the plane to put on the card, only to improve the final quality.
Another one little thing, the text must be aligned with the line of the card, take a look to one of my cards,
And,last one, to have a better game, try to change the value of each card...damage...movement deck...is not enough keep an image from wings palette
http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww3/f/57/3/0
and say...i can give to you all the card that you want...try to have a balance in your plane deck,we want the better game as possible!!!
Are about 2 years that i try to have a "Brother in Arms" in my project about jet, ask to the creator of it...
This is the link of all my cards:

Me lo puoi riscrivere in italiano x favore?

Certo ;)!

But...i send to you the new format...why u use again the past?:)
And why you ask it to me,if you don't want to use it?
And is equal to this my old card...see better in this album next time:drinks:(look up)

Ma non s'era detto di usare il nuovo formato che mi hai chiesto via email?
Che me l'hai chiesto a fare?:brickwal:
Tra l'altro è uguale a una carta già pubblicata...credo che la fonte sia la stessa, non c'è un'immagine abbastanza bella del tornado in giro...non s'era detto di evitare i duplicati?:surrender:

OK thats it! I've been following this thread and now ive just got to have a go! (The lightning card pushed me over the edge) I can't work out what movement decks you are using but, just to be devils advocate, how about the standard cards but 1:300 scale aircraft? (very attractive at £1 to £1.50 a pop and smaller play area too)
Any thoughts?

I'm not sure to understand, wanna use a smaller deck to play?

Hi, no not at all, I was under the impression that someone had created larger movement cards to account for the higher speeds involved. I was just thinking out loud, if you like, that it may be easier to downsize the planes. Is there a list of what decks are used for each plane? That seems to be the hardest part to decide.
Cheers

I would be tempted to use existing cards and smaller models, and just assume that the cards represent much longer distances.

Hi Nigel
Yes it was me I started the thread after buying some of the F-toys jets and took a normal A,B,C deck scanned them and then stretched them in paint or photo shop by doing this it allows you to use the standard cards for prop driven aircraft such as the Skyraider for Vietnam?
I increased the cards by a 3rd this looked to work and gave the difference required to make the game playable, we have had a few games and have added in the use of missiles if yo have a look back in the thread you will see the double stick we use for them?

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, I'm really getting to thinking about this now.........Heroics and Ros next I think. Lots of research on which jets had the most maneuverability etc. Thanks for starting this thread its great.

The larger cards you may be thinking about are the new decks for WWII. They are the ones included with the WWII mini's.
