Calling Australian Wings of Glory players!

You are invited to the 2013 Brisbane Muster for two days of table-top aerial combat using the WW1 and WW2 Wings of Glory game systems.

This year the Brisbane Muster runs from 9am to 4pm on Saturday 21/9/13 and Sunday 22/9/13 at the Serbian Hall on the corner of Vulture Street & Stephens Road South Brisbane. This venue is located just minutes from the Brisbane CBD, and only 50 meters from the Southbank Railway Station & Busway. There are numerous motels and backpacker hostels within easy walking distance of the Hall, making it a great location for visitors to Brisbane.

Gamemasters will have many miniatures games available for demonstration and participation play. I will have booked tables for both WGF and WGS games, and the best thing is that entry to the event is FREE!

On the Saturday afternoon I will be running 'mass battle' engagements to attempt to break the current world records for WGF and WGS. Many members of the hosting Brisbane Independent Gamers are old hands from the 'Wings of War' days, so you can be assured of meeting some capable wingmen and opponents. I would like to 'muster' as many members of the forum as we can to be part of this event.

For the interstaters September is a fantastic time of year to visit Brisbane with its warm days and balmy evenings. The event falls on the first weekend of the school holidays and right in the middle of the Brisbane Festival which focuses on nearby Southbank Parklands.

if you think you could make it to the Brisbane Muster this year post on this thread or PM me, and please pass this on to other non-forum members you think may be interested in coming along.

Cheers,

Carl.

Sounds great, I am not sure if I can get there at this stage. I will pass the details onto the
membership at the NWS: "Napoleonic Wargaming Society".

Thanks Steve, that would be great. It's a long way to come from the west.

Carl can you confirm the Wings of glory Comp is still on in September, as there may be a few players from Toowoomba intrested in coming down.

Wings of Glory at the Brisbane Muster is confirmed. Mainly WGS but we may also get some WGF going.

Hi Carl,

This sounds pretty darn good. Would love to escape the Victorian chill that's still present during September. Will crunch some numbers and see if it can be done.

Cheers,

Pip.

Also looking at the numbers, my wife wants to do the quilting exhibition, so it could be two birds with one stone.
Excuse the pun.

Mainly looking for WWI.
Are there any details of what else is on.

Drat! I'll still be in Italy that weekend.

I also wish I could get there, mate. But with the missus' birthday on 19/09, a trip to Brissie would be a bit extravagant. I spent most of 2011 and 2012 working at Meeandah and Enoggera, often having to stay over the weekends.

If I'd known about WGF then.......

Hi Phil,

New players are very welcome. Forum member 'Doug' (real name Alastair) is heading down from Toowoomba, and there may be other members of his playing circle as well.

I am going to be running games with a particular Australian flavour, some AFC action for WGF and RAAF in North Africa, Syria and New Guinea for WGS.

We're also going to try and set a mass battle record if we can get the numbers.

Cheers,

Carl.

Hi Stan,

We'll have WGF and WGS going. I will likely run some WGF games on Saturday morning then move into WGS, but we will have two tables so both can run at once.

If you have never played WGS this will be a good place to learn, and there will be many experienced WGF players on hand to provide some decent opposition.

Cheers,

Carl.

Dal,

Would have been good to have you come up, but we all must live by the code 'happy wife, happy life.'

Maybe next year.

Hi Macka,

My wife is a scrapbooker and is also attending the Brisbane convention centre for some sort of craft expo, might be the same venue.

We will certainly have plenty of WGF going. And of you want to dip your toe in the fast paced world of stressed skinned aluminium 500kph+ cannon armed combat aircraft we'll have WGS participation games running as well.

Cheers,

Carl.

With the Brisbane Muster just under 8 weeks away here's an update. All games will be based on historical engagements with a specifically Australian flavour.

Saturday morning will start off with WGF, with SE5as and Sopwith Camels from 2 and 4 Squadrons AFC and RE8s of 3 Squadron AFC facing off against German scouts in July 1918.

We will then continue with the biplane action but move forward to a new war with Gloster Gladiators of 3 Squadron RAAF fighting Fiat CR.42 Falcos of the Regia Aeronautica over the Egypt in December 1940.

We will follow 3 Squadron RAAF as they convert to the Curtiss Tomahawk and engage Vichy French Dewoitine D.520 fighters and Glenn Martin 167F bombers in the skies over Syria, June 1941.

Still with 3 Squadron RAAF, the unit returns to North Africa where its Tomahawks now battle an escorted Luftwaffe Stuka raid striking shipping in Tobruk harbour, September 1941.

On Sunday the action will move to the Pacific Theatre, 1942. 75 Squadron RAAF Kittyhawks will escort USAAF dive bombers raiding the enemy airstrip at Lae defended by Japanese A6M2 Zero fighters.

A Battle of the Bismark Sea scenario, March 1943 will also be on offer. RAAF Kittyhawks, Beaufighters and Bostons with USAAF B-25s will be attacking Japanese shipping defended by A6M2 Zeros and Ki-43 Oscars.

The last battle of the weekend will see RAAF Spitfires defending Darwin against A6M2 Zeros and Mitsubishi G4M1 bombers in May 1943.

At some point on the weekend I would like to try a 'mass battle' with the maximum number of players to see if we can set at least an Australian WGF or WGS record.

I should have enough aircraft available to field sufficient forces for these scenarios, but if you have your own aircraft feel free to bring them along.

Cheers,

Carl.

Less than three weeks to go before the Brisbane Muster at the Serbian Hall in South Brisbane, anyone else care to sign up for a day or the weekend?

This week I will finish off painting a couple of Vichy French Glenn Martin 167F bombers to flesh out the Syrian scenario. If I get time I might even have a flight of SM79 Sparviero bombers ready to go, but that may be a project too far.

This is looking good Carl. Some great looking scenario's planned there. Well done. Would love to see plenty of pics of the action. I hope you get the mass furball off the ground and you get a plethora of aircraft flying for your record attempt.

With Day One of the Brisbane Muster done, I thought I'd share some photos of the action.

The venue is the Serbian Hall on Vulture Street South Brisbane, just a short walk from the local train or bus stations.

110351

The day dawned sunny and warm, great flying weather! No wonder they say Queensland is beautiful one day and perfect the next.

110352

About 0830hrs I started setting up my table for WGF. The Imperial German battle flag draped one end of the table.....

110353

and the Australian flag the other.

110354

The previous week I made up a few 'victory cups' to be awarded to any players who score a confirmed kill during the games this weekend. They looked great on the table and drew some attention. Not bad for 60c trophies with a home printed sticker attached.

110355

The Entente order of battle for the first WGF July 1918 scenario - two SE5a, two Sopwith Camels and one RE8 to conduct a photo recon mission over a German occupied Belgian railyard.

110356

The Central Powers brought two Fokker D.VII, one Fokker Dreidecker and a Pfalz D.IIIa. All aircraft ready to go, just waiting for some pilots to fly them.

110357

My usual wingman Alex declined to fly with me today, instead trying one of a crop of skirmish games being played at the Muster which appear to be the flavour of the moment.

110358

Instead my 9 year old daughter Amelie stepped up to watch my back. Don't be fooled by her youthful and innocent appearance, this is not her first dogfight!

The day started off slow but the crowd swelled about 1100 hours. Forum member Wayne aka 'Whiskey Sierra' turned up and we got to know each other, which was fantastic. Quite a few patrons came over impressed with the set up, the miniatures and the new maps. Pretty soon briefings were done and new players took their places in the cockpit, I'll post the AAR's tomorrow.

If any Brisbane based players can make it tomorrow I will be set up and ready to go with some WGS by 0900hrs.

Where did you get the 60c trophies? It sounds like an idea so good it's worth stealing...

Just bought 20 - cost $1.10 each with postage. Should do for Cancon.

The local $2 shop Zoe, Choice I think it was. They had silver and gold in packets of 3 for $2.

Back at the Brisbane Muster for Day 2. Here are just a few of the other games they had on offer - skirmish games abounded!

110447

Fantasy miniatures....

110448

Muskets and Tomahawks 28mm skirmish game, very popular with the local Toowoomba club right now.

110449

A very impressive fully crewed longship built by a local gamer (and carpenter) for the SAGA skirmish game.

110454

The Saxons prepare to repel a Viking raid!

110450

Rourke's Drift game - Zulus vs Redcoats.

110451

Love the outpost - looks like the Zulus have set fire to one of the buildings!

110452

What wargaming convention would be complete without at least one table of Napleonics.

110453

Pulp Alley skirmish game - this absorbed my little wingman's attention for most of the Muster.

110455

Alex getting excited about Pulp Alley - he was the demon of great dice rolls the entire weekend!

110456

He also had a go at Zulu Wars, but he found the more sedate pace a little less exciting.

110457

The Wings of Glory WW2 table is set up for a late 1941 Stuka Raid on Tobruk. I will post the details in the WGS AAR section.
