For the third WGS game for Cancon Day 1 it was decided to move the action to the Western Desert, early 1942. The Allies were flying three RAAF Kittyhawks supported by a lone RAF Hurricane. They were opposed by two Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2's. I took one 'Friedrich' and a new player Ben took the other. The RAAF and RAF aircraft were ably flown by four more new players, including a father and son team Chris and Kieran who became 'regulars' at the table over the next two days.

We used the 'Darwin' map - Nile Delta perhaps?

The Messerschmitts began with an alitude advantage, which was used to the maximum as they could climb twice as fast as the P-40s. After a few games with the slower fighters the Bf 109Fs and Kittyhawks were very quick, and their wide circuits in direct contrast to the snappy turns of the Japanese fighters. The game played out over almost the entire length and breadth of a 1400mm x 1000mm map. A portent of the fast fighters set!

After some fast firing passes with the Bf109Fs diving in and climbing away a furball developed.

My Bf109F was hit and caught fire, but my pilot took out a P-40 with a well aimed burst (= explosion card)!

The return fire was also brutal however and thanks to the extra damage taken from the fire the 'Friedrich' also went down with my pilot 'hitting the silk'.

My wingman took down the Hurricane before he climbed away and left the remaining P-40's to head back to their own base. Final tally was a P-40 and Hurricane shot down for one Messerschmitt Bf109F. By the time this battle ended Day 1 of Cancon was almost done and I had to pack up the gear. This was the last purely fighter on fighter contest for WGS at Cancon - for Days 2 and 3 escorted bombing raids by the Japanese Army and Naval Air Services were the order of the day, and what titanic struggles they were! But more on that in the next post.

Great WWII North Africa action, Carl.

The Messerschmitts of JG 27 proofed their abilities. :salute:

I hope all pilots made it out of their planes or crash landed without major injuries.
