Mission 14 Snap Crackle and Pop.

C flight was assembled in the Co office.
“ Got a telegram from Intelligence that a German High ranker is up near our sector taking a look at the lines from a chateau . They want us to escort a DH4 to bomb the target and give him cover if the Hun pop up.”

Lt Hibbet piped up “ Any Archie or AAMG protecting him sir?”

“ No but there is a Blimp by all accounts, that’s why our flight has been chosen, what with Grisham here being our top Balloon buster. You need to get the balloon down for the bomber to get a decent shot at the target”
Grisham coughed nervously
“ Right of you go. Jonty you have the last of our incendiary bullets so make them count, you should be back for Tiffin”
C flight saluted, wheeled about and headed for their Spads.

C flight crossed over NML ahead of the DH4 on the horizon the silhouette of the Blimp loomed large. Hibbet (dedicated ground crew1) (6) lead the attack with Gisham (8) and Mike Bates (4) on either wing.

The Germans were quick to react and the ground crew started to winch motor. Bates was next to fire

His flight leader hones in on a Pfalz and fires a short burst , watching the bullets rip holes up the spine of the fuselage and into the pilot who jerked visibly at the impact (3+pilot)

The Hun return fire and Hibbet felt his rudder go floppy as the bullets ripped though his tail section (2+RRD, 1+RRD) The balloon fire continues to glow (0pts)

The DH4 lines runs up for its first run at the Chateau while the German scouts set about attacking the RFC flight.

Guns free Grisham and Bates turn to meet their attackers and protect the bomber, the balloon continues to descend and obscurers the target causing the bomber to pull out of his run. Hibbet fires as a Pfalz passes through his sights his rounds pounding into the Germans fuel tank, the resulting explosion rocking the Spad as it passed. (XP)

The tail gunner scores a hit on another enemy scout (1+smoke) but his second burst jams his guns (0+GJ)

With the Jasta in disarray and the balloon close to the ground Bates tries to destroy it before it is too late. (1pt) Jonty meanwhile drops behind the smoking Pfalz and takes careful aim (5pt +0) (4+4) The bomber hits the blimp for 4pts but it reaches the ground without being destroyed

With only 2 Hun left and the target blanketed by the balloon Hibbet signals his flight to take them on and clear the skies. Grisham gets a series of shots at his opponent (3, 1+RRD) but takes a a pounding in return (2+RRD, 1pt)

The Pfalz Grisham was tailing Immels and is now head to head He fires first (2+0) but the reply is devastating as Jonty feels a searing pain through his left arm and sees pieces of his cockpit splinter (3+pilot, 1pt),

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=71495&d=1358358549

while Bates takes a burst form the other Pfalz (4pts)
Hibbet looking round heads towards a yellow tailed Pfalz but misses by a mile (0), the DH4 drops a full load but suffers the 50% hp penalty so scores 4 points , The yellow tail and Grisham Immel but Hibbet catches the German and his bullets tear great chunks out of his wings which burst into flame (2+fire. 2+GJ ,ignore).

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=71496&d=1358358556

Trying desperately to escape his hunters the yellow tail opens up his throttle but Jonty drops in behind him and sends him to the ground with a well aimed burst of fire (2+fire) The remaining German scout, surrounded by RFC planes makes a dash for his own lines firing as he goes past Bates (3pts) who fires back (0pts)

http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=71499&d=1358358572

In a parting shot the Pfalz swings round onto the DH4 as it moves in to drop a second load but in his panic misses (0) It was the last mistake the German ever made. Hibbet was right on his tail and as he squeezed the trigger the rounds cut through the flimsy fabric of the right wing severing the main struts and stringers. He watched in horror as the plane folded in two ejecting its stricken pilot as it tumbled end over end towards the ground.

Despite the skies being free of threats the mission was doomed. With the balloon blocking off the bombing run there was no chance of destroying the Chateau with the remaining bomb load.

Hibbet rallied his flight and made the signal “Home”

Result
RFC C Flight
2nd Lt Hibbet. 2 kills
FO Jonty Grisham. Wounded RTB 1kill (now an ace)

4 points of damage scored by DH4
Balloon damaged but not destroyed

German flight
All planes lost Pfalz pilot that exploded drew a Critical card no 2. Did not survive

Amazingly the fire on the balloon did no damage . After a stream of 0 damage cards and gun jams there was no chance of getting the balloon and by the time the DH4 got on a series of bombing runs it was at level 2 so it blocked the flight path. Still I enjoyed the game. Am all set for the follow up:clap:

Well you can't win them all Paul, but you gave the Hun a nasty mauling.
Hope your chaps soon recover from their injuries.
A crate is on its way to the Hospital.
Kyte.

Like Dave said: Cool Spad action!

It's a special challenge to fight with this fast but a little bit unmaneuverable planes.

C-Flight guys did a good job and protect the D.H.4 well.:salute:

Sorry, that the bombing failed. Lucky German General. :hmm:

I'll upgrade the short roster and ask the dice for Hibbets wound status tomorrow.

...by the way. Congratulation Mr. Grisham.

Im afraid it was Jonty that took the bullets Sven, Hibbett is a good flight leader but he is not up to taking other peoples wounds yet :envy:
