Hardback Summary:
First published in 1969, in 'Open Cockpit', AVM Arthur Gould Lee recounts his experiences as a student pilot, scout pilot with 46 Sqn RFC and instructor on Home Establishment in 1918. His first-hand experience of aerial fighting is very well written and although chronological in timeline, concentrates each chapter on a particular aspect of his experiences in France in 1917-18, ranging from Deep Offensive Patrols to Ground-Strafing. The narrative is fast-paced, accurate in detail and down to earth in delivery. This 218pp book covers some of the ground from his previous 'No Parachute', but also introduces much new material and is adjudged the better of the two books. In the final chapters, Lee clearly expresses his negative opinions of Trenchard, instructional technique and the policy of no parachutes. Overall, an engaging and enjoyable read, with some humourous anecdotes to light what was for the author at times a very dark experience.
