This is the first book in a quartet by Pat Cunningham DFM. who flew for 40 years himself. First in the R.A.F. and then with British Midland Airways. It tells the first part of the adventures of Paul Cowley,an RFC. pilot during the build up to "The Big push" on the Somme in 1916. The story begins after a motor bike accident has sidelined him with a ****y knee and covers his convalescence and learning to fly the new DH2 at Upavon. Apart from the diversion of his amours at this point, the show soon kicks off with his Squadron in France and some very good background on the vagaries of the BE itself.
