Here are my two Albatros DIs. I went for the natural wood look. These are Shapeways models. Decals are the ones at the Aerodrome Store specifically for the Albatros DI. One came without a prop so I put on one from the Aerodrome Store.

Very nice, Peter! I particularly like the staining/wood finish you have on the fuselages of these two. I have to get a couple of these myself - I have a couple of DIIs I'm planning on repainting, but I'd like some DIs, too...:p

All the best,
Matt

Beautiful planes Peter! How did you achieve the wood effect?

Base coat is a a yellow tan, then I painted the seams. The grain look is from a heavy wash that I kept streaking the brush over. All the paints were Vallejo as well as the wash.
Not sure I wrote down the colors but if I did I'll pass them on.

Those Albatros show a great attention to detail, Peter. Very nice. I'm glad I came back to take a better look. Thanks for sharing!

Btw, did you build those flight stands, or were they purchased as is?

Thanks Chris. The bases are Litko. The extending magnet tool I got at Sears. Gimbal set from Aerodrome Store.
The magnet tool has a pocket clip. Luckily it is screwed in at the end. I removed the clip and bought different screws, the ones that have a funnel shaped head. I had to drill a bevel into the base to fit the screws. If we ever put on a game with altitude these will work great.

Seems like you've made full use of the Aviation Wings decal sheet ;)

You spotted that? ;)
Not quite full use just yet - still 2 more Jasta 2 kites to come (the all-green Dieter Collin and Prinz Friedrich Karl, plus Jasta 5's Spitzhoff). These will come soon, along with various Jasta 2 Albatros D.IIs.

Many thanks for the REP!

Smashing stuff, Tim - such pretty color schemes - simple but 'colorful'...:sAprvd: I like the 'early war' stuff quite a lot...

Keep up the inspiring work.

All the best,
Matt

Thanks for the REP Matt!

I really like the early stuff, too. I have actually bypassed a load of 1915 kites in order to do these, and then to progress into 1917.
I need to radically speed up production if I am to get a chance to do more early planes.

Outstanding Tim, truly outstanding. Hard to follow, but here's my humble contribution. Two Shapeways models by Reduced Aircraft Factory. Paints a mixture of Valejo and Misterkit. The decals are partly from Miscmini (the crosses) and my own efforts. The latter are poor by comparison with others, partly because of lack of skill on my part and partly because I only have a relatively cheap inkjet printer. But I like to try :) They represent Ltns Otto Höhne and Jürgen Sandel of Jasta 2 and have been painted up in readiness for the forthcoming OTT campaign, "Bold Young Men" covering October to December 1916.

Hi Mike

Nice D.Is!

Glad you like my beasties!

Thanks for the Rep!
There are more to come, hopefully by the weekend...;)

I recently acquired more of the "Aviation Wings" decal sheets from that chap Peter mentioned in Canada, via a 'Dromer in the USA, who bought them and sent them on to me; made the postage very cheap, just 'small letter'.

I do have numerous "fragments" of several such sheets left over, which you can plunder for free if they would suit your needs.
Alternatively, I can pass you on to my 'facilitator' who will be happy to help you out.

Be aware, however, that there are numerous research failings behind the decal sheets, which lead to errors on the sheets themselves. Shortly I will finish and publish (post in the Files section) my Jasta 2 research project, which lays bare these mistakes.

Shortly I will finish and publish (post in the Files section) my Jasta 2 research project, which lays bare these mistakes. I shall look forward to that Tim. Meantime, thanks for the offer of some decals. However, I contacted Brian via ebay and he is willing to post to UK. So I ordered a sheet of Albatros DI (Part 1) and a sheet of Albatros DII (part 1). Hopefully we can have a good chat about them at Fight Club, if there's time, before I use any of them, 'cos I suspect it'll take that long for the post to reach me from Canada. :)

PS Thanks Peter, the link was a great help :)

Somebody has been a very busy boy :) Congrats Tim - they are very beautiful. Rep gun already fired for these on the other thread but it would be nice to fire it again - most worthy :) :salute::pint::pint::pint::pint::pint:

...and possibly more than the Germans built. Wings of Linen has that number as 50.

Thanks everyone!

Number built was actually 58 (+5)

5 airframes for static load testing and flight evaluation (believed to be D.344 - D.348)

8 prototypes (D.380 - D.385, followed by D.390 and D.391), all used in combat

50 production machines (D.422 - D.471)

All explained in a little more detail in my Jasta 2 Research Project, which is now receiving photographs and is almost ready for uploading to the 'Drome.
