Ausführlich wird der Werdegang des jungen Hartmann beschrieben, der 1941 mit der Pilotenausbildung anfing und ein Jahr später an die Ostfront versetzt wurde. Dort erzielte er die meisten Abschüsse. Aber er kämpfte auch gegen alliierte Piloten über den Erdölfeldern Rumäniens.
Unglücklicherweise wurde er nach Gefangennahme durch US-Soldaten an die Soviets übergeben. Der zweite Teil des Buches handelt über die elf Jahre lange Gefangenschaft Hartmanns und die Karriere bei der jungen Bundesluftwaffe nach seiner Entlassung.
Ein informatives Buch, das mit vielen Vorurteilen aufräumt. Bezeichnend ist, dass das Buch von zwei US Amerikanern geschrieben wurde, die mit Hartmann befreundet waren.
